The suprascapular nerve originates from the upper trunk of the brachial plexus or less frequently from the root of C5. It runs a short way and crosses the suprascapular notch. It innervates the supraspinatus muscle and the acromioclavicular and glenohumeral joints. Then, it crosses the lateral edge of the spine of the scapula passing through the spinoglenoid notch, and innervates the infraspinatus muscle. These are potential sites of injury to the suprascapular nerve. Three cases of suprascapular nerve entrapment causing an isolated infraspinatus muscle atrophy in volleyball players were studi…

CONTEXT: Volleyball athletes frequently perform jump-landings, which can lead to structural changes in the patellar tendon. However, the relationship between intratendinous morphology, anthropometrics, and lower-limb range of motion (ROM) in athletes remains unclear, and the distal region of the patellar tendon is understudied.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between proximal and distal patellar tendon morphology with body anthropometrics and lower limb ROM in volleyball athletes.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 132 elite-level volleyball athletes.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Tendon thickn…

BACKGROUND: Shoulder rotational imbalances are common adaptations in volleyball players due to repetitive overhead movements. This study investigates the relationship between shoulder rotational asymmetries and the risk of shoulder pain in professional and semi-professional volleyball players.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 84 volleyball players, divided into groups with and without a history of shoulder pain (n = 29 and n = 55, respectively). Shoulder internal rotation and external rotation were measured using a goniometer. Glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD), ex…

We present a case of 10-year follow-up in a 27-year-old female collegiate volleyball athlete with continued infraspinatus atrophy confirmed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) despite compliance with physical therapy and rehabilitation following open suprascapular nerve (SSN) decompression. She successfully returned to sport post-operatively; however, at 10 year follow-up, had continued weakness and pain, without evidence of nerve injury on EMG. This is the first known report of 10-year follow-up in an athlete who underwent open SSN decompression without evidence of an associated spinoglenoid …

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare ankle joint range of motion (ROM) and muscle viscoelastic properties in female amateur volleyball players with a history of ankle sprain (AS group) and without (non-AS group).
METHODS: Forty-one female participants were included in the study: 25 in the AS group and 16 in the non-AS group. Ankle ROM was measured for inversion (IV), eversion (EV), plantar flexion (PF), and dorsiflexion (DF). Viscoelastic properties were assessed in the tibialis anterior (TA), medial gastrocnemius (MG), lateral gastrocnemius (LG), and peroneus longus (PL) muscles.

PURPOSE: The performance of swing movement during spikes and serves plays a crucial role in determining the outcomes of volleyball matches. This study aims to explore the effects of the participation of the trunk and lower limbs' involvement on the velocity and power of the swing movement of adolescent male volleyball players, as well as the differences in power and velocity performance of the swing movement among different ages and specific positions.
METHODS: The study involved 22 adolescent male volleyball players, with 11 high school students and 11 middle school students. The Kineo Globu…

Volleyball referees, as athletes and staff members, are exposed to different stress levels which can be determined by measuring pre- and post-match levels of salivary cortisol (C) and alpha-amylase (AA). This study aimed to determine the dynamics of stress biomarkers in referees during official volleyball matches and the connection to the roles or level of competition. The participants in this study were nine international volleyball referees (three females and six males) with a mean chronological age of 48.23 ± 2.31 years. In this study, saliva samples were collected during 24 official matche…

This study aimed to compare the effects of 8 weeks (24 sessions) between flywheel complex training with eccentric overload and traditional complex training of well-trained volleyball players on muscle adaptation, including hypertrophy, strength, and power variables. Fourteen athletes were recruited and randomly divided into the flywheel complex training with an eccentric-overload group (FCTEO, n = 7) and the control group (the traditional complex training group, TCT, n = 7). Participants performed half-squats using a flywheel device or Smith machine and drop jumps, with three sets of eight rep…

BACKGROUND: caffeine is an ergogenic aid that still needs to be investigated in women's sports performance.
METHODS: Eight semi-professional women's volleyball players (height = 1.63 ± 0.08 m; weight = 66.67 ± 4.74 kg) voluntarily participated in this study. A randomized crossover design was implemented where players underwent caffeine and placebo conditions. In the caffeine condition, participants consumed 5 mg/kg of caffeine based on their body weight before acute training. The evaluations were performed over two weeks of training. In both conditions, the countermovement jump, repeated jump…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Repeated impacts in high-contact sports such as American football can affect the brain's microstructure, which can be studied using diffusion MRI. Most imaging studies are cross-sectional, do not include low-contact players as controls, or lack advanced tract-specific microstructural metrics. We aimed to investigate longitudinal changes in high-contact collegiate athletes compared with low-contact controls using advanced diffusion MRI and automated fiber quantification.
METHODS: We examined brain microstructure in high-contact (football) and low-contact (volleyball)…

BACKGROUND: Several coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19)-associated complications are being increasingly reported, including arterial and venous thrombo-embolic events that may lead to amputation of the affected limbs. So far, acute upper limb ischaemia (ULI) has been reported only in critically ill patients.
CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we aimed to present a case of a 29-year-old, otherwise healthy male volleyball player, with acute ischaemic signs in the upper extremity who was diagnosed with COVID-19 1 month before the ischaemic event. It has been shown that volleyball players experience repetitive …

In many daily activities, and especially in sport, it is necessary to predict the effects of others' actions in order to initiate appropriate responses. Recently, researchers have suggested that the action-observation network (AON) including the cerebellum plays an essential role during such anticipation, particularly in sport expert performers. In the present study, we examined the influence of task-specific expertise on the AON by investigating differences between two expert groups trained in different sports while anticipating action effects. Altogether, 15 tennis and 16 volleyball experts …

Ankle stability is a key factor in preventing injuries and enhance performance in volleyball players. This study evaluated the effects of prancing and galloping drills on ankle stability, agility, and fitness parameters in volleyball players.
METHODS: Forty-two male volleyball players (mean age 23.67 ± 3.15 years) were randomly assigned to the prancing and galloping drills (POGO) training (PGT, n = 21) or conventional training (CT, n = 21) group. Over 6 weeks, the experimental g…

IntroductionInjury prevention and performance enhancement are paramount goals in sports. Myofascial Pain Syndrome, primarily caused by myofascial trigger points, can result in referred pain, stiffness, muscle shortening, and weakness. This study aimed to assess the impact of dry needling (DN) on latent myofascial trigger points on vertical jump performance in female volleyball players.MethodsA single-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted with twenty-six healthy female volleyball players who had no lower limb injuries in the last six months, exhibited latent trigger points i…

Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee) has a high prevalence in jumping athletes. Excessive load on the patellar tendon through high volumes of training and competition is an important risk factor. Structural changes in the tendon are related to a higher risk of developing patellar tendinopathy. The critical tendon load that affects tendon structure is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate patellar tendon structure on each day of a 5-day volleyball tournament in an adolescent population (16-18 years). The right patellar tendon of 41 players in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup w…
