We conducted a multistage genome-wide association study (GWAS) of tanning response after exposure to sunlight in over 9,000 men and women of European ancestry who live in the United States. Postmortem tanning, previously referred to as either postmortem suntan or postmortem sunburn, presents as hyperpigmentation of sun-exposed uncovered skin. It most commonly occurs in decedents who remain in an environment in which the ambient temperature is either warm or hot; the areas of the corpse that are exposed to the sun develop hyperpigmentation. Psoralen combined with long-wave ultraviolt radiation (UV-A) has become a standard method of psoriasis treatment. A well-known and often appreciated 'side-effect' is the hyperpigmentation caused by this treatment. Three patients demonstrating a novel cause of severe skin loss, 'psoralen burn', are presented. The relationship among minimal erythema dose (MED), minimal delayed tanning dose (MDTD), and skin color was examined in 16 healthy volunteers using three different spectra. Are darker-skinned workers discriminated against in the labor market? Studies using survey data have shown that darker skin tone is associated with increased labor market disadvantages.
