Normal variation of talar tilt of the ankle in children.

Sixty normal children were examined clinically and radiologically, using a special apparatus with a goniometer and a tensometer to standardize stress tests when applying valgus and varus forces to the ankle. It was noted that the clinical movement of inversion is not entirely due to a subtalar movement; indeed a talar tilt appears to be physiological. The range of normal in these patients, age range 6 to 15 years, was 0 to 27 degrees with an average talar tilt of 7 degrees . The talar tilt is not necessarily the same in both ankles of any one individual and it is never noted in eversion. The t

Characterization of Injuries Suffered by Mounted and Non-Mounted Police Officers.

Mounted police officers are subject to unique occupational tasks which may lead to unique injuries. This study's aim was to describe policin … ce were animal handling (64.9%) as opposed to arresting an offender (31.2%) for non-mounted police. Sprains and strains and bruises and swelling were the leading natures of injuries among both mounted (44.4% and 29.1%, respectively) and non-mounted (36.6% and 21.2%, respectively) officers. The leading body sites of injury in mounted officers were the lower back (13.9 …

Lateral Ankle Sprain and Subsequent Ankle Sprain Risk: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the evidence regarding the association between lateral ankle sprain (LAS) history and the subsequent LAS risk, as well as sex differences in the observed associations. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus were searched through July 2020 for articles on LAS history and incidence during the study period. STUDY SELECTION: Studies were included if they were prospective in nature and the authors reported the number of participants with and those without a history of LAS at study initiation as well as the number of participants in each group who sustained an LAS dur

The cold truth: the role of cryotherapy in the treatment of injury and recovery from exercise.

Cryotherapy is utilized as a physical intervention in the treatment of injury and exercise recovery. Traditionally, ice is used in the treatment of musculoskeletal injury while cold water immersion or whole-body cryotherapy is used for recovery from exercise. In humans, the primary benefit of traditional cryotherapy is reduced pain following injury or soreness following exercise. Cryotherapy-induced reductions in metabolism, inflammation, and tissue damage have been demonstrated in animal models of muscle injury; however, comparable evidence in humans is lacking. This absence is likely due to

Ankle Sprains: Evaluation, Rehabilitation, and Prevention.

Ankle sprains affect athletic populations at high rates. Athletes who suffer an ankle sprain frequently go on to develop persistent symptoms, resulting in significant resources spent toward treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention. A thorough clinical evaluation is necessary to ensure an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment prescription. This narrative review aims to present an approach to evaluation of high and low ankle sprains for athletes of all levels. The authors review the current evidence for ankle sprain treatment and rehabilitation. Strategies for prevention of recurrent spr

Syndesmotic ankle sprain.

Ankle sprain injuries are the most common type of joint sprain. The prevalence of ankle joint sprains accounts for 21% of joint injuries in the body. Although somewhat rare, high-ankle or syndesmotic ankle sprains occur in up to 15% of ankle trauma. This article will present the pathomechanics of the high-ankle or syndesmotic sprain.

Injuries in cross-country skiing. Trail markers for diagnosis and treatment.

Cross-country skiers can suffer acute injuries, such as sprains of the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb, the medial collateral ligament of the knee, and the ankle. They are also subject to overuse injuries, including arthritic changes in the great toe, and are at risk for cold-related injuries. Most of these injuries can be treated conservatively, and some can be avoided with adequate preparation and training.

Ankle sprains and other soft tissue injuries.

Lateral ankle sprains are the most frequently encountered injuries in sports. In the evaluation of lateral ankle injury, one should consider all soft tissue structures (i.e., peroneal tendons, ligaments of the ankle, subtalar joints, around the lateral ankle). The treatment of most ankle sprains has evolved from immobilization to functional rehabilitation. Many patients with ankle sprains return to their previous activities. A few patients are left with pain and residual instability after conservative treatment; thus, the question of when to operate on acute severe ankle sprain remains controv

Cycling injuries.

Bicycle-related injuries have increased as cycling has become more popular. Most injuries to recreational riders are associated with overuse or improper fit of the bicycle. Injuries to racers often result from high speeds, which predispose riders to muscle strains, collisions, and falls. Cyclists contact bicycles at the pedals, seat, and handlebars. Each is associated with particular cycling injuries.
