Causes, Consequences and Public Health Implications of Low B-Vitamin Status in Ageing.

The potential protective roles of folate and the metabolically related B-vitamins (vitamins B12, B6 and riboflavin) in diseases of ageing are of increasing research interest. The most common cause of folate and riboflavin deficiencies in older people is low dietary intake, whereas low B12 status is primarily associated with food-bound malabsorption, while sub-optimal vitamin B6 status is attributed to increased requirements in ageing. Observational evidence links low status of folate and the related B-vitamins (and/or elevated concentrations of homocysteine) with a higher risk of degenerative

Vitamin B12-induced acneiform eruption.

Drug-induced acne is a specific subset of acne that usually has some specific features, namely monomorphic pattern, unusual location of the lesions beyond the seborrheic areas, uncommon age of onset, a resistance to conventional acne treatment. Several drugs have been associated with the development of eruptions that may simulate acne vulgaris. However, so far, there are a few cases of vitamin B12-induced acne. We report a case of acneiform eruption induced by vitamin B12 injection in a 37-year-old female patient.

Successful treatment of brain ischemia with supplementation therapy in a patient with hyperhomocysteinemia.

The effectiveness of homocysteine-lowering therapy on stroke prevention is still unclear. Although randomized controlled epidemiological trials have yielded mixed findings, a multicenter trial did not show any beneficial effect. Genetic studies are still lacking. Therefore, we report on a female patient with transient ischemic attacks and the thermolabile variant of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (TT genotype), who benefited from supplemental therapy for homocysteine lowering.

Vitamin B12 supplementation for anaemia, vitamin B12 status, and health outcomes in women of reproductive age.

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: To evaluate the benefits and harms of oral vitamin B12 supplementation on vitamin B12 status, anaemia, and health outcomes in women of reproductive age.

Vitamin B12 deficiency presenting as an acute confusional state: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with a wide spectrum of neuro-psychiatric manifestations. RESULTS: We report a case of a 44 year old female patient referred to the haematology unit with vitamin B12 deficiency presenting as an acute confusional state or delirium. Total resolution of the psychiatric symptoms occurred following parenteral vitamin B12 replacement therapy. CONCLUSION: This case report highlights one of the neuro-psychiatric presentations of vitamin B12 deficiency in a previously healthy individual.

[Neurological pathology associated with vitamin B group deficiency: thiamine, folate and cobalamin].

The "fragility" of the nervous system, especially concerning to its nutrition and metabolism, explains why vitamin deficits are an important cause of neurological pathology. Some deficiency diseases, which can be very severe and irreversible, are still present in our environment; diagnosis, which must be early so as not to delay treatment, can be difficult if we do not have them in mind. In this review we address the most relevant neurological diseases associated with thiamine, folate and cobalamin deficiency, and we focus especially combined subacute degeneration and Wernicke-Korsakoff syndro

The role of B vitamins in preventing and treating cognitive impairment and decline.

Many epidemiologic studies have considered whether markers of B-vitamin status are associated with cognitive function and cognitive decline. This avenue of research was sparked by the homocysteine (Hcy) theory of cardiovascular disease, which was extended to Alzheimer's disease when a link between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease was discovered. Hcy could cause cognitive impairment via direct neurotoxicity. However, decreased remethylation of Hcy to methionine might also compromise cognitive function by means other than mere Hcy lowering. Folate and vitamin B-12 participate in Hcy rem

Pernicious anemia: new insights from a gastroenterological point of view.

Pernicious anemia (PA) is a macrocytic anemia that is caused by vitamin B(12) deficiency, as a result of intrinsic factor deficiency. PA is associated with atrophic body gastritis (ABG), whose diagnosis is based on histological confirmation of gastric body atrophy. Serological markers that suggest oxyntic mucosa damage are increased fasting gastrin and decreased pepsinogen I. Without performing Schilling's test, intrinsic factor deficiency may not be proven, and intrinsic factor and parietal cell antibodies are useful surrogate markers of PA, with 73% sensitivity and 100% specificity. PA is ma

[Importance of water-soluble vitamins as regulatory factors of genetic expression].

Among nutrients, the role of water-soluble vitamins as genetic expression modulators has not been exhaustively stu-died. Relevant information is shown herein on the present state of the art in this field. For example, vitamin C deficiency leads to a decrease in mRNA levels of apolipoprotein A1 (Apo A1) in liver. Biotin participates in the regulation, both at mRNA and protein level, of the enzymes that participate in its own metabolic cycle and of enzymes that contribute to glucose metabolism. Thiamine regulates the expression of some genes that code for enzymes using thiamine diphosphate as co
