BACKGROUND: Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare congenital malformation of the central nervous system (CNS), characterized by underdevelopment or dysplasia of the cerebellar vermis, expansion of the fourth ventricle and posterior fossa cistern. The incidence is aboutapproximately 1/25000-1/35000. At present, the etiology and pathogenesis of DWS are not completely clear. It is mostly considered to be a multifactorial genetic disease that is related to both genetic factors and environmental factors. There is no large sample size analysis of the chromosomal profile of DWS up to now. This study

BACKGROUND: Influenza in children is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Nervous system diseases are a factor relating to increased mortality rate. However, reports of how these underlying diseases contribute to the death of children with influenza are rare.
CASE SUMMARY: A 4-year-old-girl developed type A influenza-related encephalopathy (IAE) with seizures, acute disorder of consciousness, and intracranial hypertension (cerebrospinal fluid pressure: 250 mmH2O), and the Dandy-Walker variant was found by her first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) when admission. Three days lat

Pathogenic heterozygous variants in PIEZO2 typically cause distal arthrogryposis type 5 (DA5) and the closely related Gordon syndrome (GS). Only one case of PIEZO2-related Marden-Walker syndrome (MWS) has been reported to date. We report the phenotypic features of a Saudi female patient with features consistent with MWS in whom we identified a novel de novo likely pathogenic variant in PIEZO2. Our case lends support to the link between PIEZO2 and MWS.

The Dandy-Walker malformation is a congenital brain malformation, typically involving the fourth ventricle and the cerebellum. To date, the Dandy-Walker syndrome has not been described in association with bipolar disorder type I mania, and therefore we briefly report the case of a Dandy-Walker variant associated with acute mania. A 10-year-old boy was brought by his mother to the outpatient clinic of the Department of Psychiatry of a tertiary care hospital, with symptoms of mania. The MRI brain of the patient showed a posterior fossa cystic lesion, a giant cisterna magna communicating with the

The Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare posterior fossa malformation. The DWS can occur associated with other brain or systemic malformations, but ocular abnormalities in this disease are rare and clinical findings mimicking myasthenia gravis have not been described to date. We report a 23-year-old woman who presented mild limitation of the ocular movements with progressive palpebral ptosis, which changed in intensity during the day. The investigation showed negative anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody, repetitive nerve stimulation and "Tensilon test", but the brain magnetic resonance image

OBJECTIVE: Photodynamic therapy of Walker tumor after subcutaneous administration of 5-ALA solution using a multiple laser irradiation scheme was monitored by the fluorescence imaging technique to investigate the effectiveness of 5-ALA-PDT.
BACKGROUND DATA: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a localized cancer treatment based on the selective uptake and retention of photosensitizer at the tumoral level and on the activation of the photosensitizer by a specific wavelength of light, aiming to induce cytotoxic reactions. As a new photosensitizer, the heme precursor 5- aminolevulinic acid has been int

Fetal triploidy is a frequent reason for early abortion, and only few fetuses survive into the second trimester of pregnancy. Common sonographic markers for triploidy in the second trimester are severe asymmetric growth restriction (triploidy of maternal origin) and partial molar changes of the placenta (triploidy of paternal origin), together with structural fetal malformations. We report prenatal sonographic findings of thirteen triploid fetuses between 18 and 34 weeks' gestational age (eleven fetuses with 69, XXX, and two fetuses with 69, XXY). Intrauterine growth restriction (11/13 fetuses

The present report describes two fetuses, one female and one male, with thus far undescribed skeletal malformations. The mother was a gravida 2, para 0. Both pregnancies were terminated in the second trimester because of multiple congenital anomalies diagnosed ultrasonographically resembling a short rib-polydactyly syndrome. Both fetuses were found to have postaxial hexadactyly of the hands and feet, marked bilateral campomelia of the forearm and shank bones, and a Dandy-Walker cyst. In addition, the fourth ventricle was dilated in the first sibling and the second sibling had an inverse intest

Dandy-Walker syndrome in monozygotic twins is reported. The twins reported, presented with delayed development, big head and dysmorphic features. In addition, there were significant cafe-au-lait spots on the trunk and other minor features consistent with the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis. To the best of our knowledge, Dandy-Walker syndrome in combination with neurofibromatosis in monozygotic twins has not been previously reported.

