PURPOSE: To identify and highlight the variable causes of camptocormia.
METHOD: Literature review.
RESULTS: Camptocormia (bent spine syndrome) is an acquired postural disease characterised by forward flexion of the thoraco-lumbar spine. Camptocormia leads to lumbar kyphosis and increases during walking or standing and completely disappears in supine position. Camptocormia is multicausal due to central or peripheral nervous system disease, idiopathic or due to some rare conditions. Camptocormia is most frequently associated with Parkinson's disease. Other causes include dystonia, multisystem

The aim of this study was to evaluate sagittal thoracic and lumbar spinal curvatures and pelvic tilt in elite and master cyclists when standing on the floor, and sitting on a bicycle at three different handlebar-hand positions. A total of 60 elite male cyclists (mean age: 22.95 ± 3.38 years) and 60 master male cyclists (mean age: 34.27 ± 3.05 years) were evaluated. The Spinal Mouse system was used to measure sagittal thoracic and lumbar curvature in standing on the floor and sitting positions on the bicycle at three different handlebar-hand positions (high, medium, and low). The mean values fo…

Scoliosis is a spinal abnormality that has two types of curves (C-shaped or S-shaped). The vertebrae of the spine reach an equilibrium at different times, which makes it challenging to detect the type of curves. In addition, it may be challenging to detect curvatures due to observer bias and image quality. This paper aims to evaluate spinal deformity by automatically classifying the type of spine curvature. Automatic spinal curvature classification is performed using SVM and KNN algorithms, and pre-trained Xception and MobileNetV2 networks with SVM as the final activation function to avoid van

INTRODUCTION: The early evaluation of the spine in children is desirable because it is at this stage of development that the greatest changes in the body structures occur.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the test-retest, intra- and inter-rater reliability of the Flexicurve instrument for the evaluation of spinal curvatures in children.
METHOD: Forty children ranging from 5 to 15 years of age were evaluated by two independent evaluators using the Flexicurve to model the spine. The agreement was evaluated using Intraclass Correlation Coefficients (ICC), Standard Error of the Measurement (SEM), and Min…

We suggest that lumbar degenerative kyphosis be included as one of the abnormal sagittal curvatures in which a kyphosis or a marked loss of … a reversed ratio of extensors/flexors muscle power compared with normal controls and other types of spinal curvatures. Weakness of the lumbar extensors was clearly shown by isokinetic measurement and a marked atrophy of these muscles with fatty infiltration was demonstrated by CT scanning.

Intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMSCTs) in the growing spine can cause deformity characterized by neurologic deficits, atypical curvature, or pain. Children with atypical spinal curvature should undergo MRI to exclude spinal cord pathology. In adults, deformity with atypical pain or neurologic deficit similarly warrants MRI to rule out intradural lesions. Resection of an IMSCT can also lead to postoperative spinal deformity. Laminoplasty has been used as an alternative to laminectomy, but its impact on long-term alignment remains uncertain. Close spinal surveillance is recommended after res

This article reports on an observational and treatment case series involving 22 adolescents and preadolescents treated over a 15 year period who had or appeared to be developing idiopathic scoliosis (IS). Common patterns of muscle and fascial asymmetry were observed and treated. Most of these individuals had spinal area pain and the trigger points (TrPs) apparently responsible for this pain were located in muscles at some distance from the spine, yet referred pain to locations throughout the thoracolumbar spine. Asymmetries in tension in these muscles appear to tether the spine in such a way a

To assess changes in cervical curvature and demonstrate the feasibility of using ACAF technology to restore lordosis, imaging data from patients undergoing multilevel ACAF and ACDF surgeries were retrospectively analyzed. Forty-seven patients receiving multilevel ACAF and ACDF were included in the study. Total cervical curvature and anterior, middle, and posterior column curvature, spinal canal diameter, cervical range of motion, and surgical complications were measured and analyzed by non-parametric or chi-square tests before and after surgery. The Spearman correlation between imaging data wa

There is a large, at times contradictory, body of research relating spinal curvature to Low Back Pain (LBP). Mechanical load is considered as important factor in LBP etiology. Geometry of the spinal structures and sagittal curvature of the lumbar spine govern its mechanical behavior. Thus, understanding how inter-individual geometry particularly sagittal curvature variation affects the spinal load-sharing becomes of high importance in LBP assessment. This study calculated and compared kinematics and load-sharing in three ligamentous lumbosacral spines: one hypo-lordotic (Hypo-L) with low lordo

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Scoliosis and limb length discrepancy (LLD) are frequent findings in pediatric orthopedic practice. Because both conditions can alter posture and spinal alignment, distinguishing between a compensatory spinal curvature due to LLD and a true structural scoliosis is crucial. This review explores the relationship between scoliosis and LLD in children, emphasizing recent evidence and clinical strategies for accurate diagnosis and management.
RECENT FINDINGS: Minor limb length discrepancies are common in the general population. However, significant LLD (defined as >2 cm) can pro

Spinopelvic sagittal alignment has been shown to play an important role in pediatric and adult thoracolumbar spinal deformity. However, less is understood about the importance of sagittal alignment in the cervical spine and patients with adult cervical deformity. The purpose of this review article is to provide a comprehensive overview of contemporary principles pertaining to adult cervical deformity. Upper cervical parameters, regional cervical parameters, cervical shape classifications, and cervical deformity classifications will be reviewed based on the current literature.

This paper is a narrative review of normal cervical alignment, methods for quantifying alignment, and how alignment is associated with cervical deformity, myelopathy, and adjacent-segment disease (ASD), with discussions of health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Popular methods currently used to quantify cervical alignment are discussed including cervical lordosis, sagittal vertical axis, and horizontal gaze with the chin-brow to vertical angle. Cervical deformity is examined in detail as deformities localized to the cervical spine affect, and are affected by, other parameters of the spine in

Segmental instrumentation and fusion of spinal deformity in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy yields good correction and provides firm internal stabilization that allows rapid mobilization of patients following surgery. When surgery to stabilize spinal deformity is done in younger patients in whom pulmonary function is better and curves are milder, complication rate and length of hospital stay are diminished, correction and balance are improved, and patients rapidly return to their normal life-style. We no longer routinely attempt orthotic treatment of these curvatures, but advise stab

Four basic types of orthoses are now being used at the Twin Cities Scoliosis Center for the treatment of spinal curvatures. The Milwaukee Brace, either custom-made or using a prefabricated pelvic section is the orthosis of choice for thoracic scoliosis and kyphosis in the ambulatory child. For lumbar and thoracolumbar curves, the one-piece "TLSO" has proven the most effective design. For the collapsing spine of myelomeningocele, childhood paraplegia, and spinal muscular atrophy, the 2-piece bivalved polypropylene body jacket is excellent. For the severely involved cerebral palsy or Duchenne Dy…

BACKGROUND: Pushing activities are associated with a considerable risk for back disorders. Previous findings verify that pushing tasks influence trunk position, but do not establish how spinal posture and curvature change when pushing while walking. There is no information about how changes in spinal curvature are influenced by the load being pushed and the velocity at which it is pushed.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Purpose of this study was therefore to evaluate the effect on spinal posture of varying loads during the sustained phase of pushing activities while walking at different velocities.

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to compare characteristics of postural sway and shape of anteroposterior spinal curvatures in faller and non-faller elderly women.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study enrolled 265 women aged 51-82 years (mean: 66.2) who were physically fit and free from conditions affecting sensorimotor function. Balance was assessed by stabilographic method. Changes in the location of the centre of the force of foot pressure on the ground were registered over 20-second periods with the subjects standing still with eyes open and closed. Measures of variability in the COP signal were an…
