Cognitive behavioural therapy group work with voice hearers. Part 1.

This study presents a small, randomised control trial of cognitive behavioural interventions within a group setting for the treatment of auditory hallucinations. In a sample of 20 voice hearers, 10 were randomly allocated to an eight-session cognitive behavioural therapy group, and 10 underwent psychiatric 'treatment as usual'. Baseline assessments were undertaken. Measures of control, power, frequency and symptoms of distress and anxiety, were recorded on assessment and on completion of the group. The groups achieved a significant reduction in frequency of auditory hallucinations and in the b

Is vocal emotional processing fine-tuned to speaker gender, identity and phonetic content? - Evidence from simultaneous opposite adaptation.

The perception of vocal emotions requires efficient and flexible processing of auditory input. A hallmark of this flexibility is perceptual adaptation, which enables listeners to tune into the current auditory context (e.g., angry voices), thus sensitizing the system to sudden changes (e.g., a shift to fear). However, how vocal emotion adaptation is modulated by either stable speaker characteristics such as gender and identity, or dynamic cues such as phonetic content is insufficiently understood. This gap was addressed in three experiments using a paradigm inducing simultaneous opposite after

Proposal of a Focused Self-Attention LLM Allowing to Interpret Fragmentary Requests from Visually Impaired People.

The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been widely applied as an assistive technology for individuals with visual impairment (VI), providing various assistive technologies such as object recognition and obstacle detection. The accurate and powerful systems can be triggered through voice commands and thus significantly enhance the life experiences of users with VI. However, most assistive technologies simply accept a clear and exact command as input, ignoring the cognition and memory problems in blind people. If the users forget some parts of the full command (e.g., name of a targe

Bihippocampal damage with emotional dysfunction: impaired auditory recognition of fear.

A right-handed man developed a sudden transient, amnestic syndrome associated with bilateral hemorrhage of the hippocampi, probably due to Urbach-Wiethe disease. In the 3rd month, despite significant hippocampal structural damage on imaging, only a milder degree of retrograde and anterograde amnesia persisted on detailed neuropsychological examination. On systematic testing of recognition of facial and vocal expression of emotion, we found an impairment of the vocal perception of fear, but not that of other emotions, such as joy, sadness and anger. Such selective impairment of fear perception

Non-Invasive Voice-Based Early Detection of Parkinson's Disease via Spectral Feature Analysis and Machine Learning Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, slowly progressive, and irreversible neuropathological disorder characterized by the progressive degeneration of specific neurons responsible for producing neurotransmitters essential for motor control. Although PD primarily affects motor function, various non-motor symptoms commonly emerge during the prodromal phase. These include autonomic dysfunction, cognitive and neurobehavioral disorders, and sensory and sleep abnormalities. Notably, speech and voice alterations, particularly hypokinetic dysarthria, are frequent manifestations. This rese

Voice-interactive virtual simulated patients as a complement to standardized patient training in pharmacy education: A pilot evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Standardized patients (SPs) are widely used in pharmacy education for communication skills training, but high resource demands limit practice frequency. Voice-interactive virtual simulated patients (VSPs) powered by generative artificial intelligence may serve as a scalable complement, yet evidence supporting their use in pharmacy education remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, cross-sectional pilot evaluation of a voice-interactive VSP system among 62 fourth- and fifth-year pharmacy students who had previously completed traditional SP-based training. Students

An audiovisual dataset for emotion recognition (UTeMo) in Spanish language.

Emotion recognition has had remarkable growth in human-computer communication because emotions play an important role in the daily lives of human beings. This task is challenging because emotions are bodily reactions to external stimuli that differ greatly between people. Societies tend to normalize the response to these stimuli depending on their culture and era. In the literature, there are databases designed for the recognition of emotions in various languages, principally English. Although it is possible to find databases in Spanish within this compendium, none of them are specialized in t

Methodologies of speech analysis for neurodegenerative diseases evaluation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Neurodegenerative diseases are disorders that affect neurons in the brain resulting in a debilitating condition and progressive degeneration of nerve cells. These diseases involve different aspects among which speech impairment. Vocal signal analysis is used to evaluate this impairment and to discriminate normal from pathological voices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this paper, two methods of vocal signal analysis have been proposed to evaluate an anomalous condition in human speech, known as dysarthria, useful to compare pathological and healthy voices. Investigation of the Effects of Speech Signal Length on Vocal Disorder Sorting Done Via Dynamic Pattern Modeling.

OBJECTIVES: Development of a noninvasive method for separating different vocal fold diseases is an important issue concerning vocal analysis. Due to the time variations along a pathologic vocal signal, application of dynamic pattern modeling tools is expected to help in the detection of defects that occur in the speech production mechanism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, the hidden Markov model, which is a state space model, is employed to sort some of the vocal diseases. Moreover, this research mainly investigates the effects of the processed vocal signal lengths on the mention

Effects of mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss and signal amplification on vocal emotion recognition in middle-aged-older individuals.

Previous research has shown deficits in vocal emotion recognition in sub-populations of individuals with hearing loss. As emotion recognition is an essential ability that affects social interaction, and in extension, can impact well-being, understanding vocal emotion recognition difficulties is a high priority research topic. Furthermore, it has been shown that although hearing aids improves word recognition, it does not improve emotion recognition. To explore emotion recognition and the effect of amplification in individuals with hearing loss, we examined recognition of vocal emotions express

Peritonsillar abscess.

Peritonsillar abscess remains the most common deep infection of the head and neck. The condition occurs primarily in young adults, most often during November to December and April to May, coinciding with the highest incidence of streptococcal pharyngitis and exudative tonsillitis. A peritonsillar abscess is a polymicrobial infection, but Group A streptococcus is the predominate organism. Symptoms generally include fever, malaise, sore throat, dysphagia, and otalgia. Physical findings may include trismus and a muffled voice (also called "hot potato voice"). Drainage of the abscess, antibiotics,

Domain-specific impairment of source memory following a right posterior medial temporal lobe lesion.

This single case analysis of memory performance in a patient with an ischemic lesion affecting posterior but not anterior right medial temporal lobe (MTL) indicates that source memory can be disrupted in a domain-specific manner. The patient showed normal recognition memory for gray-scale photos of objects (visual condition) and spoken words (auditory condition). While memory for visual source (texture/color of the background against which pictures appeared) was within the normal range, auditory source memory (male/female speaker voice) was at chance level, a performance pattern significantly