A spontaneous cerebellar malformation was found in a 32-day-old male Fischer 344 rat. The cerebellar malformation was composed of a vermis defect and markedly dilated fourth ventricle. The cerebellar hemispheres were separated, with the left hemisphere being smaller than the right one. Degenerative/inflammatory lesions consisting of macrophage/lymphocyte infiltration, spheroidal calcium depositions, and astrocytic gliosis were seen adjacent to the cerebral aqueduct. Abnormally arranged hyperplastic ependymal cells were observed beneath the fourth ventricle in the medulla oblongata. The gross f

A recently designed Charcot Restraint Orthotic Walker (CROW) was used in the treatment of 18 patients with diabetic neuroarthropathy involving the foot and ankle. Eight of these patients had no surgery before the use of the CROW. In ten patients, the device was used for prolonged immobilization after surgery for complications of neuropathic joint disease. The CROW is a rigid, custom, full-foot enclosure ankle-foot orthosis. It was used after an initial period of cast immobilization. The CROW effectively controls limb edema, returns the patient to ambulatory activities, and prevents significant

The Walker-Warburg syndrome (WWS) is a fatal dysmorphic disorder of unknown etiology, but strongly suggests an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. It is characterized by severe congenital oculo-cerebral malformations (lissencephaly, congenital hydrocephalus, and ocular lesions). The authors report a case of WWS that occurred in a consanguineous union, with a review of the literature. Possible pathogenesis, and disorders sharing the features of WWS are discussed. Families-at-risk for WWS should be identified for prenatal diagnosis and for genetic counselling.

Walker-Warburg syndrome is a lethal, autosomal recessive disorder characterized by anomalies of the central nervous system and eye. Typical findings include hydrocephalus, agyria, retinal dysplasia, cerebellar dysgenesis, anterior chamber dysgenesis, and encephalocele. Recently, the phenotypic spectrum has been expanded to include congenital muscular dystrophy. Two sibs with Walker-Warburg syndrome are reported. One sib had congenital glaucoma and hydrocephalus. The other sib had hydrocephalus, microtia, absent auditory canals, and pale retinas, barely within the phenotypic spectrum of the dis

Neuropathologic examination of two siblings with phenotypic features consistent with Marden-Walker syndrome revealed central nervous system abnormalities which include reduction in the number of spinal anterior horn cells. The occurrence of these changes in a sibling pair provides strong evidence for a genetic etiology. The relationship between the neuropathologic changes and other phenotypic manifestations in this syndrome and in the closely related syndrome of Pena-Shokeir are discussed.

The paper describes a so far unreported combination of Dandy-Walker syndrome and chronic hereditary polyneuropathy in 2 boys. One of the boys has a de- and remyelinating motor and sensory polyneuropathy, with either an autosomal recessive mode of inheritence or a sporadic occurrence. The other has an autosomal dominant form of mild polyneuropathy with tomaculum formations in myelinated fibers, corresponding to hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies.

A review of serial computed tomography (CT) scans of 25 patients with the Dandy-Walker malformation revealed six patients with chronic downward transincisural herniation of the cerebrum after shunt decompression of the posterior fossa cyst or malfunction of a lateral ventricular drainage catheter, or both. Chronic cerebral herniation was detected postmortem in a seventh patient with the Dandy-Walker malformation. The CT findings and autopsy appearance of this previously undescribed feature of shunted Dandy-Walker malformation are illustrated.

The ultrastructure of the wall of the Dandy-Walker cyst has been described rarely. A boy aged 2 years was confirmed clinically, neuroradiologically, and operatively as having a Dandy-Walker cyst in the posterior fossa. The cyst wall obtained during surgery consisted of an outer arachnoid cell layer, intermediate interwoven neurological strands, and an inner layer of cells which lacked the characteristic appearance of ependyma. An unusual finding was a small, buried island of ependymal cells in the intermediate layer of the neuroglial tissue. Ultrastructural study of the cyst wall provides a be
