[Temporary tattooing with henna induces contact allergy to textile dyes].

A woman developed widespread contact dermatitis after temporary tattooing with henna, caused by paraphenylenediamine (PPD) which had been added to the henna as an enhancer. The patient recovered after treatment; a week later an acute generalized rebound occurred after she wore dark clothing (black chador). Patch tests revealed type-IV allergy to PPD, along with multiple sensitisations to other textile dyes (disperse orange 3, para-aminoazobenzole, Bismark brown R). Temporary henna tattoos are not always harmless holiday souvenirs. The addition of color enhancers such as PPD into henna may lead

[Allergic reactions and hypopigmentation due to temporary tattooing with henna].

Skin tattooing with henna seems a safe alternative to permanent skin tattooing. Contact dermatitis due to henna is rare. Most of the reactions are due to additives, especially paraphenylenediamine, which is added to speed up the process of skin dyeing and to give a darker brown to black colour ('black' henna) instead of the otherwise reddish brown henna colour. Paraphenylenediamine is a well-known strong sensitizer, particularly due to its use as a hair dye. Three patients, two boys aged 8 and 10 years and a 30-year-old woman, developed allergic contact dermatitis after skin painting, after wh

Prevalence of tattooing and body piercing in the Australian community.

Tattooing and body piercing are now worldwide fashion crazes. The health risks associated with these procedures are as yet unclear. This article examines the prevalence of body decoration and the associated health risks within the Australian population using a random sample survey of individuals aged 14 years and over, collected between June and September 1998 (n = 10,030). The results show that one in 10 people have had a tattoo at some point in their lives and 8 per cent some form of body piercing, excluding ear piercing. Men are more likely than women to report tattooing, while females are

[Delayed type allergic reaction to red azo dye in tattooing].

Allergic reactions in tattoos are comparatively rare. In most cases the reactions are caused by different red pigments. While in the past these reactions have been ascribed to mercury salts (cinnebar) and cadmium sulphide, now synthetic inorganic azo dyes have also been found to be responsible for such reactions. A 42-year-old man presented with an allergic reaction in the red parts of his tattoos. Histologically a chronic granulomatous, partly fibrous inflammation with transfollicular elimination of pigment granules was found. Spontaneous regression in a part of the inflammatory reaction was

Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Tattoo: A Man With a Tattoo-Associated Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Review of Benign Tumors, Lymphoid Conditions, and Malignant Neoplasms Occurring Within a Tattoo.

Tattoos, a common form of body adornment, have been associated with numerous cutaneous complications. These include not only benign neoplasms and malignant tumors but also lymphoid conditions occurring within the tattoo. Tattoo-associated dermatomyofibroma, epidermoid inclusion cyst, hemangioma, lipoma, milia, and pilomatricoma are benign lesions that have each only been described in one individual. However, there are only a few reports of persons with either dermatofibroma or seborrheic keratoses within their tattoo; also, benign nevi within a tattoo may be more common than the number of repo

Disseminated cutaneous sarcoidosis triggered by eyebrow tattoo: a case report highlighting lesions beyond tattooed sites.

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease commonly involving the lungs and lymph nodes, but it may also affect the skin. Tattoos have been recognized as potential triggers for cutaneous sarcoid lesions. We report a case of a 46-year-old female who developed sarcoidosis presenting as asymptomatic papules and plaques initially confined to her tattooed eyebrows, followed by the appearance of similar lesions at distant non-tattooed sites, including the upper back and elbows. Histopathology confirmed cutaneous sarcoidosis, and imaging revealed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, indicating sy

Laser tattoo removal strategies: Part II: A review of the methods, techniques, and complications involved in tattoo removal.

The rising global popularity of cosmetic and corrective tattoos has concurrently led to an increased demand for their removal. While in the past, methods like surgical excision, chemical destruction, and dermabrasion were employed, lasers have emerged as a reliable and effective tool for tattoo removal. Increasing technological options and combination treatment strategies have raised the importance of understanding the various approaches to laser tattoo removal along with their respective clinical impact. This CME aims to describe the multifaceted aspects of laser tattoo removal, including the

Hypersensitivity to permanent tattoos: Literature summary and comprehensive review of patch tested tattoo patients 1997-2022.

