Chronic infection by the caecal-dwelling intestinal murine nematode Trichuris muris occurs if given as a high-dose infection to 'susceptible' AKR mice or as a low-dose infection to the normally 'resistant' C57BL/6 mouse strain. The objective of the study was to follow the course of Trichuris suis infection in pigs given infective eggs at low (400 eggs), medium (4,000 eggs) and high inoculation dose (40,000 eggs), respectively. The effect of disulfiram on egg shell morphology in the parasitic nematode Trichuris muris was studied in vitro and in vivo. The relationship between varying intensities of Trichuris trichiura infection and iron status was examined in Jamaican schoolchildren, aged 7 to 11 years.
