Cancer and non-cancer mortality among French uranium cycle workers: the TRACY cohort.

OBJECTIVES: The health effects of internal contamination by radionuclides, and notably by uranium, are poorly characterised. New cohorts of uranium workers are needed to better examine these effects. This paper analyses for the first time the mortality profile of the French cohort of uranium cycle workers. It considers mortality from cancer and non-cancer causes. METHODS: The cohort includes workers employed at least 6 months between 1958 and 2006 in French companies involved in the production of nuclear fuel. Vital status and causes of death were collected from French national registries. Wo

Cancer incidence and mortality from exposure to radon progeny among Ontario uranium miners.

OBJECTIVES: The study objectives were to extend the follow-up of the Ontario uranium miners cohort, one of the largest cohorts of uranium miners with low cumulative exposures, to examine the relationship between radon exposure and lung cancer mortality and, for the first time incidence, and address gaps in the literature, including dose-response relationship between radon exposure and other cancer sites, and non-cancer mortality. METHODS: The cohort of mine and mill workers was created using data from Canada's National Dose Registry and the Ontario Mining Master File. The follow-up for the co

Dynamic energy-based modeling of uranium and cadmium joint toxicity to Caenorhabditis elegans.

Toxicokinetic - toxicodynamic energy-based models offer new alternatives to the commonly used approaches for the analysis of mixture toxicity data. Based on the Dynamic Energy Budget theory, DEBtox models enable the description of several endpoints over time simultaneously under the same framework. However, such model still has to be faced with experimental data in a multi-contamination context. In this study, the predictive capacities of a DEBtox model to describe the uranium and cadmium joint toxicity over the entire growth and reproduction period of the soil nematode Caenorhabditis elegans

Bisphosphonate-containing supramolecular hydrogels for topical decorporation of uranium-contaminated wounds in mice.

PURPOSE: Personnel experiencing accidents that involve radionuclides or victims of potential malicious radioactive attacks may suffer injuries with wounds contaminated by radionuclides. The current treatment for contamination from uranium in external injuries is the use of saline solution to wash the wounds, which has the drawback of further spreading of the contaminants due to the flow of water. To minimize the cost of storage of contaminated liquids and to improve the efficiency of treatment, we propose the use of hydrogels as a form of decorporation agent. METHODS: Mice with uranium-contam

Mortality from cardiovascular diseases in the German uranium miners cohort study, 1946-1998.

An increased risk of cardiovascular diseases after exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation has been suggested among the atomic bomb survivors. Few and inconclusive results on this issue are available from miner studies. A positive correlation between coronary heart disease mortality and radon exposure has been reported in the Newfoundland fluorspar miners study, yet low statistical power due to small sample size was of concern. To get further insight into this controversial issue, data from the German uranium miners cohort study were used, which is by far the largest miner study up to date

Electrophysiological changes in hippocampal slices isolated from rats embedded with depleted uranium fragments.

Although nephrotoxicity is considered to be the most serious consequence of uranium exposure, several studies have previously suggested the potential for neurotoxicity. In Operation Desert Storm, U.S. military personnel were wounded by fragments of depleted uranium (DU). This study was initiated to test the potential for DU fragments to cause electrophysiological changes in the central nervous system. Rats were surgically implanted with pellets of DU or tantalum (Ta) as a control metal. After 6, 12 and 18 months rats were euthanized, hippocampi removed and electrophysiological potentials analy

Synergistic Coordination Mechanism of Aminophosphonate-Functionalized UiO-66 for Enhanced Uranium(VI) Adsorption.

The stringent environmental regulations on uranium-containing wastewater have rendered traditional treatment methods largely inadequate, creating an urgent demand for high-performance and stable adsorbents. In this study, the modified UiO-66 with aminophosphonate groups (UiO-66-NH2-P) was used to enhance its U(VI) removal capacity from water through the synergistic effect of multifunctional groups. U6NP retains a well-defined MOF framework after acid immersion(pH 1-2). Under optimal conditions, the maximum U(VI) adsorption capacity reaches 320.81 mg/g. The adsorption behavior conformed to the

Covalent-Organic Framework with Unconventional D-D Structure for Efficient Photocatalytic Uranium Extraction.

Photocatalytic extraction of uranium from radioactive wastewater is crucial for environmental safety and sustainable nuclear energy development. It is widely recognized that photocatalysts with donor-acceptor (D-A) or D-π-A structures exhibit enhanced charge separation efficiency, thereby showing excellent photocatalytic performance. Herein, we presented a counterintuitive design of a donor-donor covalent-organic framework (D-D COF) for efficient photocatalytic uranium extraction. A twisted D-D COF (COF-BCTB-Py) was synthesized via solvothermal condensation using bicarbazole and pyrene as dual

An upper bound on uranium-mining radon contributions to regional environmental 210Pb inventories.

