During a period of intensive practice, 2 petanque players developed freezing of shoulder flexion impeding boule throwing. This movement disorder was consistent with the diagnosis of task-specific focal dystonia. Polymyography showed that freezing was associated with bursts of low amplitude. In the absence of motor or sensory deficits, a motor apraxia could be considered.

UNLABELLED: Teaching videotapes, developed to aid in the evaluation of several movement disorders, have not been used in essential tremor research. As part of the Washington Heights-Inwood Genetic Study of Essential Tremor (WHIGET), we developed a reliable and valid tremor rating scale. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the movement patterns (MPs) in young adults moving supine from the foot to the head of a bed.
SUBJECTS: Thirty-six young adults, aged 19 through 44 years, participated in this study.

Although commonly encountered in all human cultures, laughter remains poorly understood. In order to examine laryngeal function during laughter, telescopic and fiberscopic videolaryngoscopy was performed on five subjects, who laughed in the different vowels, at various frequencies, and in several voice qualities. There is a need for objective evaluation of the effectiveness of treatment of spasmodic torticollis so that comparisons can be made between different therapies. Video tape recordings of patients undergoing surgery for spasmodic torticollis were digitized and the movement of a reference marker was tracked by computer. Ten patients were examined before and after proximal gastric vagotomy with videotape recordings of barium passage in esophagus, esophageal pressure recordings, and the insulin test. Four of the patients complained of dysphagia after the operation. The dysphagia subsided spontaneously after 1--2 months. Based on blind review of videotape recordings, we analyzed the ability of tetrabenazine to suppress abnormal movements. The recordings were done before treatment, after 3 weeks on a stable dose (up to 200 mg daily) of tetrabenazine, and then after 3 weeks on placebo. Among the patients who completed the trial, improvement occurred in 6 of 8 with Huntington disease, 6 of 10 with tardive dyskinesia, and 3 of 8 with dystonic disorders. The drug was usually tolerated well.
