Splenic Peliosis as a Rare Cause of Spontaneous Splenic Rupture: A Case Report.

Atraumatic splenic rupture is a serious intraabdominal emergency that requires emergent intervention. This can be due to a number of causes. In this case report, we introduce a rare cause of atraumatic splenic rupture, which is an otherwise benign asymptomatic disease that only manifests clinically upon rupture, namely splenic peliosis. There is limited existing knowledge concerning the disease's etiology and diagnosis; however, this study presents the possible etiological explanations, associated risk factors, and possible radiologic diagnostic modalities.

Comparison of splenic embolization and splenectomy for traumatic splenic rupture: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to assess the safety and clinical efficacy of percutaneous splenic embolization (PSE) and splenectomy as approaches to treating cases of traumatic splenic rupture (TSR). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eligible articles published throughout August 2023 were identified. Endpoints compared between PSE and splenectomy patient groups included operative time, intraoperative hemorrhage, duration of hospitalization, postoperative complication rates, and measures of immune function. RESULTS: Thirteen studies, involving 474 and 520 patients in the PSE and splenectomy groups respec

Splenic Metastatic Choriocarcinoma with Nontraumatic Splenic Rupture: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Choriocarcinoma is a highly malignant trophoblastic tumor that occurs mostly in women of childbearing age. The main mode of metastasis is hematogenous metastasis. The most common sites of metastasis are the lung, vagina and brain, while splenic metastasis is rare. Because of its rapid development, extensive metastasis can occur in a short period, and some patients only show metastatic symptoms, which are often missed or misdiagnosed as ectopic pregnancy or other diseases. We describe a rare case of splenic metastatic choriocarcinoma with acute abdominal pain caused by nontraumatic splenic rupt

Splenic artery embolization for spontaneous splenic rupture due to Babesiosis: a case report.

Babesiosis incidence in the United States has been increasing with an 11% rise between 2018 and 2019 based on the latest CDC annual summary, reaching its highest ever reported incidence. This primarily tick-borne disease is particularly prevalent in New England. Despite predominantly nonspecific and at times subtle symptoms, life-threatening complications do occur. One such complication is splenic rupture which has been suggested to be more common in younger and otherwise healthy individuals. This is a report on a successful splenic artery embolization in a 65-year-old male from upstate New Yo

Unexpected death due to spontaneous splenic rupture: A rare case in splenic angiosarcoma.

Splenic angiosarcoma (SA) is a rare disease that can cause spontaneous splenic rupture leading to unexpected death. The rare incidence and non-specific clinical presentations made the early correct diagnosis of SA impossible in clinical practice. Even with medical intervention, 80% of patients died within 6 months after diagnosis. Here, we report a man who had complained of abdominal distension for 2 weeks and succumbed to the disease nine hours after admission. Diagnosis of hepatic and splenic angiosarcomas was based on post-mortem histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry, and t

Splenic rupture secondary to diverticulitis: a case report.

Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) is a rare condition that may be idiopathic or may occur in the setting of certain inflammatory processes, infections, malignancies, and autoimmune conditions. Here, we report a very rare case of ASR secondary to complicated diverticulitis. A 49-year-old female presented with sudden onset of severe abdominal pain on the day after discharge, following attempted non-operative treatment of perforated diverticulitis at the splenic flexure. She denied any history of trauma. Computed tomography showed new splenic subcapsular hematoma and gas consistent with splenic ru

Splenic Rupture in Infectious Mononucleosis: A Case Report.

Splenic ruptures are rarely seen in infectious mononucleosis (IM), caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is a self-limiting viral infection characterized by fever, pharyngitis, and lymphadenopathy. While most cases are mild and resolve without complications, rare and severe complications can arise, including splenic rupture, which is a potentially life-threatening event. Previous case reports have linked splenic rupture to IM with increased splenic size. We present an atypical case report of splenic rupture in a young adult diagnosed with IM, whose spleen was found to be of normal size. T

Splenic rupture after colonoscopy for colorectal cancer screening.

