Diagnosis of testicular torsion using near infrared spectroscopy: A novel diagnostic approach.

We report a case of testicular torsion in a 14-month old boy. Testicular ischemia was suspected based on history and clinical presentations. The patient was referred following 24 hours of left acute scrotum. Erythema, swelling and tenderness associated with nausea and emesis were present, but the patient was not febrile. We used a spatially resolved near-infrared spectroscopy (SR-NIRS) device to study and compare the tissue saturation index (TSI) on both right and left spermatic cords. The TSI was significantly reduced in the left side. Both testicles were surgically explored and the left test

Early pregnancy diagnosis in sheep using near-infrared spectroscopy on blood plasma.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) to discriminate between pregnant and nonpregnant ewes in early stages of pregnancy after artificial insemination (AI) from blood plasma. Samples were collected using jugular puncture at 18 and 25 days after AI from 188 Rasa Aragonesa and Ansotana ewes. Plasma samples were analyzed for pregnancy-associated glycoprotein (PAG) and progesterone (P4) using ELISA commercial kits. The spectra of plasma samples were recorded in the visible and near-infrared ranges. The performance of these tests we

Near-infrared spectroscopy as continuous real-time monitoring for kidney graft perfusion.

BACKGROUND: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive technique designed to study regional oxygenation (rSO(2)) by measuring the absorption of chromophores. This study investigated the role of NIRS in the real-time monitoring of kidney graft perfusion for 72 h post-transplantation. METHODS: Consecutive children undergoing living related donor (LRD) or deceased donor (DD) kidney transplantation (KTP) were prospectively enrolled between April 2010 and August 2011. Renal rSO(2) values were registered continuously for 3 days and correlated with hourly urine output, serum creatinine, and

Working memory function in Chinese dyslexic children: a near-infrared spectroscopy study.

The deficiency theories of dyslexia are quite contradictory and the cross-cultural studies in recent years mainly focused on whether the dyslexics among cultures shared the same cognitive profile or just based on the language. This study used Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) imaging to measure the regional cerebral blood volume (BV) and the changes of cerebral activation in the left prefrontal cortex of 12 Chinese dyslexic children and their 12 age-matched normal controls during the Paced Visual Serial Addition Test (PVSAT). Results showed that the scores of PVSAT of dyslexic children were si

Estimating hydrogen cyanide in forage sorghum ( Sorghum bicolor ) by near-infrared spectroscopy.

Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is a toxic chemical that can potentially cause mild to severe reactions in animals when grazing forage sorghum. Developing technologies to monitor the level of HCN in the growing crop would benefit graziers, so that they can move cattle into paddocks with acceptable levels of HCN. In this study, we developed near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) calibrations to estimate HCN in forage sorghum and hay. The full spectral NIRS range (400-2498 nm) was used as well as specific spectral ranges within the full spectral range, i.e., visible (400-750 nm), shortwave (800-1100 nm) and n

Prefrontal cortex dysfunction during cognitive tests evidenced by functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Prefrontal cortex oxygenation changes in response to a verbal fluency task and a visual spatial working memory task were investigated by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) on nine patients with schizophrenia. Four patients were reactive to both tests; five reactive to only one of the two tests, suggesting the importance of reporting fNIRS results for each individual.

Screening for unilateral intracranial abnormalities using near infrared spectroscopy: a preliminary report.

Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is being increasingly used for medical applications, including neurosurgical care. This preliminary report describes the use of a low cost, indigenous, non-invasive system where NIRS is used to identify superficial unilateral intracranial abnormalities. The optical density (OD) over each hemisphere was initially studied in 50 normal volunteers. The specificity, sensitivity, reliability and reproducibility of the NIRS generated from the developed equipment in detecting OD were thus confirmed. The OD over each hemisphere was then measured in 71 other individuals

Evaluation of extracranial-intracranial arterial bypass function by using near-infrared spectroscopy.

OBJECT: It has been reported that extracranial-intracranial (EC-IC) arterial bypass surgery can be useful in preventing stroke in patients with hemodynamic compromise. Little is yet known, however, regarding the extent to which the bypass contributes to maintaining adequate cerebral blood oxygenation (CBO) and its temporal changes following surgery. The authors evaluated bypass function repeatedly by using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) after surgery. METHODS: The authors investigated 30 patients who had undergone EC-IC bypass surgery. Near-infrared spectroscopy cerebral oxygen saturation thresholds for hypoxia-ischemia in piglets.

