Effects of tegmental lesions on the isolation call of squirrel monkeys.

The present study is concerned with identifying brain mechanisms underlying a basic mammalian vocalization known as the isolation call. The call serves to reestablish contact of separated individuals. Adult squirrel monkeys were used as experimental subjects because the isolation call in these animals has been shown to be stable, well-defined, and readily elicited under experimental conditions. Bilateral, symmetrical electrocoagulations in certain parts of the tegmentum and core gray matter of the thalamus and midbrain variously altered the character and production of isolation calls, but had

Detection, communication, and individual identification with deep audio embeddings: A case study with North Atlantic right whales.

Anthropogenic noise has increased ambient sound levels across the globe, both underwater and on land. Among its many negative impacts, heightened noise can impair communication in vocal animals through acoustic masking. Conceptually, noise reduces the animal's communication space - the area in which an individual animal can effectively convey information to a conspecific listener. Previous studies have estimated the communication space using sound propagation models and/or behavioral studies. However, studies frequently equate signal recognition with signal detection - a necessary but not suff

Frequent vocalizations and deep brain stimulation-responsive hyperkinesia in a striatal disinhibition rat model for Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The lack of a rodent model for both motor and phonic tics hinders research on deep brain stimulation (DBS) for refractory Tourette syndrome (TS). Striatal disinhibition with a gamma-aminobutyric acid A antagonist (bicuculline) was previously shown to induce hyperkinesia and vocalizations in monkeys, indicating its potential as a TS model. In rats, however, only hyperkinesia was validated, prompting us to investigate whether they can also develop abnormal vocalizations and whether both conditions respond to thalamic DBS. METHODS: Rats underwent surgical implantation of a unilateral

Sex steroid hormones and sensorimotor vocal development in songbirds.

Vocal production learning is rare among animals with birdsong and human speech representing two of the clearest examples. There are two phases to this learning process: one involves the formation of a song memory or template, the second is a sensorimotor process requiring the imitation of the template by vocal output that in songbirds results in a stereotypic species-typical song. Recent advances in the understanding of neural processes required for sensorimotor learning, which includes error correction, have not considered the critical action of testosterone that is essential for song crystal

Minimally invasive device to effect vocal fold lateralization.

Despite many operative procedures focused on vocal fold lateralization, none has achieved an acceptable level of dependability. Bilateral vocal fold abductor paralysis is treated by arytenoidectomy, cordotomy, suture lateralization, or partial cordectomy. Tracheotomy remains the gold standard for maximizing the airway and preserving phonatory function. We have developed a device that is minimally invasive, tunable, and reversible, with the potential for lateralization or medialization of the vocal process. The device consists of a polyethylene collar, a Vitallium cam, and a double-helix core f

Comparative Histoanatomy of the Gorilla Vocal Fold.

OBJECTIVES: The layered structure of the human vocal fold is unique to humans and absent in animals. Previous studies suggested that the maculae flavae at the anterior and posterior ends of the human membranous vocal fold are involved in the formation of this layered structure and that they serve as a stem cell niche nurturing tissue stem cells. This study aimed to examine the comparative histoanatomy of the gorilla vocal fold. METHODS: Two larynges from Western gorillas (male) were examined using light (including immunohistochemistry) and electron microscopy. RESULTS: The gorilla's vocal fo

Investigating context-specific acoustic variation in the bleats of male domestic sheep.

Vocalizations provide an informative means of assessing the emotional states of animals, yet male vocal behaviour in domestic sheep remains unexplored. The study aimed to investigate whether rams' bleats vary across five distinct contexts associated with morning and night isolation, exposure to familiar ewe-bell sounds, feed anticipation, and feed denial. A total of 428 high-quality bleats were used to extract 20 acoustic parameters, which were then analyzed using a multivariate acoustic approach. Principal Component Analysis identified five independent acoustic components reflecting source-pa

Histologic comparison of vocal fold microflap healing with sutures and glue.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Improved voice quality is the expected outcome of microphonosurgery. To this end, the complex vibratory movement of the vocal folds must be preserved. Scarring of the vocal folds may compromise vocal outcome and is one of the most difficult to treat conditions. To minimize scar formation, a consensus exists on the need for maximum preservation of the epithelium and superficial lamina propria, and minimal exposure of vocal ligament. However, the need to cover the microflap defect is controversial. The aim of this study was to compare healing characteristics of microflap t

Intracordal injection increases glottic closing force in recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis.

Glottic closing pressure during swallowing was measured in the cat with a catheter pressure transducer to study the effectiveness of intracordal injection in increasing glottic pressure in unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis. Swallows were elicited by pouring water into the pharynx while the animal was under light anesthesia with ketamine. Peak pressure of the glottic closure for the control group during deglutition was 68.0 +/- 10.5 mm Hg (mean +/- standard deviation). Peak pressure decreased to 22.0 +/- 3.6 mm Hg just after sectioning of the unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve, a

Transcriptomic profiling reveals neurophysiological gene candidates underlying vocal evolution in African clawed frogs.

Neurophysiologists have discovered many mechanisms underlying the production of animal behaviors in specific species; these involve a collection of neuromuscular systems, neuronal membrane and neural network properties, as well as the hormones and neuromodulators known to modify them. However, the mechanistic basis of behavioral evolution is less well studied, and causal links between differences in gene expression, cellular mechanisms, and species-typical behaviors are rare. Vertebrate vocal behaviors are an excellent system for studying the evolution of behaviors because they are ancient, di

Misdirected regeneration of injured recurrent laryngeal nerve in the cat.

