We report the first case of tinea corporis bullosa due to Trichophyton schoenleinii in a 41-year-old Romanian woman, without any involvement of the scalp and hair. The species identification was performed using macroscopic and microscopic features of the dermatophyte and its physiological abilities. Epidemiological aspects of the case are also discussed. The general treatment with terbinafine and topical applications of ciclopiroxolamine cream have led to complete healing, with the lesions disappearing in 2 weeks.

An 8-week-old infant presented with 7 weeks history of nail involvement and discoloration. Lesions started over the middle fingernail of right hand at 1 week of age, spreading over to other nails within 2 weeks. Only two nails of the feet were spared. On KOH examination, fungal hyphae were seen and culture showed growth of Trichophyton rubrum. The purpose is to report the earliest case of onychomycosis having multiple nail involvement of fingers and toes (18 nails).

A 13-year-old Japanese boy presented with acute skin inflammation on the extremities. He belonged to a judo club of a junior high school in … chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism) revealed a banding pattern compatible with Trichophyton tonsurans. Treatment with systemic itraconazole was begun and lesions disappeared immediately. Systemic antifungal therapy was needed in our case. Tinea corporis with inflammation necessitates systemic antifungal therapy.

We report a case of dermatophytosis in a Judo wrestler caused by Trichophyton tonsurans (T. tonsurans) with clinical features that mimicked the concentric rings of tinea imbricata. Tinea imbricata is a unique dermatophytosis caused by Trichophyton concentricum (T. concentricum), observed endemically in subtropical to torrid zones and characterized by impressive concentric rings. We found three similar cases of the dermatophytosis in the literature that were reported as tinea pseudoimbricata or tinea indecisiva. All of these cases were associated with systemic or local immunosuppression, perhap…

Tinea capitis is rare in adults. We report a case of adult tinea capitis due to Trichophyton violaceum in China. The female patient was immunosuppressed with prednisone due to the underlying disease of vulgaris pemphigus and was treated successfully with terbinafine. We also reviewed published cases of adult tinea capitis in China and compared these data with the characteristics of published cases in other regions in the world.

The identification of Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. nodulare is described, based on a strain recently isolated from tinea pedis. Different culture media and physiological tests were used in order to compare this strain with related strains. The main characteristics of T. mentagrophytes var. nodulare were its deep yellow-orange pigmentation, which was released from the mycelium, the flat growth of its colonies and the formation of nodular bodies. Supplementation of Sabouraud glucose agar with 3% NaCl reduced the aerial mycelium and stimulated the formation of conidia. Until now an identifica…

An atopic patient with tinea unguium, immediate hypersensitivity to Trichophyton, and elevated specific IgE antibody to Trichophyton had recalcitrant hand and foot eczema that resolved following the administration of systemic antifungal therapy for her tinea unguium. The patient fulfills criteria for the atopic-chronic-dermatophytosis syndrome described by Jones. The authors suggest that the patient's atopic dermatitis may have been exacerbated by her chronic dermatophyte infection and Trichophyton hypersensitivity.

Thirty-eight cases of human infection with the recently described dermatophyte species Trichophyton raubitschekii were studied and a description is presented of the clinical and epidemiological features of infection with this organism. Results revealed the usual preponderance of males (2:1) but a high proportion of individuals of Asian origin (60.5%) in the infected population. Tinea corporis, tinea cruris and tinea pedis were the most common infections. T. raubitschekii differed significantly from the more common Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes in being more strongly associated with…

BACKGROUND: Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes human-type (synonym, Trichophyton interdigitale (anthropophilic)) are major causative pathogens of tinea unguium. For suitable diagnosis and treatment, rapid and accurate identification of etiologic agents in clinical samples using reliable molecular based method is required.
OBJECTIVE: For identification of organisms causing tinea unguium, we developed a new real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with a pan-fungal primer set and probe, as well as specific primer sets and probes for T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes human-type.

UNLABELLED: Dermatophytosis is a highly prevalent superficial fungal infection, yet antifungal susceptibility testing results remain difficult to interpret because clinical breakpoints are unavailable, and epidemiological cutoff values (ECVs) are still limited for most dermatophyte-drug combinations. We conducted a multicenter study of 305 Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton interdigitale isolates collected between 2019 and 2024 at six tertiary hospitals across geographically diverse regions of China. Antifungal susceptibility testing was performed using the CLSI M38 broth microdiluti…

Tinea faciei is a relatively uncommon dermatophyte infection entailing atypical clinical symptoms, usually misdiagnosed and treated with corticosteroids. The authors describe a case of tinea faciei on the right eyebrow caused by Trichophyton interdigitale. The patient was an 18-year-old girl, who had an inflammatory plaque with a scaly, pustular surface on the right eyebrow and upper eyelid, which had persisted for over 1 month. She was once misdiagnosed as having eczema and was treated using corticosteroid cream. A diagnosis of tinea faciei was made based on direct microscopy and culture. The…

Trichophyton tonsurans is the leading cause of tinea capitis in the United Kingdom (UK) as well as causing tinea corporis. This organism has been linked to several outbreaks in the UK and abroad, and such outbreaks may be prolonged since T. tonsurans can be difficult to control. There remains an incomplete consensus in the literature on the optimal management of such outbreaks of this infection. Following notification that a child with T. tonsurans was identified at a day-care center in the UK, initial investigations identified nine cases of fungal infection involving children and staff over t…

Trichophyton raubitschekii was originally described as a distinct dermatophyte species but is now classified as a variant of Trichophyton rubrum. The variant raubitschekii differs from common strains of T. rubrum with regard to morphology, physiology, epidemiology and patterns of infection. It is mostly found in Africa, Asia and South America, but the literature and our observations reveal that seven patients (four men, three women) with T. rubrum var. raubitschekii-infections were meanwhile seen in Germany. All of them were born in Africa and they suffered from tinea corporis or tinea pedum, …

Multiple colonies of Trichophyton rubrum were isolated from single skin specimens from 10 patients with tinea pedis and were typed using a PCR-based analysis of repeats in the rRNA intergenic spacer. In each case only a single strain type of T. rubrum was isolated, suggesting a monotypic aetiology of tinea pedis. This is in contrast to the multiple strains previously shown to be involved in many cases of onychomycosis.

Trichophyton raubitschekii is currently regarded as a synonymous name betokening a variant form of Trichophyton rubrum. Nonetheless, isolates conforming to this morphotaxonomic concept have morphological, physiological and clinical features very different from those of typical T. rubrum. Isolates are mainly obtained from subjects originating from certain tropical and subtropical countries, and are mainly obtained from upper body skin infections, rarely from onychomycosis. In this paper the authors report the first known Italian case of onychomycosis caused by such an isolate. The patient, a ma…