Detection of cerebral hypoxia-ischemia remains problematic in neonates. Near-infrared spectroscopy, a noninvasive bedside technology has potential, although thresholds for cerebral hypoxia-ischemia have not been defined. This study determined hypoxic-ischemic thresholds for cerebral oxygen saturation (SCO2) in terms of EEG, brain ATP, and lactate concentrations, and compared these values with CBF and sagittal sinus oxygen saturation (SVO2). Sixty anesthetized piglets were equipped with near-infrared spectroscopy, EEG, laser-Doppler flowmetry, and a sagittal sinus catheter. After baseline, SCO2

Cerebral haemoglobin oxygenation during sustained visual stimulation--a near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Using near-infrared spectroscopy, we investigated the time-course of the concentrations of oxygenated haemoglobin, [oxy-Hb], and deoxygenated haemoglobin [deoxy-Hb], in the occipital cortex of healthy human adults during standard sustained visual stimulation. Within a few seconds after stimulation (by coloured dodecahedron), we observed a decrease in [deoxy-Hb], peaking after 13 s ('initial undershoot'). In the subsequent 1-2 min, in seven out of ten subjects, [deoxy-Hb] gradually returned to a plateau closer to the baseline level. After cessation of stimulation, there was a 'post-stimulus ove

Internal and external carotid contributions to near-infrared spectroscopy during carotid endarterectomy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The internal carotid (ICA) and external carotid (ECA) contributions to changing concentrations of oxyhemoglobin (Hbo2) and deoxyhemoglobin (Hb) during carotid endarterectomy were assessed with the use of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). METHODS: NIRS optodes were placed on the forehead with an interoptode distance of 6 cm, and laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) was used to monitor the change in skin blood flow between the optodes. Hb, Hbo2, LDF, arterial blood pressure, and middle cerebral artery flow velocity were recorded continuously. The ECA was clamped 2 minutes befo

Using depth-enhanced diffuse correlation spectroscopy and near-infrared spectroscopy to isolate cerebral hemodynamics during transient hypotension.

SIGNIFICANCE: Combining diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) permits simultaneous monitoring of multiple cerebral hemodynamic parameters related to cerebral autoregulation; however, interpreting these optical measurements can be confounded by signal contamination from extracerebral tissue. AIM: We aimed to evaluate extracerebral signal contamination in NIRS/DCS data acquired during transient hypotension and assess suitable means of separating scalp and brain signals. APPROACH: A hybrid time-resolved NIRS/multidistance DCS system was used to simultaneou

Advances in fully integrated wearable near-infrared spectroscopy: hardware innovations and biomedical applications.

The use of noninvasive near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has grown significantly over the past few decades for use in the characterization of tissue optical properties and derived physiological parameters such as tissue oxygen saturation and hemoglobin composition to support human health and wellness. Wearable NIRS devices have been developed in recent years that enable real-time continuous monitoring. These devices have been enabled by advances in the dense integration of miniature integrated circuits, light sources and detectors, embedded processing, and wireless technologies. The most attra

Correlation of noninvasive near-infrared spectroscopy with outcomes in pediatric traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Preventing cerebral hypoxia and hypoperfusion is crucial. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), which measures regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2), may provide a noninvasive method of identifying impaired cerebral oxygenation. Whether NIRS correlates with physiological variables or clinical changes following pediatric TBI is unknown, and its relationship with invasive intracranial pressure (ICP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), and brain tissue oxygenation (PbtO2) is poorly defined. METHODS:

Mathematical modeling and analysis for tissue curvature correction in near-infrared spectroscopy imaging.

SIGNIFICANCE: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) imaging modalities are used to provide noncontact measurements of tissue oxygenation in diabetic foot ulcers. However, the curved surface of the diabetic foot introduces inaccurate tissue oxygenation measurement. The changes in spatial NIRS optical measurements may result from variations in the underlying physiology or from the curvature of the tissue surface. Therefore, the effect of tissue curvature must be accounted for to ensure the accurate measurement of tissue oxygenation (or hemoglobin parameters) in clinical applications. AIM: Our aim i
