Impact of animal-assisted intervention on therapy engagement in hospitalized children with traumatic brain injuries.

BACKGROUND: Individuals who sustained traumatic brain injuries in childhood may experience global challenges including disorders of consciousness, motor dysfunctions, and sensory impairments. Occupational and physical therapy are important parts of recovery from an acute brain injury, addressing deficits that directly affect functional recovery and return to age-appropriate activities of daily living. Difficulty with active engagement in therapy tasks can limit the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions. Therapists search for methods to increase patient engagement to bolster patient progre

Investigating cell therapies in animal models of Parkinson's and Huntington's disease: Current challenges and considerations.

Cell therapeutics have entered into an exciting era, with first-in-person clinical trials underway for Parkinson's disease and novel cell therapies in development for other neurodegenerative diseases. In the hope of ensuring successful translation of these novel cell products to the clinic, a significant amount of preclinical work continues to be undertaken. Rodent models of neural transplantation are required to thoroughly assess the survival, safety and efficacy of novel therapeutics. It is critical to produce robust and reliable preclinical data, in order to increase the likelihood of clini

Bacteriophage Therapy for Staphylococcus Aureus Infections: A Review of Animal Models, Treatments, and Clinical Trials.

Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a common and virulent human pathogen causing several serious illnesses including skin abscesses, wound infections, endocarditis, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, and toxic shock syndrome. Antibiotics were first introduced in the 1940s, leading to the belief that bacterial illnesses would be eradicated. However, microorganisms, including S. aureus, began to develop antibiotic resistance from the increased use and abuse of antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance is now one of the most serious threats to global public health. Bacteria like methicillin-resistant Staphyloco

Highlights of animal venom research on the geographical variations of toxin components, toxicities and envenomation therapy.

Geographical variation of animal venom is common among venomous animals. This kind of intraspecific variation based on geographical location mainly concerned from envenomation cases and brought new problems in animal venom studies, including venom components regulatory mechanisms, differentiation of venom activities, and clinical treatment methods. At present, food is considered as the most related factor influencing venom development. Related research defined the variational venomous animal species by the comparison of venom components and activities in snakes, jellyfish, scorpions, cone snai

Recent Advances in Mono- and Combined Stem Cell Therapies of Stroke in Animal Models and Humans.

Following the failure of acute neuroprotection therapies, major efforts are currently made worldwide to promote neurological recovery and brain plasticity in the subacute and post-acute phases of stroke. Currently, there is hope that stroke recovery might be promoted by cell-based therapies. The field of stem cell therapy for cerebral ischemia has made significant progress in the last five years. A variety of stem cells have been tested in animal models and humans including adipose stem cells, human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells, human amnion epithelial cells, human place

Vigabatrin therapy implicates neocortical high frequency oscillations in an animal model of infantile spasms.

Abnormal high frequency oscillations (HFOs) in EEG recordings are thought to be reflections of mechanisms responsible for focal seizure generation in the temporal lobe and neocortex. HFOs have also been recorded in patients and animal models of infantile spasms. If HFOs are important contributors to infantile spasms then anticonvulsant drugs that suppress these seizures should decrease the occurrence of HFOs. In experiments reported here, we used long-term video/EEG recordings with digital sampling rates capable of capturing HFOs. We tested the effectiveness of vigabatrin (VGB) in the TTX anim

Potential of gene therapy for restoration of endocrine thymic function in thymus-deficient animal models.

The aim of the present article is to discuss the potential of gene therapy for thymic hormones as a novel therapeutic strategy to treat dyshomeostatic conditions associated with congenital athymia or hypofunction of the endocrine thymus. Recent studies using an adenoviral vector harboring a synthetic gene for the thymic peptide thymulin are reviewed. This adenoviral vector was injected intramuscularly in thymectomized and nude mice as well as in thymectomized rats. Transduced myocytes acted as an ectopic source of thymulin thus restoring circulating thymulin levels to normal values. This resto

Usher syndrome: animal models, retinal function of Usher proteins, and prospects for gene therapy.

