Soil-related bacterial and fungal infections.

A variety of classic and emerging soil-related bacterial and fungal pathogens cause serious human disease that frequently presents in primary care settings. Typically, the growth of these microorganisms is favored by particular soil characteristics and may involve complex life cycles including amoebae or animal hosts. Specific evolved virulence factors or the ability to grow in diverse, sometimes harsh, microenvironments may promote pathogenesis. Infection may occur by direct inoculation or ingestion, ingestion of contaminated food, or inhalation. This narrative review describes the usual pres…

Soil to genomics: the Streptomyces chromosome.

The 8-9-Mb Streptomyces chromosome is linear, with a "core" containing essential genes and "arms" carrying conditionally adaptive genes that can sustain large deletions in the laboratory. Bidirectional chromosome replication from a central oriC is completed by "end-patching," primed from terminal proteins covalently bound to the free 5'-ends. Plasmid-mediated conjugation involves movement of double-stranded DNA by proteins resembling other bacterial motor proteins, probably via hyphal tip fusion, mediated by these transfer proteins. Circular plasmids probably transfer chromosomes by transient

Percutaneous absorption of pentachlorophenol from soil.

Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is one of the most heavily used pesticides. About 80% of PCP is used for wood preservation, whereas the remainder is used as an herbicide, fungicide, and disinfectant. PCP is a probable human carcinogen, based on animal studies. Illness and death have been reported where PCP is in direct contact with skin. PCP is the most ubiquitous compound found when the general population is screened for pesticide residue. PCP is found in soil as well as other environmental sources. Our objective was to determine the skin bioavailability of PCP from soil and from the control vehicle …

Soil fumigation: principles and application technology.

The principal soil fumigants and their order of discovery are carbon disulfide, chloropicrin, methyl bromide, 1,3-dichloropropene, ethylene dibromide, 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane, and methyl isothiocyanate. Biological activity of soil fumigants ranges from limited to broad spectrum. Fumigants diffuse through the continuous soil air space as gases. Physical and chemical characteristics determine diffusion rates, distribution between the soil air and moisture, and sorption onto and into the soil particles. The principal soil factors affecting the efficacy of each treatment are the size and conti…

Improving the phytoremediation efficiency of soil phenanthrene contamination by addition of exogenous laccase with soil temperature regulation.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pose a significant threat to ecosystem security and human health. Laccase, a copper-containing oxidase, can oxidize aromatic compounds, potentially enhancing soil organic contaminants degradation and reducing secondary pollution risks in phytoremediation. However, the combined effects of laccase addition and soil temperature on phytoremediation efficiency remain underexplored. This study investigated laccase-assisted phytoremediation of phenanthrene (PHE)-contaminated soil and examined the role of temperature by setting four maize cultivation temperature…

Cadmium immobilization by mercapto-palygorskite in alkaline soil: Impacts on soil microbial communities and wheat rhizosphere metabolism.

Weakly alkaline cadmium (Cd) contaminated soil in China has aroused great concern regarding its impact on food security and human health. Mercapto-modified palygorskite (MP) has exhibited good potential to minimize Cd accumulation in wheat, it is imperative to understand the underlying mechanisms within the soil-wheat-microbial system for sustainable development of agrochemicals. This study evaluated the effects of various MP dosages on soil Cd bioavailability, rhizosphere metabolomics, microbial community structure and wheat growth. The results indicated that MP (0.05-0.2 %) application signi…

Effects of soil solarization combined with manure-amended on soil ARGs and microbial communities during summer fallow.

Soil solarization (SS) is a technique for managing pathogens and weeds, which involves covering with transparent plastic to increase soil temperature during summer fallow (SF). However, SS also alters the diversity of bacterial communities. Therefore, during SF, various organic modifiers are used in combination with SS to improve its efficacy. Organic amendments may contain antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Greenhouse vegetable production (GVP) soils are vital to ensure food security and ecological balance. However, comprehensive study on the effects of SS combined with different types of ma…

Effects of Soil Amendments on Microbial Activities in a Typical Cd-Contaminated Purple Field Soil, Southwestern China.