We outline constituents of tattoo and permanent make-up ink with regard to inflammatory tattoo reactions and population-based confounders. The comprehensive review of patch-tested tattoo patients between 1997 and 2022 shows that tattoo allergy cannot be reliably diagnosed via patch testing with today's knowledge. Weak penetration and slow haptenization of pigments, unavailability of pigments as test allergens and a lack of knowledge concerning relevant epitopes hamper the diagnosis of tattoo allergy. Patch testing p-phenylenediamine and disperse (textile) dyes is not able to close this gap. Se

When Care Leaves Permanent Marks: Medical Tattooing, Necessity, and Bioethical Governance.

Medical tattooing, the application of permanent marks for clinical, rehabilitative, or identification purposes, occupies an unstable position across medical law, consumer regulation, and professional practice. This article argues that the central governance problem is not that law has never encountered irreversible interventions, but that medical tattooing combines enduring bodily alteration with continuing social visibility, informational significance, and fragmented professional responsibility. Permanence should therefore operate as a threshold for enhanced legal and bioethical scrutiny rath

Preoperative Indocyanine Green Tattooing for Robotic-Assisted Surgery in Rectal Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Preoperative identification of the site of rectal cancer surgery is crucial for ensuring accurate tumor localization and resection. Commonly employed methods include contrast-enhanced enterography and endoscopic marking techniques, such as clipping and India ink tattooing. However, India ink tattooing poses challenges, including obstruction of the surgical field, ink leakage into the abdominal cavity, and potential complications such as peritonitis and adhesive bowel obstruction. Similarly, clipping requires palpation, making minimally invasive procedures, such as laparoscopic or

Safety and reliability of tattooing colorectal neoplasms prior to laparoscopic resection.

Accurate tumor localization is critical to performing minimally invasive colorectal resection. This study reviews the safety and reliability of tattooing colorectal neoplasms prior to laparoscopic resection. We retrospectively reviewed 50 consecutive patients with colorectal neoplasms who underwent endoscopic tattooing prior to laparoscopic resection. Data were obtained from medical charts, endoscopy records, and pathology reports. No complications related to endoscopy or tattooing were incurred. Five neoplasms (10%) were in the ascending colon, five (10%) were in the transverse colon, eight (

Tattooing in reconstruction of the nipple and areola: a new method.

In order to produce the characteristic color of the nipple-areola complex and in unilateral reconstructions to match the other side, a modified tattooing method has been introduced. The quite different requirements between reconstruction and ornamental studio tattooing can only be satisfied by different techniques. For the first time, pigment particles have been suspended in a gel rather than adsorbed on an opaque mineral. Our porcine study has shown how the pigment is distributed in the dermis without penetration of the gel particles. The first 16 of the authors' 29 patients have been reviewe

Queer tattooing: archives of spatial belonging, bodily autonomy, resistance and community.

This article examines queer tattooing as both a historical and a contemporary practice of resistance, belonging and community formation. Bringing together three archives - oral history interviews and portraits of queer elders, historical medical records documenting tattooed queer women engaged in sex work at the turn of the twentieth century and a dialogue with queer tattoo artist Sara Swanson - we consider what queer tattooing reveals across generations, bodies and spaces. Our interdisciplinary approach combines archival research, oral history, artistic practice and activist perspectives to t

Systemic diseases and infections, anecdotal complications and oddities associated with tattooing.

Complications associated with tattoos are mostly of cutaneous origin. They include chiefly ink allergy, local infection, benign tumors or malignant lesions and elective localization of various dermatoses. Tattoo-related systemic diseases and infections have more rarely been described, the most common being sarcoidosis and hepatitis C. However, unusual associations have also been reported, even though they may be anecdotal or likely unrelated with the procedure.

The Applications of Medical Tattooing in the Head and Neck Region.

Medical tattooing has been used in various circumstances. In this review, the authors focus on the utilization of medical tattooing in the head and neck region as a minimally invasive alternative to corrective surgeries. It is mostly used to camouflage noticeable surgical scars on scalp, face, and perioral areas. Its use has also been described in cases of concealing depigmentation or hypopigmentation, hair loss, postirradiation telangiectasia, and congenital vascular malformation. These procedures are well-tolerated and safe. Its effects are long-lasting and satisfactory, leading to improveme

Medical tattooing, the new frontiers: a case of nail bed treatment.

The primary objective of medical tattooing is to restore part of a patient's physical integrity. Moreover, the procedure seeks to assist in psychological recovery from the physical and/or psychological consequences of disease, surgery or trauma. The method described in this brief note marks a step forward in the field of such tattooing. The treatment simulates reconstruction of the nail bed, as the nails of the big toes had previously been removed through a surgical avulsion procedure. This treatment, agreed with the physician and performed by a tattooist with proven experience in medical tatt
