The purpose of this study was to examine possible tissue-dependent differences in rate of healing after mucogingival flap surgery. After intrasulcular incision and a vertical-releasing incision distal to the maxillary and mandibular cuspids, buccal, full-thickness mucogingival flaps were raised in four quadrants of 10 adult cats. The triangular flaps were left open for 30 min and then repositioned and sutured. Tissue reactions were studied histologically after 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days of healing. Although new collagen occasionally was observed in the wound space in the free gingiva at 3 days,

The Octagon Model is a clinical assessment tool designed to assess marginal tissue recession (MTR) and estimate the level of difficulty in achieving root coverage. It evaluates eight patient- and siterelated factors: patient's expectations, smoking status, width of keratinized tissue, absence/presence of cervical lesion, interproximal soft tissue/bone level, depth and width of recession defect, and buccal bone thickness. The model is presented in a three-colored diagram to facilitate communication between clinicians and between clinicians and their patients, and to assist clinicians in optimiz

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to analyze 3-dimensional data of root morphology and development in labial inversely impacted maxillary central incisors.
METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography images from 41 patients with impacted incisors were divided into early and late dental age groups according to their dental age. Sagittal slices in which the labiolingual width of the tooth was the widest in the axial view were evaluated. The inverse angle, the dilaceration angle, and the length of both impacted and homonym teeth were evaluated with SimPlant Pro software (version 13.0; Materiali

AIM: To compare the effects of Cervical Access Cavity (CervAC) and Traditional Access Cavity (TradAC) on root canal preparation, root canal filling, and fracture resistance in mandibular incisors.
METHODOLOGY: Twenty recently extracted and intact mandibular incisors were initially scanned using a micro-CT device. The specimens were anatomically matched to create two groups (n = 10). A wedge-shaped non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) was created on the buccal aspect of all teeth using a double-faced segmented diamond disc. In group 1, a TradAC was prepared, whilst in group 2, access was created

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The etiology and diagnosis of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) remain poorly understood.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical study was to examine NCCL progression in an existing group of participants, establish the incidence of new NCCLs in a 25-year follow-up study, and relate them to possible risk factors, including occlusal factors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-three participants who had completed a questionnaire about their habits, diet, and personal information were evaluated in this observational retrospective study. Impressions were made, and casts from 3 ti

Molar crown morphology varies among primates from relatively simple in some taxa to more complex in others, with such variability having both functional and taxonomic significance. In addition to the primary cusps, crown surface complexity derives from the presence of crests, cuspules, and crenulations. Developmentally, this complexity results from the deposition of an enamel cap over a basement membrane (the morphology of which is preserved as the enamel-dentine junction, or EDJ, in fully formed teeth). However, the relative contribution of the enamel cap and the EDJ to molar crown complexity

Artificial caries lesions were produced in roots of teeth using an acetate buffer system, when the layer of cementum was either normal in thickness, excessively thickened by hypercementosis, or had been removed completely. The rates of lesion progression were measured in each case using polarized light microscopy to measure lesion depth. Analysis of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) loss during the demineralizing process was carried out. The removal of cementum was found to significantly increase the initial rate of penetration of the lesion into the root, although this rate progressively reduce

INTRODUCTION: The restoration of external cervical resorption (ECR) defects requires materials capable of withstanding functional stresses. This study aimed to compare the fracture resistance of different restorative approaches applied to buccal versus palatal ECR defects under simulated clinical conditions.
METHODS: Eighty-one extracted human maxillary central incisors were used. Nine intact teeth served as the positive control group (n = 9). The remaining 72 teeth were randomly assigned to standardized buccal or palatal ECR defect groups (n = 36 each). Each subgroup (n = 9) received one of

Since the position of the mandibular incisors is one of the keys to successful treatment, most orthodontic treatments focus on control but take no special precautions regarding the periodontal environment. Can we trust the lateral headfilm alone when evaluating such slender quantities of bone surrounding the mandibular incisors? What is the true bone situation prior to treatment and above all, following alignment, leveling and uprighting of the incisors? We performed a prospective 3-year study on 50 patients to assess the periodontal behavior of the mandibular incisors following a leveling pha

BACKGROUND: Information on fracture biomechanics has implications in materials research and clinical practice. The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of non-carious cervical lesion (NCCL) size, restorative status and direction of occlusal loading on the biomechanical behaviour of mandibular premolars, using finite element analysis (FEA), strain gauge tests and fracture resistance tests.
METHODS: Ten buccal cusps were loaded on the outer and inner slopes to calculate the strain generated cervically. Data were collected for healthy teeth at baseline and progressively at three lesion

BACKGROUND: Keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOT) are benign neoplasia of dentogenic origin and have a high relapse rate. Various invasive treatment methods (decompression, marsupialisation, enucleation, enucleation with adjunctive therapy such as scraping out of the bone cavity, Carnoy's solution or cryotherapy, mandibular resection) have been described for the treatment of KCOT. There is no common opinion on the best kind of treatment. Most of the articles in the literature report on a follow-up period of 5-7 years, but relapses have been described even after longer periods of time. This a

The aim of this study was to investigate whether cervical wear was associated with occlusal wear and clinical periodontal parameters in relatively older adults. A total of 30 patients, with multiple non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) and without a disease or condition that could cause heavy tooth wear, were included in the study. The periodontal parameters including plaque index, probing pocket depth, gingival recession (GR) and tooth mobility were obtained from 641 teeth of which 475 (74·1%) displayed NCCLs. The levels of cervical wear and occlusal wear were determined according to a tooth

AIM: To investigate the internal and external anatomy of extracted human mandibular canines with two roots and two distinct canals using micro-computed tomography (μCT).
METHODOLOGY: Fourteen two-rooted human mandibular canines were scanned using a high-resolution μCT system (SkyScan 1174v2; SkyScan N.V., Kontich, Belgium). The images were processed to evaluate the size of the roots, the furcation regions, the presence of accessory canals, the mean distances between several anatomical landmarks, the position of the apical foramina, the direction of root curvatures, the cross-sectional appeara

Ground sections of incisors, canines, and molars were selected that showed clear incremental markings in root dentine. The sample comprised 98 Homo sapiens, 53 Pan troglodytes, and a more limited combined sample of 51 Gorilla and Pongo sections. Daily rates of root dentine formation, together with the orientation of incremental markings in roots close to the cement-dentine junction (CDJ), were used to calculate root extension rates for the first 10mm of root formed beyond the buccal enamel cervix. Modern human anterior tooth roots showed a more regular pattern of increase in root length than t

OBJECTIVES: External tooth root morphology has demonstrated utility in understanding the mechanical function of teeth including patterns of loading during mastication and the overall mechanical challenge of foods consumed. Yet, there is still a paucity of information regarding how signals of diet, apart from these patterns, might be reflected in root form. This study examines whether a cross-section taken from the molar root cervix contains signals related to diet and masticatory function in extant catarrhine primates.
METHODS: Micro-CT scans of 11 genera of catarrhines were used to obtain 18

INTRODUCTION: A prerequisite for development of gingival recession is the presence of alveolar bone dehiscence. Proclination of mandibular incisors can result in thinning of the alveolus and dehiscence formation.
OBJECTIVE: To assess an association between proclination of mandibular incisor and development of gingival recession.
METHODS: One hundred and seventeen subjects who met the following inclusion criteria were selected: 1. age 11-14 years at start of orthodontic treatment (TS), 2. bonded retainer placed immediately after treatment (T0), 3. dental casts and lateral cephalograms availab