Colonoscopy is a frequently used procedure in our environment for the diagnosis, treatment and even prevention of colorectal cancer. Despite being a routine procedure, it is not exempt from possible complications. Bleeding and perforation are the main ones, with splenic rupture being extremely infrequent as well as one of the most serious complications derived from performing a colonoscopy. We present a patient with splenic rupture secondary to colorectal cancer screening colonoscopy who required urgent surgery for acute hemorrhagic shock.

[Spontaneous splenic rupture. Case report and literature review].

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous splenic rupture is often life threatening due to delay in diagnosis and treatment. Abdominal pain, Kehr's sign, nausea, bloating, altered consciousness, and intestinal obstruction may be present. In larger splenic lesions, signs of peritonitis and hypovolemic shock are present. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography is the election study. Diagnosis is confirmed by negative viral serology and normal spleen on gross and histopathologic inspection. The most frequent treatment in splenectomy. CLINIC CASE: A 30-year-old male with no medical history presented with generalized

Atraumatic splenic rupture in patient with acute pancreatitis.

Atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) is a rare complication of acute pancreatitis with high mortality and morbidity rates. We present a case of a 63-year-old woman with a history of hypertension, presenting with acute pancreatitis who subsequently developed a splenic rupture requiring a laparotomy and splenectomy. ASR is a rare but life-threatening complication requiring prompt recognition and management and should be considered in patient with pancreatitis who develops sudden haemodynamic compromise and worsening anaemia.

Spontaneous Splenic Rupture due to Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer.

Introduction. Nontraumatic splenic rupture is a rare event. On the other hand, splenic metastasis is also rare and usually found in the context of disseminated disease. Spontaneous splenic rupture caused by a metastatic deposit has been reported only as case reports. To the best of our knowledge, pancreatic cancer being the primary site has been reported in only a handful of cases. Case Presentation. A case of spontaneous splenic rupture in a 68-year-old male presenting with acute onset left shoulder pain, caused by metastatic pancreatic cancer to the spleen, is presented herein. During the in

[Hemoperitoneum with Splenic Artery Rupture Following Diagnostic Colonoscopy].

Colonoscopy is a safe and extremely popular diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. The most common complications are bleeding and perforation. Hemoperitoneum is a rare complication after a colonoscopy and is usually associated with splenic injury or solid organ pathology. This is potentially serious and can be life threatening. With the increasing number of colonoscopies performed, there has also been an increasing trend in reports of rare complications, such as pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, appendicitis, small bowel perforation, septicemia, mesenteric tear, retroperitoneal abscess, and hemo

Spontaneous Splenic Rupture Two Weeks After Sleeve Gastrectomy.

Sleeve gastrectomy is one of the commonest bariatric procedures performed globally with an acceptable rate of reported complications. Splenic injury during this procedure is a rare but can be a serious complication. A 32-year-old male patient who had a spontaneous splenic rupture two weeks after an uneventful sleeve gastrectomy needed an emergency splenectomy. Spontaneous rupture after sleeve gastrectomy is an extremely rare condition with one single previous report. Diagnosis needs a high clinical suspicion and treatment is usually by splenectomy if not responding to resuscitative measures. S

Spontaneous Splenic Rupture following Colorectal Surgery and Hemodialysis.

Atraumatic splenic rupture is rarely encountered in clinical practice compared to traumatic rupture. General risk factors include hematological, infectious, or malignant splenic diseases, uremic coagulopathy, use of heparin, hypertension, and immune-compromised status. Spontaneous splenic rupture following colorectal surgery has never been reported. Maintaining a high index of suspicion in patients presenting with left upper quadrant pain and tenderness is crucial. Diagnosis can be made with the aid of an ultrasound or CT scan. The management plan should be tailored to the patient's clinical c
