Problematic Social Media Use: Which symptoms are necessary conditions for reduced control and negative outcomes to occur over time?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: By adopting the cognitive-behavioral model of Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU), this study used Necessary Condition Analysis to identify which PSMU symptoms constitute necessary conditions (NCs: factors whose absence guarantees the absence of the outcome) for the emergence of the other symptoms. We focused on NCs for deficient self-regulation and negative outcomes because empirical findings converge in identifying them as central symptoms (i.e., unambiguously indicative of PSMU). METHODS: 229 adolescents (37.60% Female; Mage = 15.44 ± 0.66) completed a survey twice, wi

Health damages of nitrate exposure in drinking water: Inclusion of non-fatal conditions increases the social costs of nitrogen.

Nitrogen pollution of surface and groundwater remains largely unregulated resulting in negative impacts to human health and the environment. Policy interventions designed to internalize the negative externality of nutrient pollution have relied on low and highly uncertain damage estimates. Here we address an important gap in monetizing the health costs attributable to drinking water nitrate contamination in public water supplies. We consider fifteen adverse health conditions linked to elevated levels of drinking water nitrate including cancers, birth anomalies, and other non-fatal conditions.

The Chronic Conditions-Depressive Symptoms Association: How Self-Rated Health Mediates and Social Frailty Moderates in Malaysian Ageing Communities.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between chronic conditions and depressive symptoms in ageing populations is complex and influenced by various factors. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of self-rated health and the moderating role of social frailty in the relationship between chronic conditions and depressive symptoms among community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults in Malaysia. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed baseline data from the AGELESS study, comprising 1675 community-dwelling adults aged 56-97 years (mean age 72.4 years) in Malaysia. Depressive symptoms were m

Psychiatric rehabilitation in routine Indian mental health practice: A review of social protections for persons with mental health conditions.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 200 million Indians have mental health conditions - a sizeable proportion of them requiring psychiatric rehabilitation services. The numbers of mental health professionals are abysmally low. Early psycho-social rehabilitation interventions can improve functional outcomes, reducing disability. Psycho-social interventions have been made possible with the shift away from medical and charity models of disability to the establishment of social protections for vulnerable groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors have undertaken a narrative review of all the social protecti

From curing to caring: exploring social care needs after the onset of chronic conditions among European older adults (50+).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Population aging affects health and social care needs. Although its effects on healthcare needs have been widely discussed, less has been said about its implications on social care needs, even though the consequences of living with chronic conditions are related to functional decline, disability, dependency, and mobility limitation. This study aims to identify trajectories of healthcare and social care needs after the onset of chronic conditions, as well as to explore through cross-country comparisons how demographic, socioeconomic, living arrangements, and health-re

Experiences of loneliness and social isolation among young people with chronic physical conditions: A thematic synthesis of qualitative studies.

INTRODUCTION: Young people with chronic health conditions are among the most at risk of having poor social connections, however, little is known about their experiences of loneliness and social isolation. We aimed to describe the perspectives and experiences of loneliness and social isolation among young people with chronic physical conditions. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and CENTRAL from inception to May 2023 for qualitative studies that described the perspectives of loneliness and social isolation in young people aged 10-24 years with chronic physical conditions.

Cumulative social disadvantage and hospitalisations due to ambulatory care-sensitive conditions in Finland in 2011─2013: a register study.

OBJECTIVES: To study the interplay between several indicators of social disadvantage and hospitalisations due to ambulatory care-sensitive conditions (ACSC) in 2011─2013. To evaluate whether the accumulation of preceding social disadvantage in one point of time or prolongation of social disadvantage had an effect on hospitalisations due to ACSCs. Four common indicators of disadvantage are examined: living alone, low level of education, poverty and unemployment. DESIGN: A population-based register study. SETTING: Nationwide individual-level register data on hospitalisations due to ACSCs for t

Housing conditions influence cortical and behavioural reactions of sheep in response to videos showing social interactions of different valence.

