BACKGROUND: Students may enter a nursing program with a history of trauma and chronic stressors that affect their well-being. Understanding and addressing chronic stress in nursing students may mitigate nurse burnout. This study examined correlations with adverse childhood experiences, stress, burnout, and student wellness.
METHOD: Baseline measurements on well-being and stress-related topics using validated questionnaires were obtained for incoming nursing students in a 2-year baccalaureate nursing program in the Midwest.
RESULTS: Nursing students (n = 272) reported more psychological flexi

This commentary challenges historic and contemporary issues within nursing and provides direction toward a more inclusive future for nursing. This is a call-to-action for nurses, nursing students and nurse allies to advance effort toward the elimination of anti-Black racism in nursing in Canada. To achieve this, it is imperative to move beyond the performative and adopt practices that enable critical reflection and action. Addressing the manner in which exclusion is reinforced and perpetuated requires interrogation of four distinct yet interconnected processes of racial exclusion and discrimin

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a life-threatening complication occurring during pregnancy, labor, or birth and is characterized by sudden cardio-respiratory collapse and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. Amniotic fluid embolism is unpredictable, sudden, and complex. Amniotic fluid embolism is one of the causes of peripartum maternal mortality and morbidity in the United States. Nurses and other health care professionals responding to severe maternal events, such as an AFE, may experience trauma, which can lead to reduced executive functions, and challenges with memory, organization, p

Clearly communicating with other professionals and with sexual assault survivors about the boundaries and imitations of the SANE medical-forensic examination is important. Although SANEs work cooperatively in an interdisciplinary sexual assault response team model to better meet the needs of sexual assault victims, they function as independent professional nurses in their role of collecting medical forensic evidence. Properly defined to focus on assessment, identification, and documentation of trauma, the SANE role is an independent professional role but is still within the scope of basic nurs

INTRODUCTION: We hypothesized that Bedside screening tests (BSTs) would identify dysphagia in geriatric trauma patients without overt swallowing difficulties.
METHODS: Trauma patients ≥65 y were eligible for enrollment. Patients with known risk factors for dysphagia were excluded. All patients underwent BST by nursing and speech and language pathologist followed by a diagnostic confirmatory test for dysphagia. The primary outcomes were diagnostic test characteristics for BST.
RESULTS: Of 139 enrolled patients, 29 (21%) had dysphagia. Median age was 78 y (interquartile range: 72-85). Nursing

INTRODUCTION: Emergency room nurses care for patients during the worst times in their lives: motor vehicle accidents, violence, rape, trauma, death, etc. Continuous exposure puts nurses at risk for secondary traumatic stress (STS): the negative emotional, psychological, and/or physical reaction experienced by someone who had an indirect exposure to trauma. This can impair a nurse's ability to cope, increase levels of anxiety/depression, and intention to leave the profession.
METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, 169 nurses completed a survey between February - June 2023. Data were collecte

Pediatric fractures that present without identified trauma can present a challenge to the nurse practitioner in the orthopedic clinic. Etiologies range from nonaccidental trauma to genetic and metabolic diagnoses that may have been previously undetected. It is imperative that the orthopedic nurse practitioner exercise critical thinking to recognize the potential for underlying diagnoses that can contribute to a child's injuries and make the appropriate referrals in a timely manner. This case study describes a child who presented to a pediatric orthopedic clinic with fractures in various stages

UNLABELLED: We investigated clinical character of thoracic trauma in the octogenarians in local city. Between Jan 2000 and Dec 2004, 369 patients with thoracic trauma were managed in our clinic and 3 local city hospitals in Oita. Ninety patients (23%) were aged 80 or above, 177 patients (46.7%), 64 or below, and 102 patients (26.9%), from 65 to 79. Blunt trauma occurred in the elderly. Penetrating trauma occurred in only 3 younger patients. In the octogenarians, causes of trauma were falls in 54 (60%) of the patients, traffic accidents in 15 (16.7%), and strained back in 14 (15.6%). Falls occu

The opioid crisis has shown evidence worldwide and locally. There was no protocol to detect opioid withdrawal at this organization. The purpose of this project was to develop a nursing-driven opioid withdrawal management tool using the validated Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale (COWS) to address an increase in opioid-addicted patients. Evidence-based practice change was executed using the San Diego 8A's method for adult trauma step-down patients experiencing opioid withdrawal with the COWS tool affecting frequency of nursing attempts at managing opioid withdrawal over an 8-week period. 1. Ergonomic hazards impact employers and workers and their families. Poor workplace design, awkward body mechanics or postures, repetitive movements, and other ergonomic hazards induce or contribute to a staggering number of cumulative trauma disorders. 2. Cumulative trauma disorders (CTD) affect hands, wrists, elbows, arms, shoulders, the lower back, and the cervical spine area. Structures involved include tendons, muscles, bones, nerves, and blood vessels. One can plan strategies for abatement by learning to recognize the hazards that contribute to CTD. 3. OSHA has published the Ergonomic P

BACKGROUND: At the beginning of 2022, Central Europe entered a state of emergency due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Nurses were particularly vulnerable to a decline in their professional quality of life, facing repeated exposure to military trauma, ethical dilemmas, prolonged working hours, and increased stress and fatigue. This study aimed to contribute to our understanding of the potential mediating effect of war-related continuous traumatic stress on the association between moral distress and professional quality of life, including compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, repre

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, predominantly impacting men. The highest risk for the development of a TBI includes athletes, construction workers, military personnel, and law enforcement. TBI is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. The degree of TBI will determine the severity of clinical manifestations. Management of TBI may be a combination of operative and non-operative interventions. Nursing considerations and management include frequent assessment of vital signs and neurologic status, maintaining hemodynamic stability, ear

Six long-term nursing home residents who experienced fractures of the long bones in the absence of obvious trauma are described. All patients had been essentially non-weight-bearing for at least 2 years before the episode. Four patients experienced fractures on more than one occasion. There was no evidence of physical abuse in any of these of patients; indeed, evidence against abuse was fairly good. Nonetheless, physical abuse was alleged by the patients' families in four of the cases. Long bone fracture in the absence of trauma in patients after prolonged bed rest has been well described in t

BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired, perioperative venous thromboembolism is a recognized patient safety indicator in the adult trauma patient population. Mechanical prophylaxis has been identified as a standard intervention to reduce the incidence of venous thromboembolism when prescribed along with anticoagulation or if anticoagulation is contraindicated in the surgical population. Adherence to consistent mechanical prophylaxis remains a nursing issue impacted by numerous factors in patient care.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve the compliance of sequentia

Pediatric craniofacial defects as a result of congenital malformation, tumor, or trauma are devastating to both the child and the family. These patients require extensive education, preparation, careful monitoring and psychological support. With continuing advances in surgical technology and technique, the effectiveness and utilization of pediatric craniofacial surgery is increasing. As this type of surgery is currently available at relatively few institutions, it has created a new nursing experience. A multi-disciplinary team approach has evolved at Texas Children's Hospital which necessitate
