Post-traumatic Stress Disorder after Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: The review aimed to summarize the existing knowledge base regarding post-traumatic stress disorder after severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and try to guide future research. METHOD: Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases were used to identify original studies that explored the relationship between severe TBI and post-traumatic stress disorder. RESULTS: A total of 13 studies were included in the review. They have been examined in terms of potentially compatible and incompatible mechanisms, as well as of possible confounding factors in relation to the diagnosis of post-trauma

Treatment With Nepicastat Decreases Contextual Traumatic Memories Persistence in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common anxiety mental disorder and can be manifested after exposure to a real or perceived life-threatening event. Increased noradrenaline and adrenaline in plasma and urine have been documented in PTSD. Dopamine-β-hydroxylase (DBH) catalyzes the conversion of dopamine to noradrenaline and consequently, DBH inhibition reduces catecholamines. Our aim was to evaluate if nepicastat treatment decreases PTSD signs in an animal model. Wild-type (129x1/SvJ) female mice were submitted to PTSD induction protocol. DBH-inhibitor nepicastat (30 mg/kg) or vehicle

Post-traumatic stress disorder attributed to traumatic brain injury in children - a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the proportion of pediatric patients who develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) attributed to traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: PubMed and Embase were searched from database inception until January 26, 2019. Two independent investigators screened titles, abstracts, and subsequently, full-text articles. Following this, the same investigators also extracted data relevant for the scope of this review. RESULTS: Ten articles were included in this review. In these, six unique cohorts were described, with relative frequencies of PTSD attributed TBI ranging from 3.3%

Young Patients with Anorexia Nervosa: The Contribution of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Events.

Background and Objectives: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex disorder whose etiopathogenesis involves both biological and environmental factors. The aims of the present study were to retrospectively analyze risk factors in young patients with AN and to assess differences in clinical and eating-related symptoms between patients with and without a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and with or without a history of acknowledged risk factors. Materials and Methods: Sixty-four patients with AN (<25 years old) were recruited and completed an anamnestic evaluation and the following s

Multiple traumatic experiences, post-traumatic stress disorder and offending behaviour in female prisoners.

BACKGROUND: Although it is well established that prisoners commonly have histories of childhood trauma, little is known about mediators between exposure to trauma and criminal behaviour. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesised that the experience of trauma in adulthood, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and emotional dysregulation would mediate the relationship between childhood traumatic events and later criminal behaviour. METHODS: Eighty-nine female prisoners were interviewed using standardised scales, in a cross-sectional study design. History of traumatic events, DSM-5 PTSD and emotional regula

White Matter Abnormalities in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Following a Specific Traumatic Event.

Studies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are complicated by wide variability in the intensity and duration of prior stressors in patient participants, secondary effects of chronic psychiatric illness, and a variable history of treatment with psychiatric medications. In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, patient samples have often been small, and they were not often compared to similarly stressed patients without PTSD in order to control for general stress effects. Findings from these studies have been inconsistent. The present study investigated whole-brain microstructural altera

Coping style and post-traumatic stress disorder following severe traumatic brain injury.

There is increasing evidence that a proportion of severe traumatically brain injured (TBI) patients do suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of PTSD following severe TBI in a sample of 96 patients who sustained a severe TBI, of whom 27% satisfied diagnostic criteria for PTSD. The Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Interview, the Coping Style Questionnaire, and the Functional Assessment Measure was administered to these patients 6 months after hospital discharge. Avoidant coping style, behavioural coping style, and a history of prior u

[Risk Factors for Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Interpreters with Personal Trauma Experience].

BACKGROUND: Interpreters play a crucial role in the care of refugees. However, little attention has been paid to the mental health of interpreters. Despite increased levels of secondary traumatic stress (STS) and increased prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among interpreters in the refugee context, there has been little research on risk factors for STS and PTSD in this population. The aim of this study was to investigate potential risk factors for STS and PTSD symptom severity. METHODS: A Germany-wide online survey was conducted among interpreters for refugees in 2019. Only

Early pharmacological interventions for prevention of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in individuals experiencing acute traumatic stress symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Acute traumatic stress symptoms may develop in people who have been exposed to a traumatic event. Although they are usually self-limiting in time, some people develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a severe and debilitating condition. Pharmacological interventions have been proposed for acute symptoms to act as an indicated prevention measure for PTSD development. As many individuals will spontaneously remit, these interventions should balance efficacy and tolerability. OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and acceptability of early pharmacological interventions for preventi

Post-traumatic stress symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder, and post-traumatic growth among cancer survivors: a systematic scoping review of interventions.

