We report a patient with disseminated strongyloidiasis who was being treated with steroids for cerebral edema caused by brain metastases from urinary bladder carcinoma. He had extensive purpura involving the abdomen, arms, and thighs. A skin biopsy specimen showed numerous larvae of Strongyloides stercoralis. Subsequently, rhabdoid larvae of S. stercoralis were isolated in the stool and the sputum. The patient died 2 days later despite thiabendazole therapy.

Peripheral lymphocytes from 16 patients with chronic uncomplicated strongyloidiasis and 15 non-infected controls were stimulated in vitro with Strongyloides stercoralis larval antigens, other non-parasite antigens and the T cell mitogen phytohemagglutinin (PHA). In the presence of autologous plasma the patients' responses to Strongyloides antigens were similar to those of controls. When lymphocytes from nine patients were cultured in the presence of normal human serum, responses to parasite antigens were enhanced, while responses to other antigens and to PHA were unaffected. Lymphoproliferativ…

The association of severe strongyloidiasis and hypogammaglobulinaemia in one patient is described. Severe strongyloidiasis was observed twice (March 1971 and June 1974), and the Strongyloides stercoralis infestation probably lasted for at least 58 months (from March 1971 to December 1975), in spite of successive thiabendazole courses of treatment. Immunological studies performed disclosed severe, steady hypogammaglobulinaemia but no abnormality in cell-mediated immunity. The respiratory infections also seen during the follow-up were ascribable more to humoral immunity impairment than to cell-m…

We report a case of lung abscess associated with pulmonary strongyloidiasis which occurred in an asthmatic patient three years after migrating to Australia from Burma where strongyloidiasis is endemic. Thiabendazole was effective in eradicating the Strongyloides infection.

About one case of massive strongyloidosis becoming out of any immunosuppressive treatment and without travel out of France in a 40 year-old-woman, the authors study the different possibilities of contamination and set the problem of a drug-resistance to Thiabendazole.

Strongyloidiasis is considered one of the most serious parasitic infections globally, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease's public health significance is substantial, as the infection can remain dormant for decades in the host and may be activated as hyperinfection after immunity dysregulation caused by immunosuppression. Strongyloides stercoralis infection is prevalent in tropical regions, whereas cases are usually reported sporadically in non-tropical countries and are estimated to cause asymptomatic chronic infection in 600 million people worldwide. Strongyloidiasis …

Strongyloides stercoralis is a parasite that has the ability to reproduce within humans, which explains its persistence for many years. It lives in the duodenum and ileum, between the enterocytes, and opens up to the intestinal lumen. Historically it is associated with tropical and subtropical rural areas, but its development has been seen in microclimates that favour the biological cycle. In Argentina, the diagnosis in the Province of Buenos Aires is not common, being more common in northern Argentina. Due to a common disease with atypical presentation, we present the case of a male, 25-year-

Strongyloides stercoralis infection remains a major veterinary and public health challenge globally. This chronic and potentially lifelong disease has fatal outcomes in immunosuppressed people and dogs. Currently, the role of dogs in the transmission cycle of human strongyloidiasis remains enigmatic. While zoonotic transmission to humans from companion animals has been proposed, this has not been confirmed. Modern molecular methods have allowed greater opportunity to explore the genotypes of S. stercoralis in dogs and humans. Work thus far has demonstrated that at least two distinct lineages e…

Strongyloidiasis, a neglected helminthiasis, is more prevalent in tropical/subtropical areas. However, sporadic autochthonous cases have been described around the Mediterranean coast. We performed a retrospective descriptive study in a referral Spanish Center for Pediatric Tropical diseases. All patients below 18 years of age diagnosed with probable strongyloidiasis between January 2014 and December 2019, born in Spain and with no history of travel abroad, were included. Epidemiological, clinical, and follow-up data were recorded, as well as all microbiology results. Five children met the incl…

Strongyloidiasis is a parasitic infection distributed worldwide, with an estimated 614 million people infected. Strongyloidiasis usually presents asymptomatically or with aspecific and mild clinical symptoms, mainly cutaneous, respiratory, or gastrointestinal. Disseminated disease and hyperinfection syndrome are the most serious complications, have a high mortality rate, usually occur in immunosuppressed patients, and are particularly associated with the use of corticosteroids. Strongyloidiasis is the most neglected of the neglected diseases, and its occurrence in pregnancy has been neglected …

OBJECTIVE: To analyse clinical and epidemiological characteristics of immigrant patients diagnosed with strongyloidiasis in our area.
METHODS: An analyse was performed on patients with strongyloidiasis seen in the Tropical Medicine Unit of the "Hospital de Poniente" in Almeria (Spain), from April 2004 to May 2012.
RESULTS: A total of 320 patients were diagnosed with Strongyloides stercoralis infection, and 284 out of 314 patients (90.4%) had a positive specific serology. Forty-two percent of the patients reported symptoms and 45% had eosinophilia. The serological results were monitored in so…
