Bilateral Traumatic Nightstick Fracture of the Ulna - A Rare Case Report and Review of the Literature.

INTRODUCTION: Unilateral isolated ulna fracture secondary to trauma are common but the bilateral nightstick fractures are quite rare in the clinical scenario. These are managed conservatively or surgically depending upon the degree of displacement, location of the fracture, fracture pattern and associated injury to other bones. Proper management of these fractures helps in getting a better outcome. The purpose of the study was to present a case of bilateral traumatic isolated ulna fracture and its management. CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old male presented to the emergency department with complaint

The Use of a Vascularized Distal Ulna Autograft for Complex Distal Radius Fracture Nonunions.

In patients with segmental nonunion of the distal radius, the distal ulna and distal radioulnar joint may not be salvageable. As an alternative to a vascularized free fibula, a pedicled distal ulna vascularized graft is a useful salvage technique. The procedure relies on the vascular bundle of the pronator quadratus and the dorsal oblique arterial anastomosis between the anterior and posterior interosseous arteries running along the interosseous membrane as the pedicle. We present 3 patients who received a distal ulna vascularized graft with concomitant wrist arthrodesis for distal radius segm

Ulna fracture and medial meniscal tear resulting from dog-related injuries.

In this article, we present two middle-aged female patients with ulna fracture or medial meniscal tear resulting from dog-related injuries, which are not common. Both patients mentioned that pain started after their dogs pulled away their collar ropes strongly and suddenly. Both patients had postmenopausal osteoporosis and degenerative osteoarthritis. For this reason, ulna fracture and meniscus tear had developed with low-energy trauma resulting from dog-related injuries.

Nonunion of Fractures of the Ulna and Radius Diaphyses: Clinical and Radiological Results of Surgical Treatment.

Aseptic nonunion of the radius and ulna is a major complication of forearm fractures, accounting for 2% to 10% of all forearm fractures. The aim of our study is to evaluate the functional and radiological results of surgical treatment of diaphyseal aseptic nonunion of the radius and ulna, with autologous bone grafting, decortication and internal plate fixation. A series of 21 patients (26 nonunions) was retrospectively reviewed, the average age was 35 years with a mean of 31,58 years (range 12-44 years). The fractures included isolated radius (n=6) and ulna (n=10), and both radius and ulna (n=

Double plate fixation for correction of the malunited distal ulna fracture: a case report.

A 62-year-old woman visited our hospital one year after a motor vehicle accident complaining of ulnar wrist pain and restricted pronation and supination. Radiographs showed a 35° angular deformity at the ulnar neck. Closing wedge osteotomy was performed using two plates for stabilization. Twenty-four months postoperatively, the osteotomy site united without correction loss and the patient gained adequate pronation and supination. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first report of corrective osteotomy for the treatment of malunited ulnar neck fracture. Although salvage operations

[Comparative study of two operation methods on complicated fractures of the distal radius and ulna].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the differences between external fixator and volar T-shaped plate in the treatment of complicated fractures of the distal radius and ulna, and evaluate the appropriate operation method for the fractures. METHODS: From July 2005 to July 2007, forty-eight cases of complicated fractures of the distal radius and ulna were treated with operation. There were 21 males and 9 females in the internal fixator group, ranged from 22 to 52 years old (with an average of 38.4 +/- 1.5 years). There were 10 mals and 8 femals in the external fixator group, ranged from 25 to 56 years old (wi

Prognostic value of the CURL classification system for proximal ulna fracture dislocations of the elbow.

BACKGROUND: Proximal ulna fracture dislocations comprise a wide spectrum of injury. The Coronoid, proximal Ulna, Radius and Ligaments (CURL) classification is a simple framework designed to aid surgical decision-making by focusing attention on the key components of the injury and their relative severity. It has been demonstrated to have a high interobserver and intraobserver reliability. The aim of this study was to analyze the prognostic value of the CURL classification with respect to patient outcome. METHODS: The CURL framework was applied retrospectively to 182 patients treated surgically

Posterior Interosseous Nerve Injury After a Fracture of Ulna and Radius: A Case Report.

The aim of this study is present a case of isolated injury to the branch of posterior interosseous nerve. A 27-year-old gentleman was presented with an inability to extend the ulnar three fingers of his left hand after sustaining closed fractures of the left ulna and radius after a motorbicycle accident. The patient recovered partially over the course of 3 months but continues to be functionally compromised by the persistent radial deviation of his left wrist and incomplete mobility of the ulnar 3 fingers upon extension. On second exploration, we found the denervated muscles supplied by the re

Biomechanical comparison of screw osteosyntheses and anatomical plating for coronoid shear fractures of the ulna.

INTRODUCTION: Among the few techniques described for the treatment of coronoid fractures, osteosynthesis techniques include screw osteosynthesis from anterior to posterior (AP) or from posterior to anterior (PA) and plate osteosynthesis. The aim of this study was to test the biomechanical stability of screw osteosynthesis and plate osteosynthesis using anatomical plates in coronoid process fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On a total of 25 biomechanical synthetical ulnae, a coronoid shear fracture including 70% of the coronoid height was simulated. Osteosynthesis was then performed using two

Load transfer at the distal ulna following simulated distal radius fracture malalignment.

PURPOSE: To measure the effects of distal radius malalignment on loading at the distal ulna. METHODS: Using an adjustable mechanism to simulate angulated and translated malalignments, clinically relevant distal radius deformities were simulated in a cadaveric model. A custom-built load cell was inserted just proximal to the native ulna head to measure the resultant force and torque in the distal ulna. Loads were measured before and after transecting the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). RESULTS: There was an increase in distal ulna load and torque with increasing dorsal translation a

Avulsion fracture of the supinator crest of the proximal ulna in the context of elbow joint injuries.

PURPOSE: While performing CT examinations of the elbow, we frequently observed a previously undescribed fracture fragment of the supinator crest of the ulna. According to the anatomy of the lateral collateral ligament complex, this fracture might be an avulsion fracture of the annular ligament and/or the lateral ulnar collateral ligament. The aim of this study was to further characterize these fragments and document their associated injuries. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation of CT scans of the elbow was performed. Conventional X-ray and CT diagnoses were used to systematically document any a

Computed tomographic findings and treatment of an unusual fracture of the proximal ulna in a mature dog.

This report describes the diagnosis and treatment of an unusual fracture of the proximal ulna in a four-year-old male neutered Labrador Retriever dog, the orientation of which has not been reported in the veterinary literature. Computed tomography allowed fracture visualisation and aided surgical planning. Fixation was achieved using a lag screw and an anti-rotational Kirschner wire. Six month follow-up indicated satisfactory outcome with complete return to normal function.