In this study, three soil amendments (inorganic, liming, or organic-inorganic materials) were used in a Cd-contaminated purple field soil to investigate their impacts on soil Cd availability, enzyme (urease, catalase, sucrase, and acid phosphatase) activities, microbial biomass (carbon/nitrogen) and type (bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes) in mustard and corn trials. Results showed that soil amendments generally decreased soil exchangeable Cd, fungi and bacterial populations while increasing the activities of all the four soil enzymes tested, microbial biomass carbon and populations of actino…

Knowledge, attitude and practice with respect to soil contamination by Soil-Transmitted Helminths in Ibadan, Southwestern Nigeria.

Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Ascaris lumbricoides and Trichuris trichiura, the four major Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and also Strongyloides stercoralis infect humans worldwide. Most studies on Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) carried out in Ibadan were faecal examination based while relatively few soil examination based studies were carried out mostly around school premises using limited number of sampling locations. This study was therefore designed to assess the level of soil contamination with STH and associated risk factors in the eleven local government areas of Ibad…

Biological permeable reactive barriers coupled with electrokinetic soil flushing for the treatment of diesel-polluted clay soil.

Removal of diesel from spiked kaolin has been studied in the laboratory using coupled electrokinetic soil flushing (EKSF) and bioremediation through an innovative biological permeable reactive barriers (Bio-PRBs) positioned between electrode wells. The results show that this technology is efficient in the removal of pollutants and allows the soil to maintain the appropriate conditions for microorganism growth in terms of pH, temperature, and nutrients. At the same time, EKSF was demonstrated to be a very interesting technology for transporting pollutants, microorganisms and nutrients, although…

Measurement of N2, N2O, NO, and CO2 emissions from soil with the gas-flow-soil-core technique.

Here we describe a newly designed system with three stand-alone working incubation vessels for simultaneous measurements of N(2), N(2)O, NO, and CO(2) emissions from soil. Due to the use of a new micro thermal conductivity detector and the redesign of vessels and gas sampling a so-far unmatched sensitivity (0.23 μg N(2)-N h(-1) kg(-1) ds or 8.1 μg N(2)-N m(-2) h(-1)) for detecting N(2) gas emissions and repeatability of experiments could be achieved. We further tested different incubation methods to improve the quantification of N(2) emission via denitrification following the initialization of…

Water-soluble organo-building blocks of aminoclay as a soil-flushing agent for heavy metal contaminated soil.

We demonstrated that water-soluble aminopropyl magnesium functionalized phyllosilicate could be used as a soil-flushing agent for heavy metal contaminated soils. Soil flushing has been an attractive means to remediate heavy metal contamination because it is less disruptive to the soil environment after the treatment was performed. However, development of efficient and non-toxic soil-flushing agents is still required. We have synthesized aminoclays with three different central metal ions such as magnesium, aluminum, and ferric ions and investigated applicability of aminoclays as soil flushing a…

Migration of Vapor Molecules in Soils.

Molecular transport of low-volatility organic vapors through unsaturated porous media is governed by the coupled effects of diffusion, sorption, and pore structure, yet the relative roles of these processes remain insufficiently quantified. In this work, we develop a physics-based model describing vapor migration from a subsurface source to the soil surface by explicitly accounting for moisture-dependent sorption, air-filled porosity, and pore clogging by fine particles. The model predicts that soil moisture affects vapor transport through two competing mechanisms: thin water films progressive…

Photocatalytic fixation of NOx in soils.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) are important atmospheric pollutants that are directly harmful to human health. Recently in urban and industrial areas, synthetic materials have been developed and deployed to photocatalytically oxidize NOx to nitrate (NO3-) in order to improve air quality. We show that the natural presence of small amounts (≤5%) of titanium oxides, such as anatase and rutile, can also drive NOx oxidation to nitrate in soils under UV-visible irradiation. The NO uptake coefficients ranged between 0.1 × 10-6 for sandy soils to 6.4 × 10-5 in the case of tropical clay soils; the la…

Enantioselective degradation of warfarin in soils.

Environmental enantioselectivity information is important to fate assessment of chiral contaminants. Warfarin, a rodenticide and prescription medicine, is a chiral chemical but used in racemic form. Little is known about its enantioselective behavior in the environment. In this study, enantioselective degradation of warfarin in a turfgrass and a groundcover soils was examined in aerobic and ambient temperature conditions. An enantioselective analytical method was established using a novel triproline chiral stationary phase in high performance liquid chromatography. Unusual peak profile pattern…
