One hundred and three female patients attending an incontinence clinic gave information about their marital lives and sexual habits. Forty-eight women (46 per cent) maintained that their urinary disorder had adversely affected sexual relations. Women with bladder instability had a significantly higher incidence of sexual dysfunction than women with genuine stress incontinence.

PURPOSE: Urinary incontinence (UI) is a significant complication following surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP), including laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSC). Although the incidence of postoperative UI is lower after LSC than after transvaginal mesh surgery, a subset of patients still experience UI. This study aimed to determine which factors, including mesh-related factors, contribute to UI impairing daily life following LSC.
METHODS: The study enrolled 96 patients who underwent LSC at our institution between June 2016 and September 2023. The Pearson chi-square test, multiple logistic regr…

The frequency and severity of urinary incontinence (UI) increase with age. Its prevalence varies according to living environment: it is less common among older people living at home than in hospitals or nursing homes. UI is a geriatric syndrome with multiple causes (comorbidities, polypharmacy, etc.) and harmful consequences: reduced quality of life for people and their careers, depression, falls, institutionalization. Diagnosis of UI is based on history-taking and a basic medical check-up, with the aim of ruling out red flags and the causes of transient UI, pointing to an etiology and determi…

The International Children's Continence Society (ICCS) has undertaken an enormous effort to standardize both the terminology and management of various aspects of incontinence in children, including enuresis, bladder overactivity, dysfunctional voiding and psychological comorbidities. A number of guidelines have been published to aid those involved in the care of children with lower urinary tract symptoms. This review addresses a number of recommended diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, including urotherapy and pharmacological treatment, with emphasis on a focused medical history, informatio

Urinary Incontinence (UI) is an often under-reported and untreated medical condition that affects the lives of women of all ages and backgrounds. Although there are six major types of UI, stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the type most often associated with women of childbearing age. Development of SUI has also been linked to the childbirth process itself. This article will discuss the types, characteristics, and diagnosis of UI, with a focus on SUI. Precipitating factors for SUI, including the influence of pregnancy, childbirth, and aging on its development, will be reviewed.

Neuromodulation has been reported to be effective for the treatment of stress and urgency urinary incontinence. The cure and improvement rates of pelvic floor neuromodulation in urinary incontinence are 30-50% and 60-90%, respectively. In clinical practice, vaginal, anal and surface electrodes are used for external, short-term stimulation, and sacral nerve stimulation for internal, chronic (long-term) stimulation. The effectiveness of neuromodulation has been verified in a randomized, placebo-controlled study. However, the superiority to other conservative treatments, such as pelvic floor musc…

Urinary incontinence is an important and common health care problem affecting the elderly population. Common types of incontinence affecting the elderly are: stress incontinence, urge incontinence, overflow incontinence and mixed type. The elderly patient suffering from urinary incontinence does not often seek treatment voluntary due to a misconception that it is part of a normal ageing process. Without treatment, urinary incontinence may lead to serious psychological and social complications such as depression, anxiety, embarrassment, low self-esteem and social isolation. Overall it is associ…

Electric stimulation in Urology has undergone considerable development since the 1970s. The implantation methods for urinary system stimulation are used for bladder emptying in neurogenic bladders (Neurostimulation) or the modulation of the electrical transmission of the voiding cycle caused by chronic detrusor-sphincter dysfunction (Neuromodulation). Both techniques have in common the direct stimulation of the sacral roots, responsible for the urinary reflex arc. The first of them works via external stimulation over an implanted antenna, and the second via permanent stimulation through an imp

A selection from a little-known medical treatise of the early 19th century is presented which describes the condition of urinary stress incontinence and its treatment by means of pessaries, mechanical occlusive devices and electrical stimulation therapy. The author provides a foreshadowing of therapies that would come into more common use 150 years later.

BACKGROUND: It is possible that oestrogen deficiency may be an aetiological factor in the development of urinary incontinence in women.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of oestrogens used for the treatment of urinary incontinence.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Group trials register (November 2002) and the reference lists of relevant articles. Date of the most recent searches: November 2002.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomised or quasi-randomised controlled trials that included oestrogens in at least one arm, in women with symptomatic or urodynamic diagnoses of stress, u…

Older men experience UI less often than older women, but the disruption and bother they experience because of UI is significant. Several anatomic differences between men and women account for different pathophysiology of incontinence. In men, overflow incontinence and detrusor instability predominate; stress incontinence is seen only in cases in which men have had prostate surgery. Reported symptoms of urgency and urge incontinence may be particularly difficult to interpret clinically in men because they might indicate detrusor instability or bladder outlet obstruction causing uninhibited cont

Urinary incontinence is common in the elderly, affecting 6-8% of people over 64 years in the community and up to 31% in hospital and long-term care. It is possible to establish the diagnosis clinically in most incontinent patients with the likelihood of improving symptoms in the majority. Treatment of patients with urinary incontinence requires attention to general and specific measures. General measures include moderation of fluid intake to about 1.5 litres/day, reduced intake of caffeine-rich drinks, treatment of aggravating conditions such as urinary infection, oestrogen deficiency, increas…

Male urinary incontinence needs usually a surgical treatment. Over-flow incontinence is due to bladder neck, prostatic or urethral obstruction and is treated by transurethral resection of the prostate or uretrotomy. Intrinsic sphincter deficiency needs an artificial sphincter implantation or an endoscopic periurethral injection of teflon particles or collagen. Incontinence due to detrusor over-activity is rarely treated by subtrigonal phenol injection or ileal detubularized cystoplasty augmentation.
