The otolith vermis: A systems neuroscience theory of the Nodulus and Uvula.

The Nodulus and Uvula (NU) (lobules X and IX of the cerebellar vermis) form a prominent center of vestibular information processing. Over decades, fundamental and clinical research on the NU has uncovered many aspects of its function. Those include the resolution of a sensory ambiguity inherent to inertial sensors in the inner ear, the otolith organs; the use of gravity signals to sense head rotations; and the differential processing of self-generated and externally imposed head motion. Here, I review these works in the context of a theoretical framework of information processing called the in…

Zonal organization of climbing fiber projections to the uvula in the cat.

Climbing fiber projections from the inferior olive to the uvula of the cerebellum were studied in the cat by using retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase. Following large and small injections into various parts of the uvula, the distribution of labeled cells in the inferior olive was investigated. The findings indicate six longitudinal zones extending throughout the dorsal and ventral uvula: the caudal part of the nucleus beta projects to a most medially located zone (caudal beta zone) with a width of about 0.4 mm; the rostral part of the nucleus beta projects to a zone located …

Interstitial and external radiotherapy in carcinoma of the soft palate and uvula.

Forty-three patients, all male, with limited epidermoid carcinoma of the soft palate and uvula were treated by interstitial implant usually associated with external radiotherapy. Most patients received 50 Gy external irradiation to the oropharynx and neck followed by 20-35 Gy by interstitial iridium-192 wires using either guide gutters or a plastic tube technique. Twelve primary tumors and two recurrences after external irradiation alone had implant only for 65-75 Gy. Total actuarial local control is 92% with no local failures in 34 T1 primary tumors. Only one serious complication was seen. Ov…

Epidermoid Cyst of the Uvula Causing Airway Compromise in a Neonate.

Congenital uvular cysts are rare lesions in the pediatric population and are typically asymptomatic or discovered incidentally. Only a few cases have been associated with airway obstruction, and none have been reported in a newborn from the Saudi region. This report presents what we believe is the first documented case of a congenital uvular epidermoid cyst in a neonate presenting with airway compromise. We describe a male newborn, delivered at 36 + 5 weeks of gestation, who developed signs of cyanosis and desaturation shortly after birth. During anesthesia for emergent abdominal surgery, a la…

Keep an Eye Out for the Bifid Uvula: A Case Report.

The incidence of submucous cleft palate is between 1:1250-1:6000. It is important for this relatively silent deformity to be identified early and referred appropriately as a delay in diagnosis may affect the patient's quality of speech in the long-term. This paper presents a case of submucous cleft palate which was diagnosed late (age 14). Nevertheless, by the appropriate intervention of the multidisciplinary cleft team, the patient was treated successfully. Clinical Relevance. Dentists and doctors need to be aware of the signs and symptoms associated with submucous cleft palate so that they c

Epidermal inclusion cyst of the soft palate and uvula in an infant.

Congenital epidermal inclusion cysts of the soft palate or the uvula are uncommon mass lesions, and there have been only limited case reports of these in the literature. Although epidermal cysts are benign in nature and develop slowly, mass lesions growing near the soft palate or the uvula can result in velopharyngeal insufficiency, affecting both speech and swallowing. We present such a condition in a 7-month-old male infant with an epidermal inclusion cyst involving both the soft palate and the uvula.
