In this study, we developed a simple carbonized poly-melamine-formaldehyde sponge (CMF) acting as an adsorbent for adsorbing perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) from the waste poly-melamine-formaldehyde (MF) sponge. The structure of the title complex, [Mg(H(2)O)(6)](C(10)H(15)O(4)S)(2), consists of regular octa-hedral [Mg(H(2)O)(6)](2+) cations and d-camphor-10-sulfonate anions. A three-dimensional supra-molecular architecture is formed via hydrogen-bond inter-actions [O-H⋯O = 2.723 (2)-2.833 (2) Å] to give alternating layers of [Mg(H(2)O)(6)](2+) cations and d-camphor-10-sulfonate anions. Previous studies have shown that proteasome inhibitors are novel agents for chemotherapy of human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness. In this study, five peptide trileucine methyl vinyl sulfones with different N-terminal substituents were tested for their trypanocidal activities in vitro using culture-adapted bloodstream forms of Trypanosoma brucei. Monitoring data were collected in a pilot-scale municipal activated sludge plant to assess the fate of the C12-homologue of linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS-C12). The pilot-plant was operated at influent LAS-C12 concentrations between 2 and 12 mg l(-1) and at sludge retention times of 10 and 27 days. Effluent and waste sludge concentrations varied between 5 and 10 microg l(-1) and between 37 and 69 microg g(-1) VSS, respectively. To investigate the relationship between sulfon arotinoid biotransformation and teratogenic activity, the potency of the ethyl (Ro 15-1570) and methyl (Ro 14-9706) arotinoid sulfones and their in vivo disposition in pregnant hamsters were studied. S-sulfonate levels were measured in the nasal lavage (NAL) fluid of humans exposed to sulfur dioxide as a potential biological marker of exposure. These levels were determined by treating NAL fluid protein with cyanide to cleave the S-S linkage and release the sulfite. The cyanolytically released sulfite was measured by ion chromatography.
