[Morphological changes in the pineal body of domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) depending on light].

The cerebral epiphysis of twelve gilts, aged 6.5 months, was histologically, histochemically, and histometrically tested, after the animals had been kept permanently under artificial light, 100 lux, or in darkness, interrupted twice a day by two hours of lighting, over ten weeks altogether. The parenchymal cells of the epiphyses of the animals kept in darkness changed clearly from those of the other group with constant exposure to light. Changes in the darkness animals included significant enlargement of the cell nuclear volume by 33 per cent, increase in nucleoli count as well as increases of

Evaluation of a Commercial ELISA for the Detection of Antibodies to Sarcoptes scabiei in Wild Boar (Sus scrofa).

Sarcoptic mange occurs in free-ranging wild boar (Sus scrofa) but has been poorly described in this species. We evaluated the performance of a commercial indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for serodiagnosis of sarcoptic mange in domestic swine when applied to wild boar sera. We tested 96 sera from wild boar in populations without mange history ("truly noninfected") collected in Switzerland between December 2012 and February 2014, and 141 sera from free-ranging wild boar presenting mange-like lesions, including 50 live animals captured and sampled multiple times in France betwee…

The impact of occlusal function on structural adaptation in alveolar bone of the growing pig, Sus Scrofa.

OBJECTIVES: this study investigated the effects of growth and tooth loading on the structural adaptation of the developing alveolar bone adjacent to the tooth root as the tooth erupted into function. Growth and occlusal function were expected to lead to increased alveolar bone density. Meanwhile, the supporting alveolar bone was expected to develop a dominant trabecular orientation (anisotropy) only after occlusal loading. DESIGN: minipigs with erupting and occluding mandibular first molars (M(1)'s) were used to study the effects of growth and occlusal function on developing alveolar bone str

Identification and functional analysis of hub genes involved in deoxynivalenol-induced enterotoxicity in porcine (Sus scrofa).

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a type of mycotoxin commonly found in food and animal feed. When consumed, it can have harmful effects on the intestine. The porcine digestive system is physiologically similar to that of humans, making pigs a suitable model for studying DON-induced enterotoxicity. However, the exact ways DON causes intestinal damage in pigs still need to be fully understood. To address this knowledge gap, this study aimed to identify hub genes associated with enterotoxicity caused by DON exposure. Transcriptomic datasets from porcine jejunal explants exposed to DON were extensively ana

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in invasive wild boars (Sus scrofa) and hunting dogs from Brazil.

The wild boar, an impactful invasive species in Brazil, is subject to population control activities, which often include the use of hunting dogs. Hunters commonly consume wild boar meat, which is also used to feed their dogs, posing a risk of Toxoplasma gondii infection for humans and both T. gondii and Neospora caninum for dogs. The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of infection in wild boars (n = 127) and hunting dogs (n = 73) from São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, and Paraná states. We employed histopathological, serological (indirect fluorescent antibody test), and molecular techniques

Cardiovascular effects of intravenous vatinoxan in wild boars (Sus scrofa) anaesthetised with intramuscular medetomidine-tiletamine-zolazepam.

BACKGROUND: The potent sedative medetomidine is a commonly used adjunct for the immobilisation of non-domestic mammals. However, its use is associated with pronounced cardiovascular side effects, such as bradycardia, vasoconstriction and decreased cardiac output. We investigated the effects of the peripherally-acting alpha-2-adrenoceptor antagonist vatinoxan on cardiovascular properties in medetomidine-tiletamine-zolazepam anaesthetised wild boar (Sus scrofa). METHODS: Twelve wild boars, anaesthetised twice with medetomidine (0.1 mg/kg) and tiletamine/zolazepam (2.5 mg/kg) IM in a randomised,…

Postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) estimation from the microbiome of sus scrofa bone in a freshwater lake.

While many studies have developed microbial succession-based models for the prediction of postmortem interval (PMI) in terrestrial systems, similar well-replicated long-term decomposition studies are lacking for aquatic systems. Therefore, this study sought to identify temporal changes in bacterial community structure associated with porcine skeletal remains (n = 198) for an extended period in a fresh water lake. Every ca. 250 ADD, one cage, containing 5 ribs and 5 scapulae, was removed from the lake for a total of nineteen collections. Water was also sampled at each interval. Variable region

Mulberry Heart Disease and Hepatosis Dietetica in Farm Pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) in a Research Setting.

Perioperative complications and deaths occurred while developing a novel surgical model of pediatric kyphosis in 10 to 12 kg male farm-raised Yorkshire piglets. All piglets appeared clinically normal preoperatively. Intraoperative complications included tachycardia, respiratory acidosis, and death. Postoperatively, clinical signs included posterior paresis, head pressing, prolonged anesthetic recovery, difficulty rising, and sudden death. Necropsies were performed on all piglets. Some morbidity and mortality were accurately attributed to the spinal surgery. However, the index piglet for this r

Contamination of wild boars' (Sus scrofa) muscles with tetracycline antibiotic from oral-delivered rabies vaccine baits.

Tetracycline (TC) is used as a biomarker for rabies vaccine bait intended for foxes. However, there is a high probability of intake of the vaccine by other species living in the forest ecosystem, including wild boars (Sus scrofa), and TC residues can occur in the animals' tissues. In this study, muscle samples from 144 animals were tested for the presence of TC, collected after rabies vaccine distribution. For the quantitative analysis of TC and its 4-epi form, a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was developed. The results of this study show that TC was found in …
