The immune response to tick bites includes T cells specific for tick protein, while IgE producing B cells appear to be derived from B cells specific for IgM or IgG. With repeated tick bites, the T cells develop a strong Th2 signal with IL-4 and IL-13 This obviously relates to IgE pr …

PURPOSE: This study aimed to clarify the epidemiology and clinical features of tick bites in a Japanese spotted fever (JSF)-endemic area.
METHOD: The clinical records of patients with tick bites were retrospectively reviewed based on a survey conducted at Numakuma Hospital, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima, Japan, from 2016 to 2023. Data on basic characteristics, visit dates, residential address, exposure activities, tick-bite sites, and prophylactic antimicrobial prescriptions for each patient with tick bites were collected at the JSF hotspot hospital.
RESULTS: A total of 443 patients with tick bit…

Tea plantations in Sri Lanka cover the central hills of the island, where spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsial infection is common. In most cases, the history of tick bite is obscure and eschars are not present. A 45-y-old female experienced massive tick bites while working in her tea plantation. She developed fever 2 d after exposure, but the diagnosis of SFG infection was not considered until a skin rash appeared on the eighth day. She had a very high titer of antirickettsial antibodies detected by immunofluorescence assay and responded to doxycycline. Here, we highlight the high risk of ex…

BACKGROUND: Local and systemic reactions can occur after bites of Argas reflexus (Argas), a soft tick parasitizing pigeons.
OBJECTIVE: Risk assessment of IgE-mediated sensitizations and systemic reactions after Argas bites.
METHODS: Case histories, skin prick tests (SPTs) with a whole-body extract of Argas containing major allergen Arg r 1, and common inhalants and specific IgE measurements were obtained from 148 subjects who had had Argas bites and 20 volunteers as a control group.
RESULTS: Systemic reactions (urticaria, angioedema, dyspnea, cardiovascular dysregulation, unconsciousness) w

The incidence of Lyme borreliosis (LB) has a rising trend since 1995. In 1995 6,302 cases were reported, in 1996 4,192 (EPIDAT, SZU). The objective of the present work was to assess in a selected population sample knowledge of ticks and their relationship to Lyme borreliosis. The investigation was based on a survey using questionnaires. 110 respondents were selected according to the following pattern: 19 secondary school students, 32 blood donors, 44 visitors of parks, 15 countryside people. 99.1% of the subjects knew about the existence of ticks in the Czech Republic, 10.9% of the respondents

Francisella tularensis can cause a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations depending on the route of inoculation. In northeastern France, tick bites are a frequent route of transmission. Typically, vector-borne inoculation results in glandular or ulceroglandular forms, whereas aerosol exposure causes pulmonary forms. We report the case of a 72-year-old immunocompromised woman (rheumatoid arthritis treated with methotrexate) who developed pneumonia six days after a tick bite, diagnosed four weeks later with a glandular tularemia. Although Francisella tularensis was not isolated from the lungs…

Tick bites and tick-related diseases are on the rise. Diagnostic tests that identify well-characterised tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) possess limited capacity to address the causation of symptoms associated with poorly characterised tick-related illnesses, such as debilitating symptom complexes attributed to ticks (DSCATT) in Australia. Identification of local signals in tick-bitten skin that can be detected systemically in blood would have both clinical (diagnostic or prognostic) and research (mechanistic insight) utility, as a blood sample is more readily obtainable than tissue biopsies. We hy…

We conducted a molecular survey for Borrelia spp. in Ornithodoros ticks previously reported as biting humans. We collected specimens in natural ecosystems and inside human dwellings in 6 states in Brazil. Phylogenetic analyses unveiled the occurrence of 4 putatively new species of relapsing fever group borreliae.

Of 1770 children undergoing emergency department evaluation for Lyme disease, 362 (20.5%) children had Lyme disease. Of those with an available tick bite history, only a minority of those with Lyme disease had a recognized tick bite (60/325; 18.5%, 95% confidence interval 14.6-23.0%). Lack of a tick bite history does not reliably exclude Lyme disease.

Lyme disease (systematic tick Borreliosis, Lyme Borreliosis, chronic erythema migrans) is a naturally-occurring disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, that manifests by migratory ring-shaped erythema, fever, affection of central and peripheral nervous system, heart and large joints. The aim of research was investigation the frequency of infection by Borrellia in children of Ternopil region . 150 children were examined, by interrogation and appropriate laboratory's examination. Age of children was 1 - 16 years old. according to the two-stage diagnostic scheme - Elisa in combination with the im

Vector-borne diseases constitute 17% of all infectious diseases in the world; among the blood-feeding arthropods, ticks transmit the highest number of pathogens. Understanding the interactions between the tick vector, the mammalian host and the pathogens circulating between them is the basis for the successful development of vaccines against ticks or the tick-transmitted pathogens as well as for the development of specific treatments against tick-borne infections. A lot of effort has been put into transcriptomic and proteomic analyses; however, the protein-carbohydrate interactions and the ove

In a recent national survey, over 30% of healthcare providers (HCPs) reported prescribing tick bite prophylaxis in the previous year. To clarify provider practices, we surveyed HCPs to determine how frequently and for what reasons they prescribed tick bite prophylaxis. We included four questions regarding tick bite prophylaxis in the DocStyles 2012 survey, a computer-administered questionnaire of 2205 US primary care physicians, paediatricians and nurse practitioners. Responses in 14 states with high Lyme disease incidence (high LDI) were compared with responses from other states (low LDI). Ov

West African tick bite fever is a prevalent emerging zoonosis from the coast of Senegal to Chad. It is characterized by recurrent fever in association with a deteriorating clinical state. It is now the second most common vector-borne disease in Senegal. The purpose of this report is to describe one case and to review the main clinical and epidemiological features of this disease.

We report on 8 Norwegian travellers to Southern Africa with African tick-bite fever (ATBF), a recently described spotted fever group rickettsiosis. All patients had acute flu-like symptoms and developed I or multiple inoculation eschars. The patients were treated with either doxycycline or ciprofloxacin, and all recovered. The diagnosis of ATBF was confirmed by the detection of specific IgM antibodies to Rickettsia africae by microimmunofluoroscence in convalescent-phase serum samples.
