Utility of two-view vs. three-view abdominal radiography in canines presenting with acute abdominal signs.

There are clear differences in the normal radiographic appearance of the abdominal organs between a left lateral vs. a right lateral view. While a few veterinary academic institutions have transitioned to a three-view abdominal radiographic study protocol, obtaining only two views of the canine abdomen remains the current standard in veterinary medicine. In this combined retrospective and prospective, case-controlled study, 48 canine patients presenting with signs of acute abdomen were recruited. Four board-certified veterinary radiologists and four general practice veterinarians with greater

Comparison of the effect of isopropyl alcohol and chlorhexidine solution rinses on body temperature of female cats undergoing sterilization surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Isopropyl alcohol 70% as a rinse agent for chlorhexidine scrub has been shown to decrease body temperature more quickly than chlorhexidine solution in mice prepared aseptically prior to surgery. For this reason, some high-quality, high-volume (HQHV) surgical sterilization clinics use chlorhexidine solution rather than alcohol. We sought to determine if temperature upon entry to recovery, heat loss per kg and rate of temperature decline during surgery were different between cats rinsed with chlorhexidine solution vs 70% isopropyl alcohol following surgical scrub, and if there were s

Reconstruction of deep and perforating corneal defects in dogs-A review (Part I/III): Autogenous ocular tissues, donor tissues, and corneal clarity scoring.

Corneal reconstruction is a key part of veterinary ophthalmic practice and numerous reconstructive techniques have been described for use in small animals in the peer-reviewed veterinary literature written in English. Despite the evidence accrued over the last six decades in over 40 clinical articles and numerous other publications on ocular surface health, several key areas require further study. The comparison between studies is difficult due to elements that go beyond common factors, such as the indication for surgery, the reconstructive technique preferred by the surgeon or the availabilit

Current Antimicrobial Use in Horses Undergoing Exploratory Celiotomy: A Survey of Board-Certified Equine Specialists.

In the past decade, there has been a considerable increase in the recognition of antimicrobial resistance in equine practice. The objective of this study was to survey the current clinical use of antimicrobials for a commonly performed surgical procedure (exploratory celiotomy) with the goal of understanding how recent literature and changes in microbial resistance patterns may have impacted antimicrobial selection practices. An electronic survey was distributed to veterinary professionals within the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and the American College of Veterinar

Using Artificial Intelligence to Predict Survivability Likelihood and Need for Surgery in Horses Presented With Acute Abdomen (Colic).

Artificial intelligence and machine learning have promising applications in several medical fields of diagnosis, imaging, and laboratory testing procedures. However, the use of this technology in the veterinary medicine field is lagging behind, and there are many areas where it could be used with potentially successful outcomes and results. In this study, two critical predictions were explored in horses presented with acute abdomen (colic) using this technology. Those were the need for surgical intervention and survivability likelihood of affected horses based on clinical data (history, clinic

Surgical approach to a biliary tract cyst in an elderly cat.

Choledochal cyst or biliary tract cyst is a pathological condition characterized by abnormal dilation of the hepatobiliary system. In veterinary medicine, case descriptions and histological characterizations of this biliary malformation are scarce, requiring reliance on data from human medicine. A presumptive diagnosis typically involves imaging studies, with histopathological examination required for confirmation. Treatment often involves surgical intervention to remove the cyst and restore normal biliary function. A 15-year-old mixed-breed domestic female cat presented with vomiting and anor

Emphysematous Cystitis and Pneumoperitoneum in a Dog with Escherichia coli Urinary Tract Infection and Hyperadrenocorticism.

A 9 yr old male neutered Staffordshire bull terrier with a history of poorly controlled hyperadrenocorticism, urinary tract infections, and emphysematous cystitis (EC) was presented to a veterinary referral teaching hospital for vomiting. Abdominal radiographs revealed EC and a pneumoperitoneum. The urinary bladder was found to be intact based on ultrasound and a pre- and postiohexol contrast computed tomography study with retrograde contrast cystogram. Urine culture confirmed the presence of a recurrent Escherichia coli urinary tract infection. The patient was managed medically, primarily as

Open-heart surgery using Del-Nido cardioplegia in two dogs: partial atrioventricular septal defect and mitral repair.

Del-Nido cardioplegia (DNc) is a single-dose cardioplegia that is widely used in human medicine because of its long duration. In this report, we describe two cases of open-heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) using DNc. One dog was diagnosed with partial atrioventricular septal defect, and the other dog was diagnosed with myxomatous mitral valve disease stage D. Both dogs were treated with open-heart surgery with DNc to induce temporary cardiac arrest. No complications from DNc were observed, and the patients were discharged. Veterinary heart surgeons should consider DNc as an optio

Anatomical Validation and Technical Feasibility of Biportal Endoscopic Spinal Surgery Including Technical Notes in a Cadaveric Canine Thoracic Intervertebral Disc Disease Model.

Biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS) is a minimally invasive technique that is widely used in human spinal procedures; however, its standardized methodology and anatomical adaptation for veterinary applications have not yet been established. This study aimed to develop a reproducible experimental framework for performing BESS in dogs and evaluate its technical feasibility. A thoracic intervertebral disc disease model was created by injecting a fluorescently dyed artificial disc material containing methylene blue into the T12-13 intervertebral space of 13 medium-sized canine cadavers. Surgical repair of Salter-Harris type II fracture of the distal humerus: short and long-term outcomes in a case series of three dogs and one cat.

CASE HISTORIES: Three dogs and one cat sustained forelimb trauma and were presented to a university veterinary clinic (Liège, Belgium) and a private veterinary hospital (Beacouzé, France). All four animals were referred for surgery. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Two dogs and the cat were ambulatory on admission but unable to bear weight on the affected limb. One dog was non-ambulatory and lacked voluntary movement and sensation in one forelimb. Salter-Harris type II fractures of the distal humerus were diagnosed by radiography in all cases; avulsion of the brachial plexus and pelvic fractures were also

Two cases of bloodstream infections associated with opportunistic bacterial species (Enterococcus hirae and Enterobacter xiangfangensis) in companion animals.

BACKGROUND: Bloodstream infections are a matter of concern in small animal veterinary practice. Few reports are avaiable, especially regarding the role of opportunistic bacteria in becoming infectious. This report aims to add to the current veterinary literature on two opportunistic bacterial species (Enterococcus hirae and Enterobacter xiangfangensis) associated with bloodstream infections in small animals admitted to the Bologna University Veterinary Hospital. CASE PRESENTATION: In the first case, a 15-year-old, immunocompromised, cardiopathic dog was admitted to the hospital for anorexia a

Investigating Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria in Canine Skin Infections at a Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Identifying multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in veterinary hospitals is crucial for treatment and public health risk mitigation. This study assessed the hospital prevalence of MDR isolates from canine bacterial skin infections, compared prevalence across services and infection types, and identified the most common MDR organisms. Data from hospital records and aerobic skin cultures from August 2021 to November 2024 were reviewed and analyzed. The dataset included 438 cultures from 416 patients and 647 bacterial isolates, and 196 MDR bacteria yielded from 182 samples. The hospital multidrug re

Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on antimicrobial use in companion animals in an academic veterinary hospital in North Carolina.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial pathogens reduces the effectiveness of these drugs in both human and veterinary medicine, making judicious antimicrobial use (AMU) an important strategy for its control. The COVID-19 pandemic modified operations in both human and veterinary healthcare delivery, potentially impacting AMU. The goal of this research is to quantify how antimicrobial drug prescribing practices for companion animals in an academic veterinary hospital changed during the pandemic. A retrospective study was performed using prescribing data for dogs and cats collected from the

Conditions of the lumbosacral spinal cord and cauda equina.

Lumbosacral conditions are now recognized as compromising a significant percentage of problems for dogs and cats with rear limb abnormalities. Diagnosis is based on logically ruling out the more common maladies and then performing specific diagnostic procedures that definitively show the lesion(s).

Intraoperative problems associated with intervertebral disc disease.

Intervertebral disc disease in the dog is a common problem in veterinary medicine. The clinician must understand the pathophysiology of disc extrusions so the owner can be informed properly when medical versus surgical treatment is indicated. Intervertebral disc surgery requires the same preoperative considerations as any other surgery would: knowledge of regional anatomy, proper equipment, and good surgical techniques and tissue handling. The spinal cord is an unforgiving structure, forcing the surgeon to understand and to avoid intraoperative complications. Some complications are inevitable.

Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens co-infection in a microfilaremic dog from Negotin, Eastern Serbia: Unusual localization of adult Dirofilaia repens in an abdominal hernia sac.

Cardiopulmonary and subcutaneous dirofilariosis, caused by the nematodes Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens, are vector-borne diseases of growing concern in both veterinary and human medicine. While typically found in predilection sites, atypical localizations have been documented for both species. The first case of adult D. repens found in a dog's abdominal hernia sac in Eastern Serbia is reported in this study. A 7-year-old dog was brought to a veterinary clinic in Negotin, Serbia with lateral abdominal swelling. During hernia repair surgery, three filiform nematodes were discovered
