Visual performance of phase alteration utilizing sub-elements lenses for potential myopia management.

PURPOSE: To compare the visual performance (VP) of P.A.U.S.E. spectacle lenses (tests) against defocus incorporated multiple segments (DIMS; control). METHODS: This randomized, single-masked study included 48 participants aged 18-41 years who wore five tests (T1, T2, T4, T5, T6) and DIMS. VP was assessed through the full-lens and inferior treatment zone. Full-lens visual-acuity (VA) based measurements comprised monocular high- and low-contrast VA (HCVA/LCVA) at 6 m and binocular HCVA at 6 m and 40 cm. Assessments through the treatment zone comprised HCVA at 40 cm and subjective ratings (1-10

Harmonization of Outcomes and Vision Endpoints in Vision Restoration Trials: Recommendations from the International HOVER Taskforce.

Translational research in vision prosthetics, gene therapy, optogenetics, stem cell and other forms of transplantation, and sensory substitution is creating new therapeutic options for patients with neural forms of blindness. The technical challenges faced by each of these disciplines differ considerably, but they all face the same challenge of how to assess vision in patients with ultra-low vision (ULV), who will be the earliest subjects to receive new therapies. Historically, there were few tests to assess vision in ULV patients. In the 1990s, the field of visual prosthetics expanded rapidly

Colour vision abnormalities in multiple sclerosis.

A battery of colour vision tests was employed to evaluate visual function in patients with multiple sclerosis (M.S.). Colour deficits were found in 45% of patients tested with the Ishihara plates and 42.5% of patients tested with the FM 100-Hue test. 65% of M.S. patients failed at least one of the tests. The colour vision deficits were not restricted to patients with optic neuritis or with visual evoked potential (VEP) abnormalities and there was no significant correlation between an abnormal VEP latency and a colour vision deficit. Colour vision testing may be a useful option to consider in t…

Vision screening of older people.

A recent systematic review found that between 20% and 50% of older people in the UK have undetected reduced vision and in most cases this is … t upon the format of the vision screening programme. There is still uncertainty over the battery of vision tests that are most appropriate. This, and optimum venues for screening, require further research before it can be fully determined whether vision screening of older people meets the Wilson criteria. If a vision screening programme using a battery of visi …

[Activation-induced changes in visual functions].

Visual functions were tested in 18 healthy male medical students on a control day and on the day of an oral examination. Stress induced impairment was observed in binocular tests measuring accommodation, convergence or their mutual relationship (near points of accommodation and convergence, Maddox-wing). Results of tests in which fusion operates as stabilizing factor (slightly dissociating test: Polatest) or of tests designed for far distance vision (synoptophore, Maddox-cross, Pola-cross) did not show significant impairment under examination stress. In slightly dissociating tests an activity-

Objective vs subjective measures of fixation disparity for short and long fixation periods.

PURPOSE: Fixation disparity, i.e. the vergence error for stationary fusion stimuli, can be measured objectively with eye trackers and subjectively with nonius lines. Between these two measures, previous studies found differences that tended to be proportional to the amount of forced vergence, i.e. the discrepancy between vergence and accommodative stimulus. We investigate whether objective and subjective fixation disparity might be similar without forced vergence. METHOD: We simultaneously measured fixation disparity with the EyeLink II system and with flashed dichoptic nonius lines in 17 sub

No Useful Field Expansion with Full-field Prisms.

SIGNIFICANCE: Full-field prisms that fill the entire spectacle eye wire have been considered as field expansion devices for homonymous hemianopia (HH) and acquired monocular vision (AMV). Although the full-field prism is used for addressing binocular dysfunction and for prism adaptation training after brain injury as treatment for spatial hemineglect, we show that the full-field prism for field expansion does not effectively expand the visual field in either HH or AMV. PURPOSE: Full-field prisms may shift a portion of the blind side to the residual seeing side. However, foveal fixation on an

Screening for visual impairment in children ages 1-5 years: update for the USPSTF.

CONTEXT: Screening could identify preschool-aged children with vision problems at a critical period of visual development and lead to treatments that could improve vision. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of screening preschool-aged children for impaired visual acuity on health outcomes. METHODS: We searched Medline from 1950 to July 2009 and the Cochrane Library through the third quarter of 2009, reviewed reference lists, and consulted experts. We selected randomized trials and controlled observational studies on preschool vision screening and treatments, and studies of diagnostic

Dynamic visual tests to identify and quantify visual damage and repair following demyelination in optic neuritis patients.

In order to follow optic neuritis patients and evaluate the effectiveness of their treatment, a handy, accurate and quantifiable tool is required to assess changes in myelination at the central nervous system (CNS). However, standard measurements, including routine visual tests and MRI scans, are not sensitive enough for this purpose. We present two visual tests addressing dynamic monocular and binocular functions which may closely associate with the extent of myelination along visual pathways. These include Object From Motion (OFM) extraction and Time-constrained stereo protocols. In the OFM

A High-Speed Target-Free Vision-Based Sensor for Bus Rapid Transit Viaduct Vibration Measurements Using CMT and ORB Algorithms.

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has become an increasing source of concern for public transportation of modern cities. Traditional contact sensing techniques during the process of health monitoring of BRT viaducts cannot overcome the deficiency that the normal free-flow of traffic would be blocked. Advances in computer vision technology provide a new line of thought for solving this problem. In this study, a high-speed target-free vision-based sensor is proposed to measure the vibration of structures without interrupting traffic. An improved keypoints matching algorithm based on consensus-based matchi

Visual Function Assessment in Geographic Atrophy: A Review.

Geographic atrophy (GA) causes significant vision impairment and reduction in vision-related quality of life. Fundus autofluorescence (FAF) is the gold standard of structural assessment of GA but is a surrogate marker for vision loss, which can be assessed by tests of visual function and functional vision. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), the most commonly used visual function test in ophthalmology, is a poor metric for assessing GA progression. This is because GA usually only affects the fovea in its late stage, grows slowly, and spared areas of retina may not 'fit' larger reading chart l
