We describe the case of a 52-year-old man with a history of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tonsil who presented with right subacute otalgia and otorrhea. Dedicated computed tomography of the temporal bones showed opacification within the mastoid process with destruction of bony mastoid septations consistent with coalescent mastoiditis. Preoperative imaging showed no destruction or expansion of the bony eustachian tube that would indicate that a direct spread had occurred. An urgent cortical mastoidectomy was performed. Intraoperatively, a friable white mass surrounded with purulence and

Cysts and fistulae related to the second and third pharyngeal pouches are described. These anomalies probably occur more often than presumed. Unilateral recurring infections of the tonsillar region, including parapharyngeal abscess, may be caused by anomalies related to the second pouch. Third pouch anomalies are located in the piriform recess. Cysts may reach a size that causes obstruction to the larynx and hypopharynx, while diverticulae cause few symptoms.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer globally and nearly one fourth of distant metastases are found at the time of the primary diagnosis. Synchronous metastasis of colorectal cancer to the palatine tonsil is rare. To date, only 5 cases have been published in the English literature. In such cases, the prognosis is worse than in other common metastatic sites. Herein, we report a case of rectal adenocarcinoma who presented with a tonsillar mass initially.

The occurrence of renal carcinoma metastasis to the head and neck region is extremely rare. Some authors have reported metastasis of renal cell carcinoma to the parotid glands, nose and paranasal sinus, tongue, larynx, thyroid and palatine tonsil. In this report we describe a rare case of renal cell cancer metastasized to the right tonsil in a 76-year-old man with previously diagnosed bone and lung metastases. To the best of our knowledge this is the first documented example of radiotherapy treatment in this type of presentation. Radiotherapy was effective in treating the lesion with satisfact

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma is a highly unpredictable tumor that has capacity to metastasize to any organ. A better understanding is needed of the clinicopathologic features of metastatic melanoma and, in particular, of its rare manifestations.
CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman with a past medical history of malignant melanoma presented with symptoms of throat discomfort and bleeding. On physical examination, a dark pigmented lesion was observed on the right tonsil. Tonsillectomy was performed, and melanoma was diagnosed. Computed tomography of the thorax and abdomen revealed a filling defe

OBJECTIVES: Unilateral radiation to cervical nodes has been used as a de-escalation strategy in well-lateralized tonsil cancers. The efficacy of this approach with multiple ipsilateral nodes is not established. The study hypothesis was that unilateral radiation for American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC)-7 T1-2N2b tonsillar cancer results in a low rate of contralateral nodal failure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a retrospective chart review of patients with AJCC-7 T1-2N2b tonsillar cancer from 2 academic institutions who were treated with unilateral radiation. The primary endpoint

A 45-year-old man presented with a tonsillar tumor and rectal syndrome. Histology specimens revealed signet-cell adenocarcinoma of both the tonsils and rectum. The clinical course was rapidly degenerated with multiple metastases in the skin and bones. Tonsil metastasis is rare and generally develops from primary gastric or colorectal cancer, predominantly poorly-differentiated or signet-ring cell adenocarcinomas.

A 71-year-old woman non-smoker referred for repeated haemoptysis showed a tumoral lesion of the left tonsil. Pathological analysis of the biopsy showed characteristics compatible with a breast carcinoma metastasis, in which oestrogen and progesterone receptors were present. The patient had undergone mastectomy and had received adjuvant radiotherapy 24 years previously for a breast cancer with no complaints or signs of recurrence since. Investigations showed disseminated bone metastases but no other soft-tissue deposits. Anti-oestrogen therapy was applied. Only seven similar cases of tonsillar

Tumour metastases to the tonsil are rare and are usually due to spread from malignant melanoma and carcinomas of the breast, lung, kidney or stomach. We describe the clinical and histological findings of a tonsillar metastasis from a malignant pulmonary carcinoid tumour, an occurrence not previously reported.

The existence of branchiogenic carcinomas is questioned in this review, which also discusses the different possibilities in an adult patient who presents with a cystic swelling in the upper lateral aspect of the neck. Most cases of branchiogenic carcinomas reported in the literature may actually have been secondary metastatic lesions from an occult tonsillar carcinoma. We will also discuss the different features of cystic metastasis that distinguish them from solid metastasis, and explain why oropharyngeal carcinomas with cystic neck metastasis should be in a separate category from other head

Sarcomatoid carcinoma, a malignant tumor containing both epithelial-derived malignant cells and malignant mesenchymal cells. Microscopically, cancer cells and sarcoma cells migrate to each other, and CK and Vimentin are simultaneously expressed. A rare case of tonsillar sarcomatoid carcinoma is discussed in our department with dysphagia as the first symptom.

Follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) is unusual, and those with an extranodal origin in the head and neck region are extremely rare. To date, no cases of tumors featuring the characteristics of follicular dendritic cells were reported in Korea. We report a new case of FDCS of the tonsils in a 65-year-old man. A diagnostic tonsillectomy was performed. Based on histopathologic and immunohistochemical findings, the patient was diagnosed with FDCS. Adjuvant radiotherapy was performed due to a high mitotic count. The patient survived with a 2-year disease free period. The differential diagnosis

Follicular dendritic cell (FDC) sarcoma is a rare tumor deriving from dendritic cells of the lymphoid follicle. Only a few cases of extranodal manifestation of FDC sarcoma of the head and neck have been reported. We describe the case of a 47-year-old woman with a FDC sarcoma of the left tonsil that first manifested 11 years ago. She has suffered three recurrences since this time, at continually reducing intervals. Histologically, the neoplasm consisted of an increased number of spindle-shaped cells with partly hyperchromatic nuclei. The patient underwent local tumor excisions, and then receive

A rare case of a tonsillar neurofibroma in a 28-year-old Caucasian male is presented. Benign tumours of the tonsils are rare and of those reported, only a few are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumours (BPNSTs). This is the first report of a solitary neurofibroma of the palatine tonsil in the English literature.

The authors describe the clinical picture of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma originated from palatine tonsil in two children: 7-year old boy and 15-year old girl. After intensive polychemotherapy the complete remission was achieved. The period after the end of treatment is now 5 months and 24 months long, respectively.