Mood, as a long-term affective state, is thought to modulate short-term emotional reactions in animals, but the details of this interplay have hardly been investigated experimentally. Apart from a basic interest in this affective system, mood is likely to have an important impact on animal welfare, as bad mood may taint all emotional experience. In the present study about mood - emotion interaction, 29 sheep were kept under predictable, stimulus-rich or unpredictable, stimulus-poor housing conditions, to induce different mood states. In an experiment, the animals were confronted with video seq

The contribution of housing and neighbourhood conditions to educational inequalities in non-communicable diseases in Europe: findings from the European Social Survey (2014) special module on the social determinants of health.

BACKGROUND: Social gradients have been found across European populations, where less affluent groups are more often affected by poor housing and neighbourhood conditions. While poor housing and neighbourhood quality have been associated with a range of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), these conditions have rarely been applied to the examination of socioeconomic differences in NCDs. This study therefore asks ‘to what extent does adjusting for poor housing and neighbourhood conditions reduce inequalities in NCDs among men and women in Europe’? METHODS: Our analysis used pooled-data from 20 Eur

Adverse early-life conditions and their impact on the marriage market and social mobility: The Poznań birth cohort, 1830-1855.

OBJECTIVES: Early-life conditions may influence later-life outcomes through biological scarring and selective survival mechanisms. However, the long-term effects of childhood adversity on marriage formation and social mobility remain insufficiently explored in historical populations. This study examines whether exposure to adverse early-life conditions affected the probability of entering a first marriage and social mobility at first marriage in 19th-century Poznań. METHODS: The study draws on linked individual-level data from the Poznań Historical Population Database, including birth, marria

Identifying critical psychotherapy targets in serious cardiac conditions: The importance of addressing coping with symptoms, healthcare navigation, and social support.

OBJECTIVE: In seriously ill cardiac patients, several psychotherapy efficacy studies demonstrate little to no reduction in depression or improvement in quality of life, and little is known about how to improve psychotherapies to best address the range of patient needs. An interpersonal and behavioral activation psychotherapy was a key component of the Collaborative Care to Alleviate Symptoms and Adjust to Illness (CASA) multisite randomized clinical trial. Although depressive symptoms did improve in the CASA trial, questions remain about how best to tailor psychotherapies to the needs of serio

Social integration, socioeconomic conditions and type of ill health preceding disability pension in young women: a Swedish population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Disability pension has increased in recent decades and is seen as a public health and socioeconomic problem in Western Europe. In the Nordic countries, the increase has been particularly steep among young women. PURPOSE: The aim was to analyze the influence of low social integration, socioeconomic risk conditions and different measures of self-reported ill health on the risk of receiving disability pension in young women. METHOD: The study comprised all Swedish women born in 1960 to 1979, who had been interviewed in any of the annual Swedish Surveys of Living Conditions (1990-200

A Bayesian spatial ecological analysis of social conditions, infection burden and COVID-19 mortality across mainland Scottish councils 2020-2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated substantial spatial and social inequalities in mortality, yet within-country council-level variations remain incompletely understood. Scotland offers a useful case, with a severe epidemic but rich administrative data and marked socio-economic gradients. We examined how infection burden, hospital-related indicators and selected area-level social indicators were associated with COVID-19 mortality across mainland Scotland 2020-2021. We assembled a two-year panel for 29 mainland councils, using deaths involving COVID-19, population denominators, COVID-19 testing

Social Conditions Shaping Youth Engagement with Drug Treatment: Perspectives of Young People and Healthcare Providers in Egypt, a MENA Context.

BACKGROUND: Young people's engagement with drug treatment in Egypt occurs within social conditions shaped by stigma, family expectations, religion, economic precarity, and a punitive policy environment. Evidence from Middle East and North Africa (MENA) settings remains limited. This study explored how these conditions shape treatment engagement from the perspectives of young people and healthcare providers. METHODS: We conducted an interpretivist qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with 20 young people aged 18-30 years who were currently engaged with or had recently complet…
