This mini-review describes recent epidemiological trends in cysticercosis and taeniasis in Japan. Some of the topics discussed herein were presented at the first symposium on "Current perspectives of Taenia asiatica researches", that was held in Osong in Chungbuk Province, South Korea, in October 2011 and organized by Prof. K. S. Eom, Chungbuk National University School of Medicine. To better understand the trends in the occurrence of cysticercosis and taeniasis in Japan, clinical cases reported in 2005 have been updated. In addition, the current status of Taenia asiatica infections successive…

History and current status of human taeniasis in the Republic of Korea, due to Taenia solium, Taenia asiatica, and Taenia saginata, are briefly reviewed. Until the 1980s, human taeniasis had been quite common in various localities of Korea. A study from 1924 reported 12.0% egg prevalence in fecal examinations. Thereafter, the prevalence of Taenia spp. ranged from 3% to 14% depending on the time and locality. Jeju-do, where pigs were reared in a conventional way, was the highest endemic area of taeniasis. An analysis of internal transcribed spacer 2 and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 gene…

Human cysticercosis, caused by accidental ingestion of eggs of Taenia solium, is one of the most pathogenic helminthiases and is listed among the 17 WHO Neglected Tropical Diseases. Controlling the life-cycle of T. solium between humans and pigs is essential for eradication of cysticercosis. One difficulty for the accurate detection and identification of T. solium species is the possible co-existence of two other human Taenia tapeworms (T. saginata and T. asiatica, which do not cause cysticercosis in humans). Several key issues for taeniasis/cysticercosis (T/C) evidence-based epidemiology and …

Pig production has increased significantly worldwide in recent years. Small-scale pig husbandry has become a popular source of income in rur … n and control swine cysticercosis. WHO invites all endemic countries to recognize the importance of taeniasis/cysticercosis control and to collect epidemiological data and to adopt policies and strategies for its control.

A 61-year-old eutrophic male was diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency and megaloblastic anemia. A modified Schilling test suggested intestinal malabsorption unrelated to intrinsic factor deficiency. Subsequent colonoscopy revealed the presence of a Taenia tapeworm. The anemia resolved within days under therapy with niclosamide and temporary vitamin B12 supplements. The present case suggests that, in addition to other well-known parasitic agents, e.g., Diphyllobothrium latum and Giardia lamblia, Taenia infestation can also be a cause of intestinal vitamin B12 malabsorption.

Specific IgG and IgA antibodies against adult Taenia pisiformis excretory/secretory antigen were detected in sera and saliva by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in experimentally infected dogs. IgG titres in serum and IgA in saliva corresponded with infection status, while serum IgA levels closely reflected faecal egg counts. The salivary IgA response was particularly raised and could have significant immunodiagnostic use for taeniasis in dogs.

The Balinese always serve "lawar" at traditional ceremonies. It consists of half raw pork mixed with coconut and vegetables. In Bali, not all families have toilets in their houses and their animals are usually reared around the house area. The prevalence of taeniasis in humans in Bali varied from 0.8% to 23% and most worms recovered from patients were T. saginata (Sutisna, 1989). Although pork was consumed more often than beef, the prevalence of cysticercosis in pigs and cattle was always low. Suweta et al (1978) reported a prevalence rate of 0.15% for cysticercosis in pigs. It has been report…

The present field trial attempts to test the efficacy of niclosamide by a modified chemotherapeutic schedule to collect the purged stool samples consecutively to search expelled worms. Nineteen patients with taeniasis were given 1 gm of niclosmaide with 3 gm sodium bicarbonate twice at 30-minute interval, then purgative was administered. The patients were allowed only fluid meal or fruit juice before treatment. In all, 33 worms (11 with scolex, 22 without), 17 strobilae and 247 segments were collected from consecutive purged stools. The scolex recovery rate was 33%. After taking the purgative,…

One hundred and twenty-four persons, nearly the entire population of a rural village in Hidalgo State, were screened for intestinal parasites and clinical or serologic (ELISA) evidence of Taenia solium cysticercosis. Heads of households were questioned about dietary and other practices that might lead to pork tapeworm transmission, and soil samples were examined for helminth eggs. Twenty-five percent of local pigs had cysticerci visible by examination of the undersurface of their tongues. Four persons passed taeniid eggs, 7 were seropositive, and 10 gave medical histories suggestive of neurody

Human taeniasis, caused by Taenia tapeworms, is a global parasitic disease with significant implications for public health and food safety. These tapeworms can grow to considerable sizes and potentially impact the microecology of the host gut. Despite their importance, the effects of Taenia infection on host gut microbiota haven't been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the gut microbiome in patients infected with Taenia asiatica (n = 87) compared to healthy controls (n = 79) in the Dali cohort, China. We also performed a longitudinal assessment …
