An uncommon disorder with multiple skeletal anomalies: Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is an uncommon disorder transmitted through autosomal dominant inheritance. This syndrome is characterized by multiple odontogenic keratocysts, along with congenital skeletal anomalies and basal cell carcinomas. A 16-year-old girl was admitted with a complaint of swelling on the lower jaw. She had multiple basal cell nevi on both hands. Multiple lytic bone lesions on radiographs were defined as odontogenic keratocysts following the biopsy. The patient was referred to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for detailed musculoskeletal evaluation. Adam's for

Chemotherapy for intrathoracic cancer in dogs and cats.

The thoracic cavity contains numerous tissue types from which tumors may arise. Broadly speaking, the cavity is comprised of the pleural surfaces, the mediastinum and its enclosed viscera, and the lungs. Neoplasms arising from these structures are frequently advanced at the time of diagnosis, and surgery is rarely curative for malignant processes. Although reports describing anticancer chemotherapy use in dogs and cats for tumors of the thoracic cavity largely have been anecdotal, as advances are made in the chemotherapeutic management of comparable tumors in human cancer patients and as veter

Using Materialise's interactive medical image control system to reconstruct a model of a patient with rectal cancer and situs inversus totalis: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital anomaly that refers to a completely reversed location of abdominal and thoracic organs. An extremely small number of patients with this condition, especially those with rectal neoplasms, have been reported. Surgery in these patients is technically challenging. Therefore, we reconstructed a three-dimensional (3D) digital model with the Materialise's interactive medical image control system (Mimics) as a guide for laparoscopic resection. CASE SUMMARY: We report the case of a 68-year-old woman with rectal neoplasms and SIT diagnosed b

Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome: the 60th anniversary of Eaton and Lambert's pioneering article.

This historical review describes the contribution of Drs. Lee M. Eaton and Edward H. Lambert to the diagnosis of myasthenic syndrome on the 60th anniversary of their pioneering article (JAMA 1957) on the disease. There are important landmarks in their article on a disorder of the neuromuscular junction associated with thoracic neoplasm and the electrophysiological criteria for Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS). After 60 years, the main electrophysiological criteria described in Eaton and Lambert's pioneering article are still currently useful in the diagnosis of LEMS.

Pathologic Findings of Pulmonary Lymphoproliferative Disorders.

Pulmonary lymphoproliferative disorders (PLDs) are a diverse group of rare entities characterized by abnormal lymphoid proliferation within the lung. These include both benign and malignant processes and are classified into five categories in the 2021 WHO Classification of Thoracic Tumors: benign hyperplastic disorders, primary pulmonary neoplasms, secondary involvement of the lung, posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders, and histiocytic neoplasms. Diagnosing PLDs is often challenging due to their histological similarity to other lymphocyte-rich interstitial lung diseases, including cell

Granular cell breast tumour mimicking infiltrating carcinoma.

Granular cell tumour (GCT) is a rare, usually benign neoplasm that can mimic carcinoma on breast imaging. GCT can originate anywhere in the body but is most frequently found in the head and neck region, particularly in the tongue. Of the reported cases, 6% have occurred in the breast, most commonly in the upper inner quadrant. We report a case of GCT of the breast presenting as a spiculated mass infiltrating the greater thoracic muscle on breast screening mammogram.

Simultaneous tumors: acute myeloid leukemia infiltrating mediastinal ganglioneuroblastoma.

We report the case of a child presenting with concurrent thoracic ganglioneuroblastoma and acute myeloid leukemia. The peculiarity was the close relation between the two tumors with the latter infiltrating the former one. Histological and genomic studies indicate the different clonal origins of the malignancies in the patient, and we hypothesized that GNB and AML developed independently. Our observation suggests that in patients with more than one tumor, though discovered at different times, one neoplasm is not always secondary.

Pelvic extramedullary hematopoiesis.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is an infrequent cause of thoracic masses. Extrathoracic locations are even less common. We have studied two patients, one with suspected pelvic neoplasm, with technetium-99m sulfur colloid marrow image and transmission computerized tomography. This noninvasive evaluation established the diagnosis of pelvic extramedullary hematopoiesis in both. We recommend a similar diagnostic approach in patients with chronic anemia or other predisposing disease, presenting with a pelvic or abdominal mass.

Purely extradural thoracal Schwanoma: Case report.

INTRODUCTION: and importance. Schwannomas are benign tumors that often occur in the medulla spinalis. It arises from the Schwann cells which form the sheath of peripheral nerves. Schwannomas comprise about 30% of primary intraspinal neoplasms and approximately 75% in intradural, 10% intra-extradural, and 15% extradural. Purely extradural schwannoma is rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We present two adult males with extradural thoracal schwannoma. In this case, the main complaint is paraparesis and followed by suffered low back pain and spastic. The initial symptoms of this tumor depend on the level o

Intraoperative cytodiagnosis of lung tumors by needle aspiration.

