Thymic neuroendocrine tumors (TNET) are rare primary epithelial neoplasms of the thymus. This study aimed to determine clinically relevant parameters for their classification and for therapeutic decisions. We performed a comprehensive histological, clinical, and genetic study of 73 TNET cases (13 thymic typical carcinoids [TTC], 40 thymic atypical carcinoids [TAC], and 20 high-grade neuroendocrine carcinomas [HGNEC] of the thymus), contributed by multiple institutions. The mean number of chromosomal imbalances per tumor was 0.8 in TTC (31% aberrant cases) versus 1.1 in TAC (44% aberrant cases)

A histological classification of thymic epithelial tumors was presented by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1999 and again in 2004 following slight modifications, in which thymic epithelial tumors were categorized as thymomas and thymic carcinomas. Whereas thymoma is defined as an organotypic (thymus-like) tumor, thymic carcinoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm with a morphology similar to that of malignant neoplasms arising from other organs. Herein, the recent progress in research of thymic epithelial tumors is reviewed with reference to the WHO histological classification system, w

Ectopic adrenal cortical neoplasms are extremely rare; few involve the central nervous system (CNS). We report a 17-month-old girl with spinal adrenal cortical neoplasms. She was unable to crawl or stand and was irritable at night. Her appearance was asymmetrical; the right side of her face and her lower right leg were enlarged. In addition, she manifested hyperplasia of the thymus, fibrous hyperplasia of the bladder, and hamartoma in the liver. However, all abnormalities were asymptomatic. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed well-circumscribed masses within the dura mater at the T12-L1

PURPOSE: To evaluate the status of limited upper sternal split in general thoracic surgery.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical files of 100 consecutive patients operated on through limited upper sternotomy at a hospital in Italy during the 10 years between January 1995 and December 2004.
RESULTS: Thymus surgery represented the main indication for this approach (n = 51): for myasthenia without thymoma in 28 patients, for thymus neoplasms with or without myasthenia in 22, and for intrathymic parathyroid adenoma in 1. Thyroid surgery constituted the second main indication for upper sternal split…

Thymic malignancies are rare neoplasms, with thymoma and thymic carcinoma-collectively known as thymic epithelial tumors (TETs)-being uncommon tumors that originate from the thymus. Despite their rarity, TETs are the most prevalent tumors found in the anterior mediastinum of adults. The major histological types include squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoid epithelioid carcinoma, and basal-like carcinoma. Thymic enteric type adenocarcinoma, an exceptionally rare variant characterized by the expression of cytokeratin (CK) 20 and/or CDX-2, has been recently proposed as a distinct pathological entity,

Lymphoepithelial neoplasms are biphasic tumours that contain both epithelial and lymphoid components. This heterogeneous group includes benign cutaneous lymphadenoma (CL), malignant lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the skin and dermal thymus. We present two cases of CL in male subjects of 14 and 64 years of age. The latter man had a history of multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and solar keratoses. Histological sections of both tumours revealed similar features of an invasive non-ulcerated tumour with a mixed architecture of BCC and trichoepithelioma. Immunocytochemical examination revea

PURPOSE: To determine the frequency of single lung metastasis, primary lung cancer, and benign lesions in patients with a solitary lung nodule and a primary extrapulmonary neoplasm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The authors evaluated the electronic charts of 149 patients with an extrapulmonary malignant neoplasm and a solitary pulmonary nodule. The histologic characteristics of the nodule were correlated with those of the extrapulmonary neoplasm and with patient age and smoking history.
RESULTS: Patients with carcinomas of the head and neck, bladder, breast, cervix, bile ducts, esophagus, ovary, pr

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are relatively rare neoplasms with 6.4-times increasing age-adjusted annual incidence during the last four decades. NENs arise from neuroendocrine cells, which release hormones in response to neuronal stimuli and they are distributed into organs and tissues. The presentation and biological behaviour of the NENs are highly heterogeneous, depending on the organ. The increased incidence is mainly due to increased awareness and improved detection methods both in the majority of sporadic NENs (non-inherited), but also the inherited groups of neoplasms appearing in at

INTRODUCTION: Neoplasms of the thymus gland are the most common tumors in the anterior mediastinum, and differentiation between benign and malignant forms is rather difficult. Extrathoracic invasions or metastases are extremely rare, and only a few cases have been reported previously.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report herein the case of a patient in whom a thymoma type A recurred at skeletal muscle 2-years after surgery. The metastases were completely resected. Adjuvant treatment was started. Actually, no signs of recurrence were seen.
CONCLUSION: Our case shows that also thymoma type A, generall

Although tumours of the thymus are rare, they are common among neoplasms of the anterior superior mediastinum. They usually exhibit indolent behavior, but do have the capacity to invade surrouding structures. Their metastatic potential is low. Paraneoplastic complications including autoimmune disorders (frequently myastenia, cytopenia) or combined immunodeficiency are of clinical significance. Here we report two case reports of thymoma patients associated with secondary immunodeficiency known as Goods syndrom. The first case exhibited as symptomatic combinated immunodeficiency with oral lichen

