The Effect of the Lingzhi or Reishi Medicinal Mushroom Ganoderma lucidum (Agaricomycetes) Administration on the Functional State of Erythrocytes in Rats with Experimental Metabolic Syndrome.

The research examined how the extract of Ganoderma lucidum mushroom mycelium affects the functional state of erythrocytes in rats with fructose-induced metabolic syndrome (MetS). MetS was induced by a high-carbohydrate diet: for 42 d, the animals consumed a 10% fructose solution instead of drinking water. Following the induction of MetS, the rats were treated with G. lucidum mycelium extract for 14 d at a dose of 1 g/kg of body weight. It was found that administration of the extract to animals with MetS resulted in a gradual reduction in body weight and a 13.2% decrease in blood plasma glucose

Evaluating Community Awareness of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and New Educational Programs in Fresno County, United States: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Introduction  Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) is a patient-centered, evidence-based approach emphasizing the body's ability to self-heal and the interrelationship between structure and function. Despite its established history and growing recognition, public awareness of OMM and the role of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DOs) remains limited, particularly in underserved regions such as Fresno County, California. With the recent establishment of California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine (CHSU-COM) in Clovis, understanding local awareness and perceptions of o

Current State-Of-Play of the EU Advanced Therapy Medicinal Product (ATMP) Field, With an Emphasis on Belgian Human Cell and Tissue Products.

The late 1980s saw the emergence of experimental therapies based on human cell and tissue products (HCTPs) within academic and hospital settings, several of them wound healing related. In 2008, the European Commission introduced the Regulation on advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), defining many of these HCTPs as ATMPs, and more specifically as somatic cell therapy medicinal products (sCTMPs) or tissue-engineered products (TEPs). In 2013, we predicted that the ATMP regulation would adversely impact Member States' health care systems and would threaten the sustainability of many HCTPs

What is the state of the art on traditional medicine interventions for zoonotic diseases in the Indian subcontinent? A scoping review of the peer-reviewed evidence base.

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicine (TM) interventions are plausible therapeutic alternatives to conventional medical interventions against emerging and endemic zoonotic diseases, particularly in low-and middle-income countries that may lack resources and infrastructure. Despite the growing popularity in the usage of TM interventions, their clinical safety and effectiveness are still contested within conventional healthcare in many countries. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the peer-reviewed literature that synthesises and maps the evidence on TM interventions for the treatment and pre

The treatment of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine to cure severe immune thrombocytopenia in a patient in a minimally conscious state: a case report.

Immune thrombocytopenia is a common complication in patients in a minimally conscious state (MCS). MCS patients are prone to pulmonary infection for the reasons of long-term bed rest and tracheotomy etc., which leads to frequent immune thrombocytopenia. At present, there is no specific treatment for immune thrombocytopenia. Moreover, the cost of routine treatment is high, and clinicians need to consider different drug combinations, side effects, and the risk of drug dependence when selecting treatments. Here, we report a case of a patient in a MCS who developed immune thrombocytopenia after tr

Equity of African American Men in Headache in the United States: A Perspective From African American Headache Medicine Specialists (Part 1).

Migraine and severe headache affect approximately 1 in 6 U.S. adults and migraine is one of the most disabling disorders worldwide. Approximately 903,000 to 1.5 million African American (AA) men are affected by migraine in the United States. Racial disparities in headache medicine exist. In addition, there are limited headache studies that attest to the inclusion of or have robust data on AA men in headache medicine in the United States. Racial concordance between provider and patient may ameliorate some aspects of care disparities. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that diversity and inclusi

Pre-Scan State and Trait Anxiety Among Cancer Patients Undergoing Bone Scintigraphy: A Cross-Sectional Study with Implications for Patient-Centered Care in Nuclear Medicine.

INTRODUCTION: Bone scintigraphy is a sensitive nuclear medicine imaging technique widely used to detect skeletal metastases in cancer patients. Although minimally invasive, anticipation of scan results and concerns regarding disease progression may provoke psychological distress. Understanding anxiety prior to bone scintigraphy is important for improving patient-centered care in nuclear medicine practice. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate pre-scan state and trait anxiety among cancer patients undergoing bone scintigraphy and to identify demographic factors associated with increased anxie

State of health and its association with death among old people at three-years follow-up. II. Consumption of medicine subjective and objective general health.

Five hundred eighty-five inhabitants of Copenhagen, aged 75, 80, and 85 years, were visited in their homes and asked about consumption of medicine and subjective health; in addition, a general medical examination was carried out by a physician. Taking biological aging into consideration, 34.8% of the participants were found to be of normal health. The 75 year-old men differed from the other age groups and the women by having a better subjective and objective health. A total of 74.5% of the participants claimed to be in good health. After three years and again after five years, mortality was fo

Definitive Airway Management in the Critical Care Transport Medicine Environment: An Exploratory Convenience Survey-Based Analysis of Retrieval Experts on the Profound Shock State Patient.

OBJECTIVE: Airway management in profoundly unstable patients, particularly those in a peri-arrest state, remains a contentious issue in out-of-hospital environments. Although there is robust literature on advanced airway procedures for acutely ill patients, literature on prehospital patients in profound shock is sparse. This study represents a survey-based analysis of critical care transport medicine (CCTM) experts to describe the challenges and strategies for intubating patients with significant hemodynamic instability. METHODS: Before the Air Medical Physician Symposium (AMPS) Lite, an onli

Assessment of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding the use of traditional medicine for treating malaria among residents of Woreta Town, Amhara Regional State, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Traditional medicine (TM) refers to health practices, approaches, knowledge, and beliefs that incorporate remedies from plants, animals, and minerals, along with spiritual therapies, manual techniques, and exercises used to diagnose, treat, or prevent illnesses, including malaria. In resource-limited settings, including Ethiopia, TM continues to serve as an alternative treatment option for both infectious and non-infectious diseases, such as malaria. However, the knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to the use of TM have not been adequately assessed in many communities. OBJE

Limited Availability of Short Tandem Repeat Genotype Testing in the United States for Diagnosis of Partial Hydatidiform Mole: A Dilemma for Practicing Precision Medicine.

The pathogenetic definition of a partial hydatidiform mole (PHM) is a diandric triploid gestation, thereby requiring short tandem repeat (STR) genotype testing for definitive diagnosis in formalin-fixed products of conception (POC) specimens. However, recent literature shows there is limited access to this test, even in high-income countries. Therefore, we hypothesized that in the United States, access to this test would be enriched in academic centers and commercial reference laboratories. We surveyed the Association for Molecular Pathology membership and directly queried selected commercial

Performance of a first-trimester combined screening for preterm preeclampsia in the United States population using the fetal medicine foundation competing risks model.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia complicates 2% to 8% of pregnancies and is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. In the United States, current guidelines recommend low-dose aspirin based on clinical risk factors, which identify only a minority of those at risk for preterm preeclampsia. The Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) competing risks algorithm improves prediction by combining maternal characteristics, biophysical parameters, and biochemical markers. While validated internationally, its performance in the U.S. population remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the perf