Usher syndrome is a deafness-blindness disorder. The blindness occurs from a progressive retinal degeneration that begins after deafness and after the retina has developed. Three clinical subtypes of Usher syndrome have been identified, with mutations in any one of six different genes giving rise to type 1, in any one of three different genes to type 2, and in one identified gene causing Usher type 3. Mutant mice for most of the genes have been studied; while they have clear inner ear defects, retinal phenotypes are relatively mild and have been difficult to characterize. The retinal functions

Effect of copper and diethyldithiocarbamate combination therapy on the macular mouse, an animal model of Menkes disease.

Menkes disease (MD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a copper deficiency in the brain. It is caused by the defective intestinal absorption of copper resulting from a deficiency of a copper-transporting ATPase, ATP7A. This gives rise to an accumulation of copper in the intestine. The copper deficiency in the brain of MD patients cannot be improved by copper injections, because the administered copper accumulates at the blood-brain barrier and is not transported across to the neurons. To resolve this problem, we investigated the effect of a combination therapy of copper and sodiu

Mucormycosis during deferoxamine therapy is a siderophore-mediated infection. In vitro and in vivo animal studies.

This study investigates the pathophysiology of mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus, which has been reported in 46 dialysis patients, while treated with deferoxamine (DFO). This drug aggravates mucormycosis, which we experimentally induced in guinea pigs and which lead to a shortened animal survival (P < or = 0.01). The drug's effect on Rhizopus is not mediated through the polymorphonuclear cells. Fe.DFO, the iron chelate of DFO, abolishes the fungistatic effect of serum on Rhizopus and increases the in vitro growth of the fungus (P < or = 0.0001). This effect is present at Fe.DFO concentrations >

In vitro porphyrin-based photodynamic therapy against mono and polyculture of multidrug-resistant bacteria isolated from integumentary infections in animals.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms have been frequently isolated from integumentary lesions of animals, and these lesions are usually infected by more than one pathogen. This study evaluated an in vitro antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using two water-soluble tetra-cationic porphyrins (3-H2TMeP and 4-H2TMeP) against mono and polyculture of MDR bacteria isolated from dogs, cats, and horses. Ten isolates of MDR bacteria (two of each species: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, and Staphylococcus pseudointermedius) were used to evaluate

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Occurrence of ESKAPE Bacteria Group in Dogs, and the Related Zoonotic Risk in Animal-Assisted Therapy, and in Animal-Assisted Activity in the Health Context.

Animal-assisted interventions are widely implemented in different contexts worldwide. Particularly, animal-assisted therapies and animal-assisted activities are often implemented in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and other health facilities. These interventions bring several benefits to patients but can also expose them to the risk of infection with potentially zoonotic agents. The dog is the main animal species involved used in these interventions. Therefore, we aimed at collecting data regarding the occurrence of the pathogens ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiel

Current Challenges and Potential Strategies to Enhance Efficacy of Oral Phage Therapy in Food Animals: A Systematic Review with Quantitative Analysis.

Phage therapy has enormous potential in combating bacterial resistance in food animals. However, its application via the oral route remains limited due to challenges associated with the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) environment and a lack of rigorous clinical trial evidence. Therefore, we systematically searched in Google Scholar, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases following PRISMA guidelines and finally identified 111 articles on oral phage therapy in food animals from where we summarized the key physiological and chemical factors of the gut environment hindering the effectiveness of

Changes in Lipid Metabolism under Alloxan Diabetes in Laboratory Animals and the Influence of Antidiabetic and Hypoglycemic Therapy on These Changes.

Alloxan has been proposed as a diabetogenic agent due to its ability to destroy pancreatic β cells through the formation of free radicals, leading to oxidative stress, which has a significant role in the etiology and pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications. In Wistar rats with alloxan-induced diabetes, the levels of liver glycogen in the liver and the levels of total lipids and triglycerides in the liver, adipose tissue, and muscles were assessed over two months. Experimental diabetes was accompanied by a decrease in the levels of liver glycogen and an increase in the levels of triglyce
