Agricultural land use and ensuing eutrophication both shape parasitic trematode communities in rural African lakes.

Land use is a major driver of biodiversity loss, but how it impacts parasite communities is scarcely documented. Crater lakes and their catchments in rural western Uganda greatly vary in their intensity of anthropogenic disturbance, thus providing an opportunity to assess the effects of land use on snail-borne parasitic trematodes. We applied state-of-the-art molecular biomonitoring to 2385 Bulinus tropicus snails from 34 lakes to detect and genotype trematode infections. The 45 trematode taxa recovered infect a wide range of final vertebrate hosts, and some can cause health burdens of signifi…

Trematode-associated morbidity and mortality of tadpoles in Israel.

Amphibians stand at the forefront of the global biodiversity crisis. The causes of their decline are diverse and include a rise in amphibian malformations due to various factors, especially trematode infection. However, linking amphibian mortality and morbidity with trematode infection has proven to be challenging due to the complex life cycle of the trematodes and the fact that trematodes are nonfastidious in their choice of definitive hosts. In Israel, the decline in local amphibian populations has been mostly attributed to the loss and degradation of wetlands and riparian habitats. Recently

Interactions between two parasites of brown trout (Salmo trutta): Consequences of preinfection.

Preinfection by one parasitic species may facilitate or by contrast hamper the subsequent penetration and/or establishment of other parasites in a host. The biology of interacting species, timing of preinfection, and dosage of subsequent parasite exposure are likely important variables in this multiparasite dynamic infection process. The increased vulnerability to subsequent infection can be an important and often overlooked factor influencing parasite virulence. We investigated how the preinfection by freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera glochidia could influence the success of

Pathological and Epidemiological Assessment of Trematode Burden in Ruminants From Central Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Trematode infections in ruminants cause major economic losses through reduced productivity and liver condemnation, with their epidemiology closely linked to snail habitats, rainfall patterns, and poor grazing management. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2022 to March 2023 to characterize pathological changes caused by trematode infections and identify associated risk factors in ruminants slaughtered at three selected abattoirs in central Ethiopia. METHODS: A total of 256 ruminants, 137 bovine, 64 ovine and 55 caprine were included in the study. The sample size w…

High parasite diversity in a neglected host: larval trematodes of Bithynia tentaculata in Central Europe.

Bithynids snails are a widespread group of molluscs in European freshwater systems. However, not much information is available on trematode communities from molluscs of this family. Here, we investigate the trematode diversity of Bithynia tentaculata, based on molecular and morphological data. A total of 682 snails from the rivers Lippe and Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and 121 B. tentaculata from Curonian Lagoon, Lithuania were screened for infections with digeneans. In total, B. tentaculata showed a trematode prevalence of 12.9% and 14%, respectively. The phylogenetic analyses ba

Nematodes and trematodes associated with terrestrial gastropods in Nottingham, England.

A parasitological survey of terrestrial slugs and snails was conducted at popular dog walking locations across the city of Nottingham, with the intensions of finding gastropods infected with parasites of medical (or veterinary) importance such as lungworm (metastrongyloid nematodes) and trematodes. A total of 800 gastropods were collected from 16 sites over a 225 km2 area. The extracted nematodes and trematodes were identified by molecular barcoding. Of the 800 gastropods collected, 227 were infected (172 had nematode infections, 37 had trematode infections and 18 had both nematode and tremato…

Bithyniid snails as hosts of Opisthorchiidae and Notocotylidae in the south of Western Siberia, Russia.

Opisthorchiasis and related infections are persistent and substantial public health burdens from eastern Europe to southeastern and northern Asia. Snails of the family Bithyniidae act as first intermediate hosts not only for the trematodes of the family Opisthorchiidae but also for those of the family Notocotylidae. There are certain morphological similarities between the aforementioned trematode cercariae. In order to find natural local foci of opisthorchiasis, which are established primarily according to the presence of infected bithyniid snails at the area under examination, it is crucial t

Digenetic trematodes in South American sea lions from southern Brazilian waters.

The aim of this work was to perform a systematic study to detect and quantify the digenetic trematode infections in South American sea lions from the southern Brazilian coast. Twenty-four South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens (Carnivora: Otaridae), were found dead along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, between June 2010 and September of 2011. Two trematode species were found in the intestines of O. flavescens, i.e., Stephanoprora uruguayense (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa (Digenea: Heterophyidae). Ascocotyle (P.) longa reached a prevalence of 33…

An efficient photograph-based quantitative method for assessing castrating trematode parasites in bivalve molluscs.

Parasitic castration of bivalves by trematodes is common, and may significantly reduce the reproductive capacity of ecologically important species. Understanding the intensity of infection is desirable, as it can indicate the time that has passed since infection, and influence the host's physiological and reproductive response. In addition, it is useful to know the developmental stage of the trematode, to understand trematode population trends and reproductive success. However, most existing methods (e.g. visually estimating the degree of infection) to assess intensity are approximate only and

Host density increases parasite recruitment but decreases host risk in a snail-trematode system.

Most species aggregate in local patches. High host density in patches increases contact rate between hosts and parasites, increasing parasit … utions to control for between-site variation in infective-stage supply. After three months, overall trematode infections per cage increased with snail biomass density. For egg-transmitted trematodes, per-snail infection risk decreased with snail biomass density in the cage and surrounding area, whereas per-snail infection risk did not decrease for miracidium-transmitt …

First record of natural helminth infection in early larval stages of two Anuran species.

This study reports trematode infection in tadpoles at early developmental stages under natural conditions. While most previous records describe infections in more advanced stages, we identified metacercariae of the diplostomid Neodiplostomum sp. in tadpoles of five anuran species at the Gosner stage between 25 and 28. A total of 207 tadpoles from eight species (Families Hylidae and Leptodactylidae) were collected from seasonal water bodies from Brazil, of which 39 were found parasitized with helminths. Within this group of infected tadpoles, 20 were specifically parasitized by trematodes, 12 o

No evidence for a dilution effect of the non-native snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, on native snails.

The dilution effect can occur by a range of mechanisms and results in reduced parasite prevalence in host taxa. In invaded ecosystems, the dilution effect can benefit native species if non-native species, acting as resistant or less competent hosts, reduce rates of parasitic infections in native species. In field experiments, we assessed whether manipulating biomass of the non-native snail, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, caused a dilution effect by reducing trematode infections in three taxa of native snails. In contrast to many studies showing resistant or less competent non-native hosts can "dilu…

Trematodes in snail intermediate hosts of a subarctic lake: updated perspectives on molecular diversity.

Subarctic freshwater ecosystems have traditionally been considered species-poor in parasites, but recent molecular studies increasingly challenge this view. We present an updated molecular assessment of trematode diversity in molluscan intermediate hosts from Lake Takvatn, northern Norway, more than a decade after the first comprehensive survey (2012-2013) of this system. A total of 2496 molluscs representing five species were examined in 2024. Molecular analyses of intramolluscan stages revealed 24 trematode species and species-level lineages belonging to seven families. Trematode prevalence

It's a worm-eat-worm world: Consumption of parasite free-living stages protects hosts and benefits predators.

Predation on parasites is a common interaction with multiple, concurrent outcomes. Free-living stages of parasites can comprise a large portion of some predators' diets and may be important resources for population growth. Predation can also reduce the density of infectious agents in an ecosystem, with resultant decreases in infection rates. While predator-parasite interactions likely vary with parasite transmission strategy, few studies have examined how variation in transmission mode influences contact rates with predators and the associated changes in consumption risk. To understand how tra
