The solubilities of denatured proteins in different organic solvents.

The solubilities of heat-denatured and reduced, S-carboxymethylated proteins have been investigated in various organic solvents. Polar, protic solvents (formic acid, trifluoroacetic acid, 3-mercaptopropionic acid) were found to be good solvents for the denatured proteins (20-40 mg ml-1), and the solubilities of the reduced, S-carboxymethylated proteins were generally higher than those of the heat-denatured forms. Most other organic solvents were less effective in solubilizing the denatured proteins. Apolar solvents did not solubilise denatured proteins, but low solubilizing powers were observe…

Occupational exposure to organic solvents and sleep-disordered breathing.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether people with occupational exposure to organic solvents have a higher prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) than the general population and to examine the relationship between snoring and exposure to organic solvents. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: Consecutive patients, aged 30-64 years, referred during a 3-year period to the sleep laboratory at Avesta Hospital, Sweden, because of suspected OSAS made up the patient groups. Following admission, patients underwent a simplified sleep apnea investigation and were divided into two groups, OSAS (n = 3…

Burns due to flammable solvents ignited with floor buffers.

Three patients, employed by janitorial service agencies, were burned severely while buffing floors. A solvent to remove floor lacquer was used in one case, and a solvent to remove glue that held carpet to the floor was used in the other two cases. The solvent used in each case is flammable and was ignited when a floor buffer was used near it. The floor buffers are specifically labeled as unsafe to operate near flammable liquids. The patients' injuries were severe. All three patients survived. This represents a rather unusual and unsafe industrial practice that should be avoided.

Neuropsychological symptoms among tanker drivers with exposure to solvents.

The purpose of this study was to measure the exposure of road tanker drivers to organic solvents at work, and to study, using questionnaires, how many symptoms drivers have which might be caused by exposure to solvents. The target group for the study was all the road tanker drivers of a Finnish oil firm (n = 61 men). There were two control groups from the same firm. One control group included workers who were occasionally exposed to solvents at work (n = 56 men). The other group included workers who had no exposure to solvents (n = 31 men). Industrial hygiene measurements were made in two oil …

Chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents: substituting our way toward human carcinogenicity.

A discussion of the history of substitutions in industrial solvent use is presented, and animal carcinogenicity studies with certain chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents are reviewed. The present knowledge on the association between occupational exposure to chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents and human carcinogenicity is summarized, including a critical review of 23 studies pertaining to human carcinogenicity. Several deficiencies are identified in these studies that make interpretation of the results uncertain, including poor characterization of exposures in qualitative and quantitative terms, the s…

[Exposure to solvents and tardy epilepsy: 2 clinical cases].

Organic solvents (OS) are widely used in industry and craft work. The neurotoxic effects of OS are well known in occupational exposure occurring in poor industrial hygiene conditions. There has been interest recently in a possible epileptogenic effect of OS exposure. Two cases are reported of late onset epilepsy observed in workers heavily exposed to OS. Case 1 was a 27-year-old male painter employed in a car body repair workshop. Solvent exposure was high for a few months because after his regular work, the man continued working as a car body painter in his own private concern. After a period…

Major neurological disease and occupational exposure to organic solvents.

Five patients are described who presented with major organic brain disease affecting one or more of pyramidal and extrapyramidal tracts, cerebellum, and higher cortical functions. All had a history of 10 years or more of regular occupational exposure to solvents in confined spaces, three in painting inside ships and the others in weapons maintenance and printing. All had been regularly exposed to high air vapour peaks as well as to skin contamination. Four showed some evidence of improvement after the exposure ceased. None was initially suspected of having a toxic encephalopathy by the consult…

Experimental study of combined effect of solvents and noise.

Experimental studies of simultaneous exposure of the organism to chemical compounds and other unfavourable occupational and social factors are of great importance for the understanding of the mechanisms of combined effect and the detection of the dose-effect dependence. On a total number of 2000 made Wistar rats, 7 series of experiments were carried out in which the combined effect of solvents widely used in industry (acetone, carbon disulphide, trichloroethylene) and noise at varying levels (1-2, 10 Limchr for the solvents and 85, 95 dB A for noise) and duration of exposure (1 1/2-2 and 4 mon…

Effects of organic solvents on motor activity in mice.

Groups of male mice were exposed via inhalation to methylene chloride, perchloroethylene, toluene, trichloroethylene or 1,1,1-trichloroethane. The exposures were started at 2300 h. Generation of vapor was stopped after 1 h. Motor activity of the animals during the exposures was measured with a Doppler radar. Several concentrations of each solvent were tested. Concentrations could be found for all solvents at which they initially increased the motor activity. When the generation of vapor was terminated and the concentration started to decline, a new phase of changes in motor activity was induce…

Mortality from heart disease among workers exposed to solvents.

Several rubber industry jobs that are associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality involve the use of solvents and, since the only known occupational cause of atherosclerosis is a solvent (carbon disulfide), solvent exposures may contribute to the CVD excess observed among rubber industry workers. Detailed exposure estimates for 25 solvents were available for a cohort of 1,282 white male production workers in a large rubber- and tire-manufacturing plant, and a survivorship analysis compared the CVD mortality experience of exposed and nonexposed workers during a 15-year follow-up peri…

Behavioral effects of long-term exposure to organic solvents.

Epidemiological studies have detected an increased risk of neuropsychiatric diseases among groups occupationally exposed to organic solvents. Psychological studies of solvent exposed workers have investigated both cognitive and sensory and motors functions. Most of these studies have dealt with trichloroethylene, toluene, styrene, and mixtures of organic solvents. Most of these studies have found a decline in the sensory and motor functions. Of the cognitive functions especially short-term memory has proved to be sensitive to solvent exposure. Also some implications of declined visuoconstructi…

Solvent Dictated Organic Transformations.

Solvent plays an important role in many chemical reactions. The C-H activation has been one of the most powerful tools in organic synthesis. These reactions are often assisted by solvents which not only provide a medium for the chemical reactions but also facilitate reaching to the product stage. The solvent helps the reaction profile both chemically and energetically to reach the targeted product. Organic transformations via C-H activation from the solvent assistance perspective has been discussed in this review. Various solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), MeCN, dichloromethane (DCM), dim…

Solvent Effects on the Menshutkin Reaction.

The Menshutkin reaction is a methyl transfer reaction relevant in fields ranging from biochemistry to chemical synthesis. In the present work, the energetics and solvent distributions for NH3+MeCl and Pyr+MeBr reactions were investigated in explicit solvent (water, methanol, acetonitrile, benzene, cyclohexane) by means of reactive molecular dynamics simulations. For polar solvents (water, methanol, and acetonitrile) and benzene, strong to moderate catalytic effects for both reactions were found, whereas apolar and bulky cyclohexane interacts weakly with the solute and does not show pronounced …

Epidemiological update on solvent neurotoxicity.

Epidemiological studies of occupational mixed solvent exposure were reviewed for evidence of exposure-related neuropsychiatric disorders, mental symptoms, and neurobehavioral performance. Studies of workers receiving disability pensions found consistent evidence of an increased risk of neuropsychiatric disability among solvent-exposed workers. Study results differed, however, with respect to relations between solvent exposure and specific diagnostic entities. These differences may be attributed to cross-country differences in diagnostic entities and criteria for disability pension eligibility.