Radon releases from uranium-mining legacies are commonly evaluated in relation to inhalation exposure. Here, the separate question is whether the 210Pb produced from sustained legacy releases could perturb the inventories used to date and interpret soils, sediments, peat and other environmental archives. This paper bounds that possibility and tests the natural-meteoric provenance assumption underlying regional excess-210Pb interpretation. Because decay-chain mass balance conserves atoms rather than activity, conversion from a 3.8-day radionuclide to a 22.3-year radionuclide reduces the associa

Multigenerational effects of uranium exposure reveal stronger testicular dysregulation in the second generation.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a significant public health issue that can be influenced by environmental pollutants. As a radioactive heavy metal and environmental contaminant, uranium has the potential to impact fertility. OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the multigenerational reproductive effects of chronic, non-nephrotoxic uranium exposure across three generations of male rats. METHODS: In this study, a non-nephrotoxic uranium solution (40 mg/L) was chronically administered via drinking water to male and female F0 rats (n = 20 per group) throughout their lifespan. The objective was to evaluate

Bioremediation of uranium enriched coal fly ash based on microbially induced calcite precipitation.

Coal fly ash (CFA) is an essential raw material in brickmaking industry worldwide. There are some coal mines with a relatively high content of uranium (U) in the Xinjiang region of China that are yet understudied. The CFA from these coal mines poses substantial environmental risks due to the concentrated uranium amount after coal burning. In this paper, we demonstrated a calcifying ureolytic bacterium Halomonas sp. SBC20 for its biocementation of U in CFA based on microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP). Rectangle-shaped CFA bricks were made from CFA using bacterial cells, and an elec

Enhanced sequestration of uranium by coexisted lead and organic matter during ferrihydrite transformation.

The dynamic reactions of uranium (U) with iron (Fe) minerals change its behaviors in soil environment, however, how the coexisted constituents in soil affect U sequestration and release on Fe minerals during the transformation remains unclear. Herein, coupled effects of lead (Pb) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) on U speciation and release kinetics during the catalytic transformations of ferrihydrite (Fh) by Fe(II) were investigated. Our results revealed that the coexistence of Pb and DOM significantly reduced U release and increased the immobilization of U during Fh transformation, which we

Pulmonary health effects in Gulf War I service members exposed to depleted uranium.

OBJECTIVE: In a population of Gulf War I veterans who sustained inhalational exposure to depleted uranium during friendly fire incidents in 1991, we evaluated whether those with high body burdens of uranium were more likely to have pulmonary health abnormalities than those with low body burdens. METHODS: We compared self-reported respiratory symptoms, mean pulmonary function values, and prevalence of low-dose chest computed tomography abnormalities between high and low urine uranium groups. RESULTS: We found no significant differences in respiratory symptoms, abnormal pulmonary function valu

(234)U/(238)U signatures associated with uranium ore bodies: part 3 Koongarra.

The Koongarra ore body is an early Proterozoic U ore body in the Alligator Rivers U province, Northern Territory, Australia. It has surface expression with a redox front located ∼30 m below the surface. The (234)U/(238)U activity ratios (AR) for the ground water and the amorphous phase of the solid have been analysed for the ore zone and dispersion halo as a function of depth. The results display a (234)U/(238)U AR signature with depth which may be common to all U ore bodies. The (234)U/(238)U AR is depressed below secular equilibrium in the weathered material above the redox front; rises sign

Applications of Capstone depleted uranium aerosol risk data to military combat risk management.

Risks to personnel engaged in military operations include not only the threat of enemy firepower but also risks from exposure to other hazards such as radiation. Combatant commanders of the U.S. Army carefully weigh risks of casualties before implementing battlefield actions using an established paradigm that takes these risks into consideration. As a result of the inclusion of depleted uranium (DU) anti-armor ammunition in the conventional (non-nuclear) weapons arsenal, the potential for exposure to DU aerosols and its associated chemical and radiological effects becomes an element of the com

Cancer risk in nuclear workers occupationally exposed to uranium-emphasis on internal exposure.

Workers involved in the nuclear fuel cycle have a potential for internal exposure to uranium. The present review of epidemiological studies of these workers aims to elucidate the relationship between occupational internal uranium exposure and cancer risk. Eighteen cohort and 5 nested case-control studies published since 1980 are reviewed. Workers occupationally exposed to uranium appear to be at increased risk of mortality from neoplasms of the lung, larynx, and lymphatic and haematopoietic tissue. Currently available evidence for a positive association between internal exposure to uranium and