Thymic Epithelial Neoplasms (TENs) represent the most common tumors of the thymus gland. Epigenetic alterations are generally involved in initiation and progression of various cancer entities. However, little is known about the role of epigenetic modifications in TENs. In order to identify relevant studies, a literature review was conducted using the MEDLINE and LIVIVO databases. The search terms thymoma, thymic carcinoma, thymic epithelial neoplasm, epigenetics, DNA methylation, HDAC and miRNA were employed and we were able to identify forty studies focused on TENs and published between 1997

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) is an extremely rare malignant neoplasm of the thyroid that originates from ectopic thymic tissue. No sufficient evidence exists regarding the efficacy of chemotherapy for cases with distant metastases or advanced disease because of the rarity of the disease itself.
PATIENT: We report a case of CASTLE with lung metastasis that showed good responses to first-line (cisplatin, doxorubicin, vincristine, and cyclophosphamide) and second-line (carboplatin and paclitaxel) chemotherapies.
SUMMARY: This is the first case of CASTLE rep

This study presents a case of a canine thymolipoma, which is a rare, slow-growing, benign tumor of the thymus composed of mature adipose tissue and thymic tissue. A 9-year-old spayed, female miniature pinscher presented with chronic cough and dyspnoea. Radiology revealed pleural effusion and a mediastinal mass with a fatty appearance. The mass was attached to, and silhouetted, the adjacent pericardium. Microscopically, the mass was composed of adipose tissue with numerous cords and nests of thymic tissue without corticomedullary arrangement. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first descrip

Primary thymic mucinous adenocarcinoma is extremely rare; to our knowledge, only 2 cases have been reported to date. We describe a third case of primary mucinous adenocarcinoma of the thymus in a 41-year-old man who presented with an anterior mediastinal mass with subsequent metastasis to the lung. The initial diagnosis was of metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma, but extensive clinical workup of the patient failed to reveal a primary tumor elsewhere in the body. The specific identification of mucinous adenocarcinoma as a primary thymic neoplasm can be difficult or impossible. Morphologic and im

Spindle epithelial tumor with thymus-like differentiation (SETTLE) is a malignant biphasic neoplasm of the thyroid or neck with propensity for late metastasis. Unlike synovial sarcoma, its main morphologic mimic, SETTLE lacks synovial sarcoma-associated translocations. A single case of SETTLE has shown a KRAS mutation but to date no comprehensive next generation sequencing studies of this rare neoplasm have been undertaken. Herein, we subjected 5 well defined cases of SETTLE to direct sequence analysis of 592 genes and fusion gene analysis of 52 genes frequently rearranged in human cancers. We

BACKGROUND: We sought to evaluate factors influencing long-term survival in 19 patients with primary neuroendocrine tumours of the thymus.
METHODS: From January 1990 to December 2004, 19 patients (14 males, 5 females; mean age 48.6 years) were surgically treated for a primary neuroendocrine tumour of the thymus.
RESULTS: All patients underwent radical R0 thymomectomy and were followed up for a total of 1,459 months (median: 69 months; range: 8-180). Nine patients had associated paraneoplastic syndrome. No operative mortality occurred. Two patients underwent re-do surgery because of local rec

The objective of the recently published World Health Organization Reporting System for Lymph Node, Spleen, and Thymus Cytopathology (WHO system) is to standardize the diagnostic approach to fine-needle aspiration biopsies of hematolymphoid tissues. By categorizing specimens into five diagnostic groups-inadequate/insufficient/nondiagnostic, benign, atypical, suspicious for malignancy, and malignant-the system provides a structured framework that enhances diagnostic clarity and facilitates communication between cytopathologists and clinicians. Each category is associated with a defined risk of m

Six cases of mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thymus are presented. The patients were two men and four women aged 17 to 66 years (median age, 34.5). Clinically, three patients had symptoms of chest discomfort and three were asymptomatic. Grossly, the tumors in three patients were described as cystic structures varying in size from 7 to 8 cm in greatest dimension, with focal areas of induration within the walls of the cyst that averaged from 1.5 to 3 cm. The other three cases had grossly and radiographically well-circumscribed, homogeneous tumor masses. Histologically, the lesions showed a spect

Most lymphoblastic lymphomas (LBLs) are regarded as neoplasms of immature T cells because they express cytoplasmic CD3 and frequently carry T-cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangements. Immature natural killer (NK) and T cells, however, have a common bipotent T/NK-cell precursor in the thymus, and NK cells also express cytoplasmic CD3. Thus, some LBLs could arise from immature NK cells. Mature NK cells express 2 CD94 transcripts: 1A, induced by interleukin 15 (IL-15), and 1B constitutively. Because immature NK cells require IL-15 for development, CD94 1A transcripts could be a marker of NK-LBL. T
