Vitiligo is an acquired skin disorder caused by the disappearance of pigment cells from the epidermis that gives rise to well defined white patches which are often symmetrically distributed. The lack of melanin pigment makes the lesional skin more sensitive to sunburn. Vitiligo can be cosmetically disfiguring and it is a stigmatizing condition, leading to serious psychologic problems in daily life. It occurs worldwide in about 0.5% of the population and it occurs as frequently in males as it does in females. The cause is unknown, but might involve genetic factors, autoimmunity, neurologic fact…

Clinically it is impossible to make difference between the vulvar melanosis the harmless brown spotty change of the vulva and melanoma malignum, that is one of the most dangerous malignancies. Even the dermatoscopical examination was not efficient to exclude the melanoma surely. A small, representative biopsy was enough for the diagnosis, which has exempted the patient from the unjustified mutilating resections. On the patient's skin they detected also a few relatively small disseminated hypopigmented spots. Electronmicroscopically they could observe plenty of melanosomes and big melanosoma-co

Estimation of peripheral T lymphocytes T3, T4, T8 and NK cells was carried out in 30 cases of different clinical types of vitiligo by direct immunofluorescence technique. The cases were divided into two broad groups (1) Localised; and (2) Generalised. These cases were again divided into 3 groups as per duration of disease. Thirty healthy subjects served as control. Decrease in T3 and T4 and increase in T8 with decrease of T4/T8 ratio was seen in both localised and generalised variety. But the T4/T8 ratio was decreased to a greater extent in generalised variety. The NK cells showed significant …

Patients with vitiligo have circulating antibodies directed in part to pigment cell antigens with MWs of approximately 90, 75, and 40-45 kDs. These antigens are denominated VIT 90, VIT 75, and VIT 40, respectively. To further characterize these "vitiligo" antigens, we examined their relation to antigens defined by a panel of 25 monoclonal antibodies (moab) to pigment cell antigens. We found by immunoprecipitation and SDS-PAGE analysis of 125I labelled, detergent soluble, human melanocyte macromolecules, that 24 (83%) of 29 patients with vitiligo had antibodies to one or more vitiligo antigens …

We report the results of a study on 100 patients (aged 12-68) with vitiligo, who were treated by transplantation of cultured autologous melanocytes to the depigmented areas, after removal of the epidermis at the recipient site by dermabrasion. The melanocytes were cultured from a 2 x 3 cm2 superficial shave biopsy taken from pigmented buttock skin. After 2-3 weeks in culture, 700-1000 cells per mm2 were applied on 60-500 cm2 dermabraded areas, and occluded for 1 week. The repigmented portion of the total treated area amounted to 95-100% in 40 patients, 65-94% in 32, 20-64% in 22, and 0-19% in …

A 36-year-old woman developed vitiligo in areas with active dermatitis herpetiformis. Both diseases have been associated with autoimmune disorders. However, in the present case the vitiligo is believed to be an isomorphic reaction to the dermatitis herpetiformis lesions.
