BACKGROUND: Tetanus is an acute, often fatal, disease caused by an exotoxin produced by Clostridium tetani. It occurs in newborn infants born to mothers who do not have sufficient circulating antibodies to protect the infant passively, by transplacental transfer. Prevention may be possible by the vaccination of pregnant and/or non-pregnant women with tetanus toxoid, and the provision of clean delivery services. Tetanus toxoid consists of a formaldehyde-treated toxin which stimulates the production of antitoxin.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of tetanus toxoid, administered to women o

To measure the clinical effect of adding a whole cell pertussis component to diphtheria/tetanus vaccine (DT) given as a pre-school booster, … here were no significant differences between DTP and DT vaccinated children in their diphtheria and tetanus antitoxin levels. The frequency of large local reactions and systemic symptoms such as crying and a disturbed night was 2-3-fold higher in the DTP vaccinees than in the DT vaccinees. Medication was given to 44% of DTP and 23% of DT vaccinees (p = 0.006). Alth …

OBJECTIVE: To define factors associated with survival in dogs with tetanus and to evaluate the prognostic significance of an established severity classification scheme.
METHODS: Medical records of dogs with the clinical diagnosis of tetanus were retrospectively reviewed with regard to signalment, clinical signs, clinicopathological findings on admission, wound characteristics, complications, therapeutic measures, and survival to discharge. Based on the extracted data, dogs were graded according to a previously published 4-class severity scheme. Non-parametric tests were applied for comparison

OBJECTIVE: Tetanus is a severe neurologic disease caused by Clostridium tetani, resulting in spastic paralysis. Canine tetanus is associated … zole, methocarbamol, and combinations of different sedatives adapted to the patient's requirements. Tetanus antitoxin was used in 72.2% of dogs (13 of 18) without reported adverse events. The survival rate was 88.9% (16 of 18). Complications, such as hypertension, aspiration pneumonia, and laryngeal spasm occurred in 12 of 18 dogs. Median hospitalization time (8 da …

Injection drug use (IDU), specifically non-intravenous "skin-popping" of heroin, seems to provide optimal conditions for Clostridial infection and toxin production. IDU is therefore a major risk factor for wound botulism and Clostridial necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTI) and continues to be linked to cases of tetanus. Case clusters of all 3 diseases have occurred among IDUs in Western U.S. and Europe. Medical personnel who care for the IDU population must be thoroughly familiar with the clinical presentation and management of these diseases. Wound botulism presents with bulbar symptoms

BACKGROUND: Vaccination rates are frequently considered a surrogate measure of protection. To provide more accurate estimates, serum levels of antibody against tetanus were measured as part of the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), which studied a representative sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States.
METHODS: We measured tetanus antitoxin using a solid-phase enzyme immunoassay in serum samples from 10,618 persons six years of age and older who were examined during phase 1 of NHANES III in 1988 to 1991.
RESULTS: Overall,…

BACKGROUND: The administration of tetanus-diphtheria vaccine (Td, "adult" type) as booster dose every ten years, instead of tetanus toxoid, is a usual practice in the U.S., and its is being envisaged by the Spanish health authorities. In the present trial, the immunogenic capacity and the safety profile of the administration of one dose of Td vaccine to healthy adults, previously immunized to tetanus and diphtheria, was evaluated.
METHODS: Healthy adults, who received one i.m. (deltoid) dose of Td vaccine containing 1.5 Lf and 10 Lf of adsorbed diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, respectively, pa

The aim of this paper is to address the management of tetanus-prone wounds and the use of tetanus prophylaxis within the remit of the emergency nurse practitioner (ENP) to ensure safe and effective management of patients who present to the Emergency Department (ED) with tetanus-prone wounds. The paper will also provide the reader with an overview of the epidemiology of tetanus along with the signs and symptoms of tetanus. Practicalities of tetanus vaccine storage and injection will also be discussed. The paper will also discuss Protetanus which is a single step immunoassay for the determinatio

A 66 year old man was admitted with a left Horner's syndrome, and trismus due to tetanus. Three days later he had respiratory arrests, classical tetanic spasms and was ventilated. He had associated severe autonomic dysfunction, tachyarrhythmias, hypotension, sweating and constipation. There was complete resolution of the left Horner's syndrome with recovery from tetanus.

According to the European Pharmacopoeia (Ph Eur) monograph on Tetanus Vaccine (adsorbed) (1997: 0452), assessment of potency is based on a challenge test in guinea pigs or mice. The end-point is taken as paralysis or death. The test requires a large number of animals and causes severe distress. The aim of the present study was to refine the test, and reduce the number of animals needed, for batch release purposes. Serological assays having the potential of being internationally accepted, have been compared with Ph Eur assays. The study included five tetanus vaccines of various combinations and

We have developed a vaccine delivery system based on the non-ionic block copolymer, Pluronic F127 (F127), combined with selected immunomodulators. F127-based matrices are characterized by a phenomenon known as reverse thermogelation, whereby the formulation undergoes a phase transition from liquid to gel upon reaching physiological temperatures. Protein antigens (tetanus toxoid (TT), diphtheria toxoid (DT) and anthrax recombinant protective antigen (rPA)) were formulated with F127 in combination with CpG motifs or chitosan, as examples of immunomodulators, and were compared to more traditional

AIM: To assess tolerability and immunological activity of Bubo-M vaccine and hepatitis B vaccine in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-three patients with moderate and severe COPD aged 35-65 years were immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, and hepatitis B. Bubo-M vaccine as well as vaccine against hepatitis B were used for immunization. Immunologic effect of vaccination was assessed by measurement of serum antibody level to HBsAg as well as to diphtheria and tetanus toxoids. Assessment of antibody level to HBsAg was performed by ELISA, an

Systematic mandatory immunization of children against tetanus was started in Italy in 1968. Prevalence of tetanus hyperimmunization (> 5 IU/ml) was assessed among 214 immune subjects born after 1968 and found to be 17.3%. This figure is significantly higher (p < 0.01) than the 10.8% found in a previous study of subjects born before 1968. This increase is statistically significant in the Center (p < 0.01) and in the South (p < 0.05) of Italy, but not in the North. Hyperimmunization is not associated with family size (odds ratio 2.16; C. I. 95% = 0.5-7.6) or the father's years of education (odds

Outcome was not different between different tetanus antitoxin (TAT) dosages, although there was a trend of increasing survival rate with increasing TAT dosages. Cases with appropriate vaccination prior to development of tetanus were rare, but had improved outcome and shorter hospitalization.
