BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was the evaluation of the feasibility of glossectomy using an ultrasonic-activated surgical instrument.
METHODS: This was a prospective study of 13 consecutive patients who underwent glossectomy (12 partial and one total) for carcinoma of tongue with the use of ultrasonic scissors.
RESULTS: All 13 patients had glossectomy, with median blood loss of 0 mL. The glossectomies were done with an ultrasonic dissector alone. None of the glossectomies required diathermy, ligature, plication, or other methods for hemostasis. The lingual artery and veins of all 13 patie

In order to evaluate the harmonic scalpel during "open" thyroid surgery, a prospective randomized study was performed using the device versus the traditional procedure. One hundred and forty-two multinodular goiter patients were selected for total thyroidectomy and subdivided into two gender- and age-matched groups. Calciphylaxis is a serious disease most commonly occurring in patients with end-stage renal disease characterized by systemic medial calcification of the arteries and tissue necrosis due to ischaemia. Ultrasonic investigation of the kidneys in B-regimen was made in 45 patients with chronic pyelonephritis and mild, moderate and severe arterial hypertension aged 40-60 years. This report describes the clinical application of an ultrasonic aspirator for endoscopic neurosurgery. Eight patients with intraventricular hematoma with complete tamponade of the ventricular system and marked hydrocephalus were treated with the ultrasonic aspirator for endoscopic neurosurgery. Seven cases of urachal anomalies are presented. The spectrum of the disorder and the criteria for ultrasound diagnosis are described. Six of seven cases were correctly diagnosed pre-operatively with diagnostic ultrasound, but one case with no cystic component was missed. The appearance of a fixed, midline, cystic, extraperitoneal swelling between the umbilicus and the bladder should suggest the diagnosis.

From 1989 to 1991, 126 tonsils were prospectively studied in cadavers, volunteers and patients by B-scan ultrasonography. The transducer was positioned just medial of the mandibular angle.
