Anatomical variation of cerebral venous drainage: the theoretical effect on jugular bulb blood samples.

Recent studies have demonstrated significant variation in bilateral jugular venous oxygen saturation measurements which may be of clinical s … absence of one transverse sinus was seen in four cases and significant asymmetry in the size of the transverse sinuses was present in 13. Quantitative flow studies demonstrated that the ratio of superior sagittal sinus to combined jugular bulb flow showed remarkably little variation (0.46 +/- 0.06). Measurements of transverse sinus flow showed significant asymmetry …

Low-Dose Dabigatran for Venous Sinus Thromboembolism Associated with Hereditary Dysfibrinogenemia: A Case Report.

Dabigatran, an anticoagulant, may increase the risk of bleeding in patients with dysfibrinogenemia because of coagulation irregularities, especially at high doses. Cranial Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Venography (MRV) were used in the diagnosis of venous sinus thromboembolism in a 42-year-old woman with hereditary dysfibrinogenemia, as documented in our case report. Cranial MRI suggested thrombosis in the venous sinuses, which was confirmed by MRV as thromboses in the superior sagittal, straight, left transverse, and sigmoid sinuses. Instead of the usual fixed-dose,

Acquired dural arteriovenous fistula after cerebellopontine angle meningioma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Intracranial brain surgeries, including ventriculostomy, burr hole, craniotomy, and craniectomy, are the most common causes of acquired dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF). Here we report a case of acquired dAVF after a cerebellopontine angle meningioma surgery. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 51-year-old woman was diagnosed with a 40-mm cerebellopontine angle meningioma. The patient underwent surgery via a retrosigmoid suboccipital approach. A small craniotomy and an additional craniectomy were performed. At 7 months after the surgery, she presented with pulsating tinnitus and headache. DIAGN

Prenatal Three-Dimensional Ultrasound Diagnosis of Dural Sinus Arteriovenous Malformation: An Unusual Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Dural sinus arteriovenous malformation is an uncommon intracranial vascular malformation. The affected cases may suffer from sev … erior cranial fossa. The fetus demonstrated obvious dilatation of the torcular herophili, bilateral transverse sinuses, and bilateral sigmoid sinuses, appearing as a novel bull's horn sign on 3D ultrasound. After birth, cerebral angiography confirmed the diagnosis of dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) in the occipital sinus region. CONCLUSION: 3D ultrasound is an a …

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis due to spontaneous, progressive, and retrograde jugular vein thrombosis causing sudden death in a young woman.

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare cerebrovascular condition that affects approximately 5 per 1 million people annually, and … VST was diagnosed. An autopsy revealed CVST that extended from the confluence of the sinuses to the transverse sinuses and tip of the superior sagittal sinus, as well as a thrombus that obstructed the right internal jugular vein. A correct and early diagnosis of CVST combined with heparin-based therapy and/or interventional endovascular strategies may be of benefit …

Use of the posterior pericardium to cover the bronchial stump after right extrapleural pneumonectomy.

Limited tissue is available to cover the bronchial stump after right extrapleural pneumonectomy for malignant pleural mesothelioma. After completing the resection, the pericardial reflection can be freed from the superior vena cava, the right pulmonary artery and veins, and the posterior wall of the pericardial sac between the transverse and oblique pericardial sinuses. The length and mobility from the posterior pericardium can then provide excellent coverage for the right bronchial stump. This technique has the advantage of being easy to perform and requiring limited time and dissection.

Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses and face: part II. Pathological anatomy.

Computed tomography (CT) has added an important new dimension to the radiological evaluation of diseases of the paranasal sinuses and face. Using transverse and coronal scans, accurate assessment of the character and extent of mass lesions in this region can be achieved. Erosion of thin bony lamine and involvement of soft tissue structures of the face can be seen. Most important, CT is capable of precisely defining the extension of lesions into the pterygopalatine fossa, orbit, and cranial cavity, information that is essential for therapeutic planning.

[Misleading x-ray diagnosis due to maxillary sinus asymmetries (author's transl)].

Asymmetries of the maxillary sinus with partial or total radiographic opacity mislead to the diagnosis of chronic sinusitis. Using three radiographic standard projections, computerised planimetric analysis and cephalometric studies helped to explain radiological opacity in 26 patients. So called "mucosal thickening" may be due to varying development of the zygomatic recess. Total opacity was caused not only by unilateral volume difference exceeding 30%, but also by straightning of the first lateral line in basal views of small and moderate sized sinuses. Cephalometric analysis in maxillary sin

Postsurgical development of dural arteriovenous malformations after transpetrosal and transtentorial operations: case report.

The authors present a case of mixed pial and dural arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) in the transverse and the sigmoid sinuses, which developed 2 years after the resection of a trigeminal neuroma via the transpetrosal and transtentorial approach. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of the delayed development of dural AVMs after transpetrosal and transtentorial surgery. The cause of acquired dural AVMs is discussed, and the potential risk of delayed development of dural AVMs after transpetrosal and transtentorial surgery is described.

Anatomical Variations of the Osseous Tentorium Cerebelli and Transverse Sinus Canal/Groove in Small-Breed Dogs: A Computed Tomographic Study.

The osseous tentorium cerebelli attaches to the inner surface of the skull and separates the cerebrum from the cerebellum, thereby dividing the cranial cavity into the rostral and caudal cranial fossae. The transverse sinus canal/groove, located near the attachment margin of the tentorium cerebelli, houses the transverse venous sinus. During surgical procedures, it is essential to understand the anatomical position of the osseous tentorium cerebelli and transverse venous sinus using the surface structure of the skull as a landmark. This study compared the positional variation of the attachment

Transvenous coil embolization of a Cognard V transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula.

Dural arteriovenous fistulas with drainage into the spinal veins, classified as Cognard type 5, can be challenging to diagnose and treat. Brainstem and cervical spinal cord signal abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging result from venous congestion, and can mimic tumor, infection, or inflammation.1-3 Transarterial and transvenous embolization techniques can be used to treat dural arteriovenous fistulas endovascularly. Efficacious transvenous treatment relies on the ability to safely catheterize the draining vein at the dural arteriovenous fistula site. Transvenous access options may seem

State of the Art: Venous Causes of Pulsatile Tinnitus and Diagnostic Considerations Guiding Endovascular Therapy.

Venous variants and pathologic abnormalities are the most common causes of pulsatile tinnitus. These conditions include causes of turbulence within normally located veins and sinuses, and abnormally enlarged or abnormally located veins in close transmissive proximity to the conductive auditory pathway. Such disorders include pathologic abnormalities of the lateral sinus (transverse sinus stenosis and sigmoid sinus wall anomalies), abnormalities and variants of the emissary veins, and anomalies of the jugular bulb and jugular vein. Despite being the most common causes for pulsatile tinnitus, ve

Bilateral transverse sinus stenosis in patients with tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a frequent complaint in patients affected by intracranial hypertension (IH). Recently, some studies have reported an association between idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and bilateral transverse sinus stenosis (BTSS). We investigated the relationship between BTSS and monosymptomatic tinnitus, regardless of its clinical characteristics, in subjects without clinical evidence of IH. We selected 78 subjects (all women, mean age 49.5 ± 10.36) affected by tinnitus, without clinical history of audiological and otological pathologies, enrolled among outpatients of the Institute o