The detrimental effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the benefits of Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) are well established for cancer survivors. Increased cancer survival rates necessitate an understanding of how these two paradoxical outcomes, PTSS/PTSD and PTG, are targeted through interventions. This systematic scoping review aims to (a) examine existing evidence on interventions targeting PTSS/PTSD and/or PTG among cancer survivors and (b) identify knowledge gaps to inform future research. Following the six steps of a scoping review, 76

Predictive models of post-traumatic stress disorder, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety in children and adolescents following a single-event trauma.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the power of theory-derived models to account for the development of PTSD, Complex PTSD (CPTSD), depression, and anxiety in children and adolescents who had experienced a single-event trauma. METHODS: Children (n = 234, aged 8-17 years) recruited from local Emergency Departments were assessed at two and nine weeks post-trauma. Data obtained from self-report questionnaires completed by the child, telephone interviews with parents, and hospital data were used to develop four predictive models of risk factors for PTSD, CPTSD, depression, and Generalized Anxiety Di

Transdiagnostic neural correlates of post-traumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury.

Post-traumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury are highly comorbid and share overlapping cognitive and affective symptoms linked to frontolimbic circuitry. However, it remains unclear whether symptom severity reflects shared neural mechanisms across diagnoses or whether mild traumatic brain injury modifies these relationships. We used functional MRI to examine transdiagnostic associations between brain activity, functional connectivity and symptom burden in 109 combat veterans. Because symptom measures were highly intercorrelated, analyses were interpreted within a symptom-dime

Frequency and impact of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic life events in patients with migraine.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been proposed as a risk factor for chronification of migraine. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of PTSD and traumatic life events (TE) in patients with episodic (EM) and chronic migraine (CM) and their impact on clinical parameters, other comorbidities, and migraine biomarkers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with EM and CM according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders (third edition; beta version) were recruited at a headache unit and a primary care centre. We used questionnaires validated for

A comparison of the functional connectome in mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) often co-occur in the context of threat to one's life. These conditions also have an overlapping symptomatology and include symptoms of anxiety, poor concentration and memory problems. A major challenge has been articulating the underlying neurobiology of these overlapping conditions. The primary aim of this study was to compare intrinsic functional connectivity between mTBI (without PTSD) and PTSD (without mTBI). The study included functional MRI data from 176 participants: 42 participants with mTBI, 67 with PTSD and

Amyloid pathology fingerprint differentiates post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are risk factors for early onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may accelerate the progression rate of AD pathology. As amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques are a hallmark of AD pathology, we hypothesized that TBI and PTSD might increase Aβ accumulation in the brain. METHODS: We examined PET and neuropsychological data from Vietnam War veterans compiled by the US Department of Defense Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, to examine the spatial distribution of Aβ in male veterans' who had experienced a TBI and/o

The Evolution of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder following Moderate-to-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Increasing evidence indicates that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop following traumatic brain injury (TBI), despite most patients having no conscious memory of their accident. This prospective study examined the frequency, timing of onset, symptom profile, and trajectory of PTSD and its psychiatric comorbidities during the first 4 years following moderate-to-severe TBI. Participants were 85 individuals (78.8% male) with moderate or severe TBI recruited following admission to acute rehabilitation between 2005 and 2010. Using the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and

Traumatic events and post-traumatic stress disorder in the community: prevalence, risk factors and comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: Lifetime and 12-month prevalence of traumatic events and DSM-IV post-traumatic stress disorder as well as risk factors and comorbidity patterns were investigated in a representative community sample (n = 3021, aged 14-24 years). METHOD: Traumatic events and PTSD were assessed with the Munich Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). RESULTS: Although 26% of male subjects and 17.7% of female subjects reported at least one traumatic event, only a few qualified for a full PTSD diagnosis (1% of males and 2.2% of females). Traumatic events and PTSD were strongly associated w

Traumatic events and post-traumatic stress disorder in cocaine users entering private treatment.

We investigated traumatic events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and psychiatric comorbidity in 450 men and women entering private, hospital-based treatments for cocaine dependence. Overall prevalence of event exposure was the same for women and men; however, women were approximately five times more likely than men to be diagnosed with lifetime and current PTSD. Women experienced more PTSD than men even when exposed to the same type of event. In most subjects with PTSD, onset of the disorder preceded onset of cocaine dependence. Subjects with PTSD were more likely than those without PT

Post-traumatic stress disorder and related disorders in elite athletes: a narrative review.

This narrative review examines post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma- and stressor-related mental health disorders in elite athletes. Elite athletes may experience these disorders at higher rates than the general population owing to disproportionate exposure to traumas and stressors, which can be experienced at individual and collective levels. These disorders can be difficult to detect due to complex symptom presentations and coping strategies that may mask symptoms. They can have both psychological and somatic components, and this dual nature has significant relevance for el
