Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as group B streptococcus (GBS), can cause pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia, making it a pathogen that can increase the risk of death in newborns and immunodeficient individuals. Neutrophils are the first barrier to a host's innate immune defense against these infections. Fpr2(Formyl peptide receptor 2) is an important chemotactic receptor of neutrophils, though its activation would cause pro- and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we found that mice without Fpr2 receptor were highly susceptible to GBS infections. These mice demonstrated decrease…

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococcus [GBS]) is a major cause of infections in newborns, pregnant women, and immunocompromised patients. GBS strain CNCTC10/84 is a clinical isolate that has high virulence in animal models of infection and has been used extensively to study GBS pathogenesis. Two unusual features of this strain are hyperhemolytic activity and hypo-CAMP factor activity. These two phenotypes are typical of GBS strains that are functionally deficient in the CovR-CovS two-component regulatory system. A previous whole-genome sequencing study found that strain CNCTC10/84 has…

Streptococcus agalactiae or group B streptococcus (GBS) is a frequent pathogen in immunocompromised adults. The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency, clinical presentation, antimicrobial susceptibility profile, and risk factors associated with GBS bacteremia in non-pregnant adult patients. We conducted a retrospective analysis of blood cultures performed in two hospitals between the years 2009-2013. From 1110 bacteremia episodes, 13 were caused by GBS, all of which were susceptible to ampicillin. GBS bacteremia was more frequent in females and in patients older than 60 yea…

We report a case of group B streptococcus meningitis in a 72-year-old female patient who was admitted in our hospital with a 21-day history of bilateral lower thigh pain and swelling associated with fever, headache, and vomiting. Her past medical history was remarkable for DM type 2, hypertension, and hypothyroidism. Upon admission, examination showed bilateral warmth and tender soft tissue swelling around the knees and MRI showed cellulitis of distal thirds of both thighs. The next day, the patient became drowsy. Neurologic examination showed neck rigidity and right sided hemiparesis. Cerebro

This case report describes the unusual presentation of a previously very well woman with Streptococcus agalactiae endocarditis in the emergency department. History, examination and preliminary laboratory and radiological investigations supported a diagnosis of acalculous cholecystitis, for which she was given intravenous broad spectrum antimicrobial therapy. One day following admission, the patient deteriorated and became unresponsive. Subsequent MRI of the brain revealed multiple bihemispheric cerebral emboli and a large, mobile mitral valve thrombus was visualised on her transoesophageal ech…

Streptococcus agalactiae (group B Streptococcus, GBS) is the leading cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis and an important pathogen in elderly patients and those with underlying diseases. The diagnosis of GBS infections is primarily based on culture of GBS. Some clinical laboratories perform the Christie-Atkins-Munch-Peterson (CAMP) test for discrimination of GBS from other streptococci. Here, we developed a rapid GBS identification method, i.e., the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) method for detecting the cfb gene encoding the CAMP factor. This method detected at least 4 copi…

The pathological changes present in 300 red tilapias (Oreochromis spp.) naturally infected by Streptococcus agalactiae are described. The most consistent gross findings were marked congestion of internal organs, particularly the liver, spleen and kidneys. Other features included exophthalmos, softening of the brain and the occasional accumulation of fluid within the abdominal cavity. Microscopical examination confirmed the presence of marked congestion of the liver, spleen and kidneys. The endothelial cells lining major blood vessels of the liver and occasionally the spleen were swollen and va…

Beta-hemolytic Streptococcus agalactiae serotype V was identified as the cause of an infection in laboratory mice. Principally, the organism induced fatal septicemia in DBA/2 breeding-age mice. The syndrome appeared to originate as an ascending pyelonephritis, which progressed to septicemia. Microscopic lesions were found in the heart, kidneys, spleen, and liver, and less commonly in the uterus, thoracic cavity, lymph nodes, and lungs. The epizootic was controlled by eradication of the breeding colonies, disinfection of the barrier, and autoclaving of all equipment. The new replacement colonie…

This study assessed the occurrence of Streptococcus spp. in milk samples from cows with visible clinical mastitis signs and from cows with high (≥ 200,000 cells/mL) or low (< 200,000 cells/mL) somatic cell counts (SCC) across five Brazilian regions. Antimicrobial resistance and virulence-associated genes were investigated using phenotypic assays and whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Among 1,447 milk samples, Streptococcus agalactiae was the predominant species, followed by Streptococcus uberis and Streptococcus dysgalactiae, with most isolates associated with high SCC samples. Positive samples pr…

BACKGROUND: Pyomyoma is a rare, but potentially fatal, complication of uterine leiomyoma. Most cases occur in postpartum or postmenopausal patients with vascular disease and arise due to infarction and infection of existing fibroids. The proposed diagnostic triad for pyomyoma includes 1) sepsis or bacteremia; 2) uterine leiomyomata; and 3) no other apparent source of infection. We present a case of a postmenopausal patient who presented with the aforementioned triad and was found to have a pyomyoma, positive for Streptococcus agalactiae.

Streptococcus agalactiae is a rare cause of meningitis in healthy adults. We herein report a case of culture-negative Streptococcus agalactiae meningitis in a healthy adult which was diagnosed using the FilmArray Meningitis and Encephalitis Panel. A healthy 22-year-old man presented with a fever, headache, and neck stiffness. Despite negative results from blood and cerebrospinal fluid cultures, the diagnosis was confirmed using the FilmArray Meningitis and Encephalitis Panel. The patient was treated with dexamethasone, vancomycin, and ceftriaxone, and thereafter recovered completely. This repo…

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B streptococcus [GBS]) is the most common cause of sepsis and meningitis in infants <3 months of age. Intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis (IAP) is effective in preventing the transmission of GBS to newborns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines suggest vaginal and rectal cultures to assess GBS colonization between 35 and 37 weeks' gestation.
METHODS: Between July and December 2013, we identified 535 women admitted to the Obstetric and Gynecology Unit of Cardarelli Hospital (Campobasso, Italy) for delivery. We evaluated th…
