The social implications of classroom seats: replicating and extending previous findings on seating arrangements and peer status.

This preregistered replication study examined how physical proximity in the classroom is associated with peer perceptions of social status, specifically likeability and popularity. We aimed to replicate and extend the study by van den Berg and Cillessen (2015) using data from 719 students across 33 elementary classrooms (grades 4-6; Mage = 10.27; 51.6% boys). We applied the Social Relations Model and mixed-effects modeling to examine (1) whether proximity between classmates is concurrently associated with likeability and popularity, (2) whether longitudinal changes in proximity lead to changes…

Social, lifestyle, and health status characteristics as a proxy for occupational burnout identification: A network approach analysis.

BACKGROUND: Occupational burnout is a type of psychological syndrome. It can lead to serious mental and physical disorders if not treated in time. However, individuals tend to conceal their genuine feelings of occupational burnout because such disclosures may elicit bias from superiors. This study aims to explore a novel method for estimating occupational burnout by elucidating its links with social, lifestyle, and health status factors. METHODS: In this study 5,794 participants were included. Associations between occupational burnout and a set of features from a survey was analyzed using Chi

Association of Functional Status, Cognition, Social Support, and Geriatric Syndrome With Admission From the Emergency Department.

IMPORTANCE: The role of patient-level factors that are unrelated to the specific clinical condition leading to an emergency department (ED) visit, such as functional status, cognitive status, social supports, and geriatric syndromes, in admission decisions is not well understood, partly because these data are not available in administrative databases. OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which patient-level factors are associated with rates of hospital admission from the ED. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study analyzed survey data collected from participants (or their proxi

Do Living Arrangements and Social Network Influence the Mental Health Status of Older Adults in Malaysia?

Living arrangement has been reported to have a significant influence on several mental health statuses of older adults, but their social network may confound this association. This study is aimed at examining the interactive effect of living arrangements and social network on the mental health status among older adults in Malaysia. A total of 2,188 Malaysian older adults living nationwide were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants were classified into four groups according to their living arrangements (living alone or not living alone) and social network size (assessed using Lub

Mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) implicated in plasticity of the reproductive axis during social status transitions.

The highly conserved brain-pituitary-gonadal (BPG) axis controls reproduction in all vertebrates, so analyzing the regulation of this signaling cascade is important for understanding reproductive competence. The protein kinase mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) functions as a conserved regulator of cellular growth and metabolism in all eukaryotes, and also regulates the reproductive axis in mammals. However, whether mTOR might also regulate the BPG axis in non-mammalian vertebrates remains unexplored. We used complementary experimental approaches in an African cichlid fish, Astatotilapia b

Who Represents Our Group? The Effects of Prototype Content on Perceived Status Dispersion and Social Undermining.

Group identity may be embodied in more typical or extreme member attributes. The present research suggests that individuals' perceptions of the group identity prototype predict their beliefs about the status hierarchy and, in turn, the prevalence of social undermining behavior. Across four studies using both experimental and field data, we find that perceiving that the group prototype is focused on the ideal rather than the central tendency is associated with greater levels of perceived status dispersion and social undermining, and that perceived status dispersion mediates the relationship bet

Marital status and gender differences in managing a chronic illness: the function of health-related social control.

The attempts of social network members to regulate individuals' health behaviors, or health-related social control, is one mechanism by which social relationships influence health. Little is known, however, about whether this process varies in married versus unmarried individuals managing a chronic illness in which health behaviors are a key component. Researchers have proposed that social control attempts may have dual effects on recipients' well-being, such that improved health behaviors may occur at the cost of increased emotional distress. The current study accordingly sought to examine ma

Variable effects of social support by race, economic status, and disease activity in systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Health status and disease activity in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other chronic diseases are strongly associated with social support, which suggests that enhanced social support in medical care might improve SLE outcome. There has been little or no study on identifying patients for whom social support would be most beneficial. It would allow practitioners to enable social support more effectively as a complement to disease management. METHODS: A retrospective cohort (200 patients with SLE from 5 centers), balanced by race and insurance status, was studied i

Health status, adherence with health recommendations, self-efficacy and social support in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

A study was performed in 86 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to assess their health problems, the problems they experience in adhering to health recommendations and the relationships of these problems with self-efficacy and social support. Feeling dependent, disability and pain were the most important health related problems. The results showed self-efficacy to be related to the subjective experience of health status as measured by DUTCH-AIMS. Social emotional support was not related to health status, and contrary to what we expected social instrumental support was positively related to

Intersecting social inequalities in prenatal and postnatal care: Examining race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic location.

Existing research document disparities in prenatal and postnatal care utilization. This research introduces a novel approach for examining maternal healthcare disparities by integrating multiple structural factors that inhibit care usage. Principally, we examine intersecting social inequalities to understand how race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and geographic location interactively shape obstetric care usage for individuals who give birth. Drawing data from the 2016-2021 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) (N = 177,480), the Gadson conceptual model, and intersectional appr

Current status and associated factors of social avoidance in postoperative breast cancer patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Compared with the general population, breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy after surgery are more likely to suffer from multiple psychological problems. Social avoidance, as a negative psychological factor, aggravates anxiety and depression, which in turn reduces patients' socialization ability and seriously affects their spirituality, mental health, physical health, and ability to cope with the disease. However, research on social avoidance and distress in breast cancer patients remains limited. In light of the growing public concern about these issues, this study aimed
