Quantifying the impact of social groups and vaccination on inequalities in infectious diseases using a mathematical model.

BACKGROUND: Social and cultural disparities in infectious disease burden are caused by systematic differences between communities. Some diff … o key factors contributing to the rates of transmission-contact rate and susceptibility-between two social groups can lead to twice the risk of infection in the high-risk population group relative to the low-risk population group. The more isolated the high-risk group, the greater this disease inequality. Vaccination amplified this inequality further: equal va …

Social skills groups for people aged 6 to 21 with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

BACKGROUND: Since autism was first described, major difficulties in social interaction have been a defining feature of individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Social skills groups are a common intervention for individuals with ASD. Although a frequently recommended practice, the few studies that have addressed the efficacy of social skills groups have shown mixed results. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of social skills groups for improving social competence, social communication, and quality of life for people with ASD who are six to 21 years of age. SEARCH METHODS: We

Predictors of outcome in a cognitive-behavioral group program for children and adolescents with social anxiety disorder.

The present study examined predictors of treatment outcome among children and adolescents with social anxiety disorder (SAD). Seventy-five participants (8-13 years) participated in a 12-session cognitive behavioral group treatment (CBT). Potential predictors were the pre-treatment severity of anxious symptoms assessed from both the child's and parent's perspective as well as depressive symptoms (child report only) and general emotional distress in parent (parent self-report). Furthermore, the relationship between treatment outcome and child's self-reported pre-post changes in self-consciousnes

Defense style changes with the addition of psychodynamic group therapy to clonazepam in social anxiety disorder.

Psychodynamic Group Therapy (PGT) and clonazepam are strategies to reduce symptoms of generalized social anxiety disorder (GSAD). The addition of PGT might lead to changes in defense styles. The objective of this study is to examine changes in defense styles when comparing clonazepam to psychodynamic group therapy plus clonazepam in GSAD during 12 weeks. Fifty-seven patients that met DSM-IV criteria for GSAD participated. social anxiety disorder symptoms were evaluated with the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, and defense styles with the Defense Style Questionnaire. All defense styles changed o

Effectiveness of cognitive behavioural group therapy for social phobia in a community clinic: a benchmarking study.

This study used a benchmarking strategy to investigate the transportability of cognitive behavioural group therapy (CBGT) for social phobia to a community mental health clinic. The influence of common exclusion criteria on effect sizes was also examined. Patients (N=153) attended seven 4-h sessions of CBGT, which resulted in significant reductions in symptoms of social anxiety and depression. Effect sizes compared favourably to previous efficacy and effectiveness studies of both group and individual treatment. More than half of the treatment completers achieved reliable change. One-third achie

Drug use and social circumstances: a study among different target groups in northwest Bangladesh.

The use of illicit drugs has become an increasingly serious problem among various sections of the Bangladesh population. However, there has been almost no research on the use of illicit drugs by Bangladeshi people. This paper examines drug use patterns and the social circumstances within which drug-taking behaviour took place among a sample of different target groups. The study incorporated a semi-structured qualitative interview and a structured quantitative questionnaire. Demographic and drug use information was collected from a total of 154 drug users. Approximately three-quarters of the su

Self-reported sensory processing and social participation across adult ADHD symptom groups.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory processing differences are increasingly recognized in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but their relationship with social participation remains understudied. This study examined sensory processing and social participation across three adult ADHD symptom groups and evaluated the association between sensory processing and social participation. METHODS: This cross-sectional online survey included 209 adults aged 21-65 years, categorized into self-reported ADHD diagnosis (n = 91), elevated ADHD symptoms without a reported diagnosis (n = 66), and l

Evolution of networks in virtual reality: A scalable framework for studying social dynamics of small groups.

Immersive technologies provide new possibilities to study social dynamics. In this paper, we develop a methodological framework for identifying and describing the evolution of group networks in virtual reality (VR). Leveraging longitudinal data on participants' interpersonal distances obtained in a collaborative virtual environment during a university course about VR we demonstrate how network methods can be applied and used to test propositions of social capital theory. Specifically, we use stochastic actor-oriented models (SAOMs) to explore the formation and change of social ties over time.