Rapid-stain cytologic evaluation of needle aspirates are a recent adjunct to diagnosis and staging of lung neoplasms. The benefits of this approach include ease of sampling from deep and remote lesions and the fact that the results are generally available within 10 minutes. In the past 2 years, we did 187 needle aspirations for cytopathological evaluation in 70 patients at 51 thoracotomies and 21 mediastinoscopies. The cytologic findings from aspirates of lymph nodes, mediastinal masses, and intrapulmonary lesions were compared with diagnosis obtained by histopathological techniques. Quick-sta

Giant solitary fibrous tumor of the pelvis: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare spindle cells neoplasms most likely arising from mesenchymal cells. Usually they involve the pleura. Even if extra-thoracic SFTs are rare, lately they are diagnosed with increased frequency. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of giant pelvic and retroperitoneal neoplasm, a rare solitary fibrous tumor, in a 51-year-old man that was admitted for abdominal pain. DISCUSSION: On CT a SFT appears usually as a smooth, lobulated mass with occasional calcifications, but the imaging differential diagnosis with other mesenchymal tumors is very

Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma mimicking benign sebaceous cyst.

Extraocular sebaceous carcinoma (SC) is an exceptionally rare neoplasm and has been confused in the past with basal cell carcinoma showing sebaceous differentiation. However, in contrast to the latter tumour, SC can be an aggressive cancer. We describe the case of a 55-year-old man with a 3-year history of a 5 × 2 cm lesion on the posterior thoracic wall. It had increased in size during this period but was otherwise asymptomatic. There was no significant past medical history or lymphadenopathy. Nor was there a family history of malignancy. The lesion was totally excised. The histopathological

Giant Cell Tumor of the Thoracic Spine in a Young Female Patient in a México City Spine Center: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Giant cell tumors of the bone (GCTB) are rare, locally aggressive benign neoplasms that primarily occur in the metaphyses of long bones. In less than 2% of cases, GCTBs arise in the spine, predominantly below the sacrum. We report the clinical manifestations, diagnostic approach, and successful surgical treatment of a patient with a GCTB of the thoracic spine. CASE REPORT A 21-year-old female patient presented to the Emergency Department with back pain and upper motor neuron syndrome. A thorough clinical and imaging examination revealed a tumor and pathological fracture of the T7 ve

The role of 68Ga-DOTA derivatives PET-CT in patients with ectopic ACTH syndrome.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Ectopic ACTH secretion (EAS) is mostly secondary to thoracic/abdominal neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) or small cell-lung carcinoma (SCLC). We studied the diagnostic accuracy of CT with 68Ga-Dota derivatives (68Ga-SSTR) PET in localizing ACTH-secreting tumor in patients with EAS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 68Ga-SSTR-PET/CT was performed and compared with the nearest enhanced CT in 18 cases (16 primary and 2 recurrent neoplasms). Unspecific, indeterminate and false-positive uptakes were assessed using conventional imaging, follow-up or histology. RESULTS: We diagnosed 13 thora

Expanding the Anatomical Distribution of PRRX1::KMT2D Fusion Mesenchymal Neoplasms: A Rare Mediastinal Case Report.

BACKGROUND: PRRX1-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasms are rare soft tissue tumors with a predilection for the superficial subcutaneous tissue. The PRRX1::KMT2D fusion variant is exceptionally rare, with only three previously reported cases, all of which were located in the intermuscular regions. However, its occurrence in deep visceral sites has not been documented. CASE: A 62-year-old woman was admitted after a routine physical examination revealed a space-occupying lesion in the left thoracic cavity. Contrast-enhanced CT showed a mixed-density mass (10.4 × 8.1 × 3.8 cm) at the left cardiophren

Atypical intramedullary spinal cord melanocytic neoplasm with hemorrhagic features in a child: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary spinal cord melanocytic neoplasm (IMSCMN) with hemorrhagic features is rare, and it is even rarer in children. The authors present a pediatric case of an IMSCMN involving the thoracic segment of the spinal cord. OBSERVATIONS: An 11-year-old previously healthy girl experienced intermittent low back pain for 5 months, followed by left foot drop, limb weakness, and abnormal gait. MRI revealed an intramedullary hemorrhagic spinal cord lesion at T9-11, with a long syrinx and cord edema. An MRI study of the brain and the remaining spinal cord was unremarkable. The patient

Fibrous lung tumor: a peculiar case.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura and the lung is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm arising from the visceral pleura in the majority of the cases. However there are some extrapleural sites including the lung. Current considerations were raised by a peculiar recent case: an 81-year-old female, no smoker, presented with undefined left thoracic pain. Radiographic findings of a large solid lung mass (10 cm × 9 cm). Computed tomography (CT) confirmed the thoracic mass showing characteristics of a well defined mass with capsule, the position of the mass in proximity of the postero-basal and

A rare case of primary extranodal, extradural histiocytic sarcoma of the thoracic spine and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare aggressive malignant neoplasm of hematopoietic cell origin showing features of fever, weight loss, adenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, and pancytopenia. Primary histiocytic sarcoma of spine without involvement of lymph nodes, bone marrow or systemic features is very rare. Due to highly malignant, aggressive behavior and frequent local and distant metastases, prognosis of histocytic sarcoma is poor. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of primary extranodal variety of histiocytic sarcoma without involvement of bone marrow at extradural location of thora