INTRODUCTION: Misdirected regeneration (MR) frequently occurs following injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) resulting in neurotmesis or axonotmesis. Physiological and anatomic parameters involved in the functional recovery of the larynx following freezing injury or neurorrhaphy of the RLN were studied. A multi-facilitated approach is undertaken to clarify the functional abnormalities caused by the MR after recurrent laryngeal nerve injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups of adult cats were studied. These included controls, cats with recurrent laryngeal neurorrhaphy, and cats wit

Histochemical study of posterior cricoarytenoid muscle reinnervation by a nerve-muscle pedicle in the cat.

Reinnervation of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle with a nerve-muscle pedicle (NMP) has been proposed for patients with bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis. Since its success has been controversial, a glycogen depletion histochemical technique was used to examine reinnervation. An ansa cervicalis NMP was implanted into the denervated PCA in nine cats. Eight months later, vocal cord activity was evaluated. The NMP nerve was stimulated extensively in seven cats (experimental group). Optical densities of NMP-supplied PCA muscle fibers from experimental and control groups were compare

Maternal immune activation alters bout structure of rat 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations.

Dysfunctional sequencing of behaviour and cognition is observed in schizophrenia across multiple domains, including during communication. We examined whether maternal immune activation (MIA), a risk factor for schizophrenia, disrupted the sequential organization of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) in a rat model. We analysed the structure of bursts of 50-kHz USVs (bouts) in two independent datasets (paired-rat: 19 control, 18 MIA; reward paradigm: 18 control, 20 MIA), using a Damerau-Levenshtein analysis with a k-fold cross-validation procedure. MIA animals showed greater variability in their b

Echolocating bats rely on audiovocal feedback to adapt sonar signal design.

Many species of bat emit acoustic signals and use information carried by echoes reflecting from nearby objects to navigate and forage. It is widely documented that echolocating bats adjust the features of sonar calls in response to echo feedback; however, it remains unknown whether audiovocal feedback contributes to sonar call design. Audiovocal feedback refers to the monitoring of one's own vocalizations during call production and has been intensively studied in nonecholocating animals. Audiovocal feedback not only is a necessary component of vocal learning but also guides the control of the

Characteristics of experimental recurrent laryngeal nerve surgical injury in dogs.

OBJECTIVES: We characterized various recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injuries in dogs. METHODS: Sixteen dogs were classified as having complete injuries (transection) or incomplete injuries (ligation, half-section, and crush). The characteristics of nerve injuries were evaluated by endoscopic examination, laryngeal electromyography (LEMG), and histopathologic examination at 0 to 12 months after the injury. RESULTS: After the RLN injury, the average muscle fiber diameter and the average muscle bundle diameter of the affected muscles were decreased, and the average number of muscular cell nucl

Rats selectively bred for low levels of play-induced 50 kHz vocalizations as a model for autism spectrum disorders: a role for NMDA receptors.

Early childhood autism is characterized by deficits in social approach and play behaviors, socio-emotional relatedness, and communication/speech abnormalities, as well as repetitive behaviors. These core neuropsychological features of autism can be modeled in laboratory rats, and the results may be useful for drug discovery and therapeutic development. We review data that show that rats selectively bred for low rates of play-related pro-social ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) can be used to model social deficit symptoms of autism. Low-line animals engage in less social contact time with conspec

The effects of melatonin on isolation distress in chickens.

Melatonin (0.1-1.0 mg/kg) reduced isolation-induced distress vocalizations (DVs) in young domestic chickens in a dose-dependent manner. This effect was unaffected by the administration of d-amphetamine (1.0 mg/kg) suggesting that melatonin's effects were not merely due to fatigue. The melatonin reduction in DVs was not naloxone reversible, indicating an action independent of the endogenous opioid system. However, chronic pretreatment with naltrexone facilitated the melatonin effect, suggesting a complex relationship between melatonin and the endogenous opioids in regulating distress vocalizati

Influence of stimulation of nasal afferents on expiration reflex evoked from vocal folds.

Cough and sneezing are upregulated during the upper airway diseases, most likely to enhance airway defense. The aim of this study was to assess the expiration reflex (ER), another expulsive defensive airway reflex, during allergic rhinitis (AR) and intranasal (i.n.) capsaicin challenge. Thirty male guinea pigs, sensitized to ovalbumin were used in the study. They were divided into 3 groups of 10 animals each: AR group (i.n. ovalbumin), capsaicin group (i.n. capsaicin 50 microM, 15 microl), and controls without any challenge. The animals were anesthetized with urethane (1.1 mg/kg) and allowed t

Transition to language: From agent perception to event representation.

Spoken language, as we have it, requires specific capacities-at its most basic advanced vocal control and complex social cognition. In humans, vocal control is the basis for speech, achieved through coordinated interactions of larynx activity and rapid changes in vocal tract configurations. Most likely, speech evolved in response to early humans perceiving reality in increasingly complex ways, to the effect that primate-like signaling became unsustainable as a sole communication device. However, in what ways did and do humans see the world in more complex ways compared to other species? Althou