Risk Factors for Social Exclusion and Stigma in a Group of Non-Hospitalised Patients with COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Stigma in many contexts is defined as a process of differentiation, othering, and discrimination. Its external manifestations include outward negative attitudes, and bad behaviour targeted at those with a specific condition. SARS-CoV-2 infections have been seen as a dangerous clinical condition towards people. The aim of the study was to describe the risk factors for suffering social exclusion and stigma in a group of people with COVID-19. METHODS: We included 95 people into a descriptive, cross-sectional, and correlational study. They were invited to participate voluntarily to an

The Role of Social Position Within Peer Groups in Distress-Motivated Smoking Among Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between smoking and adolescents' peer relationships is complex, with studies showing increased risk of smoking for adolescents of both very high and very low social position. A key question is whether the impact of social position on smoking depends on an adolescent's level of coping motives (i.e., their desire to use smoking to mitigate negative affect). METHOD: We assessed how social position predicts nicotine dependence in a longitudinal sample (N = 3,717; 44.8% male; mean age = 13.41 years) of adolescent lifetime smokers measured between 6th and 12th grades. Links between discrimination and cardiovascular health among socially stigmatized groups: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: There is a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease across diverse groups in the U.S. population, and increasing research has identified stigma as a potential barrier to cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment. This systematic review examines evidence linking discrimination and cardiovascular health among socially stigmatized groups. STUDY DESIGN: Six databases were systematically reviewed from inception through February 2018 for studies with adult subjects, focusing on cardiovascular health indicators among social groups stigmatized because of their gender, race/ethnicit…

Early social isolation impairs development, mate choice and grouping behaviour of predatory mites.

The social environment early in life is a key determinant of developmental, physiological and behavioural trajectories across vertebrate and invertebrate animals. One crucial variable is the presence/absence of conspecifics. For animals usually reared in groups, social isolation after birth or hatching can be a highly stressful circumstance, with potentially long-lasting consequences. Here, we assessed the effects of social deprivation (isolation) early in life, that is, absence of conspecifics, versus social enrichment, that is, presence of conspecifics, on developmental time, body size at ma

The quality of diagnosis and management of migraine and tension-type headache in three social groups in Russia.

Background Three successive editions of the International Classification of Headache Disorders and multiple guideline papers on headache care have described evidence based diagnosis and treatment of headache disorders. It remains unknown, however, to which extent this has improved the diagnosis and management of headache. That was the aim of our study in which we also analysed differences between three social groups in Russia. Methods We studied 1042 students (719 females, 323 males, mean age 20.6, age range 17-40), 1075 workers (146 females, 929 males, mean age 40.4, age range 21-67) and 1007…

Distinct neural processes are engaged in the modulation of mimicry by social group-membership and emotional expressions.

People often spontaneously engage in copying each other's postures and mannerisms, a phenomenon referred to as behavioral mimicry. Social psychology experiments indicate that mimicry denotes an implicit affiliative signal flexibly regulated in response to social requirements. Yet, the mediating processes and neural underpinnings of such regulation are largely unexplored. The present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study examined mimicry regulation by combining an automatic imitation task with facial stimuli, varied on two social-affective dimensions: emotional expression (angry vs

Exposure with and without cognitive therapy for generalized social phobia: effects of individual and group treatment.

Patients with generalized social phobia (n = 73) were randomly allocated to two treatment modalities: (1) group or (2) individual treatment, and to three treatment packages: (1) two blocks of exposure in vivo (2) a block cognitive therapy followed by a block exposure in vivo, or (3) two blocks cognitive-behavioural treatment in which both strategies were integrated from the start. All treatments consisted of 16 sessions, given in two treatment blocks of 4 weeks each, separated by a no-treatment phase of 4 weeks. Self-report assessments were held before and after the treatment blocks and at 3-m

Mortality and social class in New Zealand II: male mortality by major disease groupings.

Social class differences in male mortality in New Zealand were investigated for each major disease grouping. The patterns found were similar to those for England and Wales with the lower social classes having mortality rates significantly higher than those of the upper social classes for each major cause of death. The strongest social class mortality gradients were found for deaths from accidents, poisonings and violence; diseases of the respiratory system; endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases; diseases of the genito-urinary system; and diseases of the digestive system. The gradients

Group schema therapy versus group cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder with comorbid avoidant personality disorder: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) with comorbid avoidant personality disorder (APD) has a high prevalence and is associated with serious psychosocial problems and high societal costs. When patients suffer from both SAD and APD, the Dutch multidisciplinary guidelines for personality disorders advise offering prolonged cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Recently there is increasing evidence for the effectiveness of schema therapy (ST) for personality disorders such as borderline personality disorder and cluster C personality disorders. Since ST addresses underlying personality character
