Vesicular stomatitis forecasting based on Google Trends.

BACKGROUND: Vesicular stomatitis (VS) is an important viral disease of livestock. The main feature of VS is irregular blisters that occur on the lips, tongue, oral mucosa, hoof crown and nipple. Humans can also be infected with vesicular stomatitis and develop meningitis. This study analyses 2014 American VS outbreaks in order to accurately predict vesicular stomatitis outbreak trends. METHODS: American VS outbreaks data were collected from OIE. The data for VS keywords were obtained by inputting 24 disease-related keywords into Google Trends. After calculating the Pearson and Spearman correl…

Oral medicine case book 65: Necrotising stomatitis.

Necrotising stomatitis is a fulminating anaerobic polybacterial infection affecting predominantly the oral mucosa of debilitated malnourished children or immunosuppressed HIV-seropositive subjects. It starts as necrotising gingivitis which progresses to necrotising periodontitis and subsequently to necrotising stomatitis. In order to prevent the progression of necrotising stomatitis to noma (cancrum oris), affected patients should be vigorously treated and may require admission to hospital. Healthcare personnel should therefore be familiar with the signs and symptoms of necrotising gingivitis/…

Hematological study of patients with aphthous stomatitis.

OBJECTIVES: A study was made of the association between recurrent aphthosis (RAS) and iron, ferritin, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiency. METHODS: A total of 186 adults were consecutively recruited: 92 subjects with RAS (28 males and 64 females, with a mean age of 41 years) and 94 controls (20 men and 74 women, with a mean age of 44 years), and subjected to clinical and hematological evaluation. RESULTS: The overall frequency of hematinic deficiencies was 14.14% in the RAS group versus 6.39% in the control group (P = 0.086). Patient age and a family history of aphthosis were associated t

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis: genetic aspects of etiology.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS; recurrent aphthous ulcers - RAU; canker sores) is a chronic inflammatory, ulcerative condition of the oral mucosa. Its prevalence in the general population ranges between 5% and 20%, depending on the method and group studied. The etiopathogenesis of the disease is considered to be multifactorial, but remains still not fully understood. In patients with RAS, an enhanced immunologic response occurs to some trigger factors that may include: mechanical injury, stress or bacterial and viral antigens. Higher prevalence of aphthae in relatives may also indicate the…

Mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor-associated stomatitis.

With the recent introduction of inhibitors of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in oncology, distinct cutaneous and oral adverse events have been identified. In fact, stomatitis and rash are documented as the most frequent and potentially dose-limiting side effects. Clinically, mTOR inhibitor-associated stomatitis (mIAS) more closely resembles aphthous stomatitis than oral mucositis due to conventional anticancer therapies. While most cases of mIAS are mild to moderate and self-limiting, more severe and persistent mIAS can become a dose-limiting toxicity. Small ulcerations may cause signifi…

Thyroid autoimmunity associated with recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the periodic appearance of aphthous lesions on the oral mucosa. TH1 cytokines plays a key role in the aetiopathogenesis. Autoimmune thyroid disease (ATD) is the most common autoimmune disease and is frequently accompanied by various other autoimmune diseases. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the frequency of ATD which has not been studied in the patients with RAS. METHODS: Ninety patients and 30 healthy volunteers were included into the study. The serum samples were assayed for thyroid stimulant hormone (TSH)…

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis: evidence of autoimmune pathogenesis.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic ulcerative stomatitis is a condition characterized by chronic, painful oral ulcers, whose pathogenesis is unknown. Patients demonstrate specific IgG autoantibodies against ΔNp63α, an epithelial nuclear transcription factor. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of patient autoantibodies in the disease pathogenesis. METHODS: Three-dimensional in vitro tissues consisting of a fully differentiated, multilayer epithelium that mimics its in vivo counterpart were incubated with serum from patients with chronic ulcerative stomatitis. RESULTS: Our results show a subep…

Autoimmunity to deltaNp63alpha in chronic ulcerative stomatitis.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS) is a recently described mucocutaneous condition in which patients experience chronic, painful, ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa. CUS is diagnosed by immunofluorescence studies that demonstrate antinuclear antibodies. These autoantibodies are specific for a protein, deltaNp63alpha, which is normally expressed in basal cell nuclei of stratified squamous epithelia. The purpose of this study was to characterize the autoimmune response in CUS. Protein antigens were produced by in vitro transcription/translation of polymerase chain-reaction (PCR)-amplified cD…

Canine mycotic stomatitis due to Candida albicans.

Candida albicans, a medically important opportunistic yeast is described as the etiologic agent of stomatitis in dogs. The oral swabs collected from 34 dogs showing symptoms of stomatitis or gingivitis such as anorexia, halitosis, bleeding within the oral cavity, dysphagia, ptyalism (salivation) and submandibular lymphadenopathy were cultured for isolation of the causative agent. C. albicans was isolated from four (11.8%) dogs. The isolates were sensitive to clotrimazole, fluconazole and amphotericin-B but were resistant to nystatin. The routine application of Pal's sunflower seed medium and N…

Etiology and Management of Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is an ulcerative condition that affects the oral mucosa without evidence of an underlying medical disorder. RAS is characterized by the appearance of round, shallow ulcerations surrounded by inflammation that chiefly involves the nonkeratinized mucosa. The etiology of RAS is unknown, but has a strong hereditary component and appears to be related to an immune reaction against the oral mucosa. RAS must be distinguished from other diseases that cause recurring oral ulcers such as Behçet's syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Crohn's disease. This paper …

Polymorphonuclear neutrophil function in recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are the predominant cell type in the established lesion of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). The function of these cells was studied in 15 patients with RAS and 15 age and sex matched controls. Production of oxygen radicals was assessed using cytochrome-c and nitroblue tetrazolium dye (NBT) reduction assays. Oxidative metabolism was found to be similar for experimental and control groups in both stimulated and non-stimulated assays. Adherence to glass surfaces by PMN was also measured. Adherence of PMN, both from patients and controls, was significantly r…

HIV-associated periodontitis complicated by necrotizing stomatitis.

This report describes a case of HIV-associated periodontitis complicated by necrotizing stomatitis in a homosexual male patient with AIDS. Necrotizing stomatitis is a rapidly progressive ulcerative and necrotic infection that causes massive destruction of the oral tissues and underlying bone. Like HIV periodontitis, it appears to be related to the immune suppression caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection; importantly, it may be life threatening. In this case, initial resolution resulted from local debridement in association with metronidazole therapy. Long-term clinical managem…

Bovine papular stomatitis incidence in veterinary students.

Five cases of probable bovine papular stomatitis in faculty and students in a university veterinary clinic precipitated an intensive surveillance program. A senior class of veterinary medical students was questioned at the beginning of their clinical training to determine their history of exposure to cattle and presence of lesions resembling bovine papular stomatitis. Fifty-nine of the 115 students reported having had their hands in the mouths of cattle frequently. One of the 59 had experienced a hand lesion resembling bovine papular stomatitis. This class was maintained under close surveillan…

Allergic stomatitis caused by self-polymerizing resin.

This is a fully documented case, including biopsy and patch testing, of a patient who was hypersensitive to self-polymerizing polymethyl methacrylate. On two occasions, a 24-year-old woman with a history of multiple allergies developed allergic reactions to temporary acrylic dental restorations. The lesions disappeared upon removal of the restorations. Microscopic findings were consistent with an allergic reaction. Patch testing confirmed that the allergen was the monomer and indicated methods of processing the self-polymerizing resin to allow it to become essentially nonreactive in a sensitiz
