A method to determine the concentration of atmospheric pollutant, sulfur dioxide, was studied by fluorophotometric method. The composition and concentration of reaction solution were optimized. This method can be developed to be a fibre optic fluorometric method for routine monitoring.

Scabies is one of the most important prevalent contagious disease caused by itch mite "Sarcoptes scabiei." Many effective scabiecides have been suggested and tried. They differ in their side effects since they are applied on diseased skin sometimes all over the body. Chemolithoautotrophic bacteria were enriched from mine water at incubation temperatures ranging from 4 to 46 degrees C, using elemental sulfur as a substrate in acid mineral salts media. Thiobacillus-type bacteria were successfully enriched for at all test temperatures except 46 degrees C. Changes in pH (-dpH/dt) were used to estimate the rate constants for the enrichment cultures. The rate constants yielded a linear Arrhenius plot, an activation energy of 65 kJ/mol, and a temperature coefficient (Q(10)) of 2.1 for the 4 to 37 degrees C temperature interval.

The purpose of this study was to describe for asthmatic subjects the distribution of individual bronchial sensitivity to sulfur dioxide (SO2). Subjects were nonsmoking male asthmatics (n = 27) who were sensitive to inhaled methacholine. None of the subjects used corticosteroids or cromolyn sodium. Oral medications were withheld for 48 hr, inhaled medications for 12 hr prior to all testing. A tube type diffusion dosimeter was developed for sulfur dioxide. The dosimeter can be fabricated by the user from inexpensive, easily available materials. The design incorporates a tube diffusion element, liquid absorption reservoir and a porous plastic mass transfer element. Sulfur trioxide in the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine is removed and concentrated by absorption in a solution of 80% isopropyl alcohol, which quantitatively absorbs it and inhibits the oxidation of any sulfur dioxide which may be absorbed. The absorbed sulfur trioxide (sulfuric acid) is determined by an absorption titration by using barium chloride as the titrant and thorin as the indicator. The sulfur dioxide content of the exhaust is measured continuously by means of a DuPont Model 411 ultraviolet photoanalyzer.
