Bordetella pertussis in the National Capital Region: prevalent serotype and immunization status of patients.

Over a 2-year period 67 strains of Bordetella pertussis were identified in 231 single specimens of nasopharyngeal secretions submitted from patients suspected to have whooping cough in the National Capital Region; 89.5% of the identifications were made by culture. Serotype 1,3 was predominant. At least 75% of the patients with bacteriologically confirmed whooping cough had not been fully immunized. There was no evidence that adenoviruses or other viruses played any important etiologic role in the 204 cases of whooping cough or whooping cough syndrome studied virologically.

Neonatal malignant pertussis and exchange transfusion: A case report.

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a bacterial infection caused by Bordetella pertussis. It poses a significant risk, especially in neonates. This contagious respiratory infection is transmitted via the aerosol route from human reservoirs. The severe form can lead to mortality in approximately 70% of cases. The aim of our study is to report the severity of malignant whooping cough in neonates and the potential contribution of exchange transfusion to improving prognosis. In this case, a 26-day-old infant presented with malignant whooping cough, confirmed by PCR testing. Initial clinical findings inc

[Malignant pertussis in a three-week-old girl].

Whooping cough is an infectious disease caused by Bordetella pertussis. Particularly children under the age of six months can be severely affected by the infection. Severe leukocytosis may lead to thrombosis and pulmonary hypertension and eventually circulatory failure and death. This a case report of a three-week-old girl with malignant pertussis, who due to respiratory insufficiency was mechanically ventilated, and her severe leucocytosis was treated with exchange blood transfusion. Whooping cough may partially be prevented with efficient vaccination programmes.

[Present and future of oral pertussis vaccination].

Parenteral immunization against whooping cough shows some disadvantages which led to proposals to curtail pertussis vaccination in some countries. As a result a striking rise in pertussis morbidity in these regions was noted, so vaccination against whooping cough is still indicated. We developed an oral vaccine for the neonate to achieve a protective immunity at a time when it is especially needed and to avoid side-reactions. Oral vaccine was given to more than 15,000 newborns, vaccination results of the last 3 years are reported.

[Vaccine prevention in perinatal health care: parents, children and professionals].

Recent legislative texts have changed vaccinal policy and reinforced the role of midwives in vaccine prevention in perinatal healthcare. Quite as paediatricians and obstetricians-gynecologists, midwives can now prescribe and carry out, for the mothers, vaccines against rubella, tetanus, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, hepatitis B, influenza and whooping-cough and for the newborns vaccines against hepatitis B and tuberculosis. Concerning vaccinations, practitioners have to respect the vaccination calendar and a collaborative action is useful and necessary. These national guidelines are regularly upd

The O antigen enables Bordetella parapertussis to avoid Bordetella pertussis-induced immunity.

Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis are closely related endemic human pathogens which cause whooping cough, a disease that is reemerging in human populations. Despite how closely related these pathogens are, their coexistence and the limited efficacy of B. pertussis vaccines against B. parapertussis suggest a lack of cross-protective immunity between the two. We sought to address the ability of infection-induced immunity against one of these pathogens to protect against subsequent infection by the other using a mouse model of infection. Immunity induced by B. parapertussis infect

[Molecular typing of the strains of Bordetella pertussis circulating in St. Petersburg during an outbreak of the disease].

Growth of the whooping-cough morbidity during the last years in Russia and other countries with 40-year-long history of immunization gave rise to significant interest of researchers to variability of the Bordetella pertussis population. Comparative assay of the genomes of the B. pertussis strains circulating in St. Petersburg in 1998-2000 and strains used to produce domestic vaccines AKDS was performed using the pulse-field electrophoresis and sequencing. It was found that most strains of B. pertussis circulating during this period were distinguished from the vaccine strains by the DNA-profile

Shotgun proteomic analysis of Bordetella parapertussis provides insights into the physiological response to iron starvation and potential new virulence determinants absent in Bordetella pertussis.

Bordetella parapertussis is one of the pathogens that cause whooping cough. Even though its incidence has been rising in the last decades, this species remained poorly investigated. This study reports the first extensive proteome analysis of this bacterium. In an attempt to gain some insight into the infective phenotype, we evaluated the response of B. parapertussis to iron starvation, a critical stress the bacteria face during infection. Among other relevant findings, we observed that the adaptation to this condition involves significant changes in the abundance of two important virulence fac

Bordetella pertussis diagnosis in children under five years of age in the Regional Hospital of Cajamarca, Northern Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Bordetella pertussis is an important human pathogen that causes whooping cough (pertussis), an endemic illness responsible of significant morbidity and mortality, especially in infants and children. Worldwide, there are an estimated of 16 million cases of pertussis, resulting in about 195,000 child deaths per year. In Peru, pertussis is a major health problem that has been on the increase despite immunization efforts. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of B. pertussis among children under five years of age suspected to have whopping cough in Cajamarca, Pe

Pertussis deaths--United States, 2000.

Pertussis (i.e., whooping cough) is associated typically with an inspiratory "whoop," prolonged paroxysmal cough, and posttussive vomiting; however, persons infected with Bordetella pertussis sometimes experience atypical symptoms, making prompt recognition difficult and probably increasing infection transmission. All infants aged <6 months and any infants who have not yet received 3 doses of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccine are especially vulnerable to B. pertussis infection. This report summarizes the investigations of two pertussis deaths that occurred i

[What uses for the acellular pertussis vaccine?].

The acellular pertussis vaccine offers a better tolerance as compared with the whole cell pertussis vaccine. It has also a good protective effect against whooping cough. However given as a combined pentavalent vaccine for the primary immunization of infants, it appears to introduce an immune interference leading to a diminished response to the Haemophilus type b or poliomyelitis valence according to the type of vaccine. Thus it is recommended that immunization against whooping cough in France in the coming years uses whole cell pertussis combined vaccine for the primary immunization of infants

Looking beyond Pertussis in Prolonged Cough Illness of Young Children.

Pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough, is one of the most poorly controlled vaccine-preventable diseases in the world. South-East Asia is estimated to contribute the most to childhood disease burden while this remains largely unexplored in India. The clinical diagnosis of pertussis in young children is a challenge as the classical four-stage presentation with paroxysmal cough or whoop may be absent. It is also difficult to differentiate from other respiratory infections which can cause pertussis-like illness. Children below two years with prolonged cough illness attending an urban pediat

Protective Activity and Safety of Experimental Acellular Pertussis Vaccines Based on Antigenic Complexes Isolated from Biofilm and Planktonic Cultures of Bordetella pertussis.

Continued circulation of the whooping cough pathogen, even in countries with high vaccine coverage, can be related to persistence of Bordetella pertussis biofilms in the respiratory tract. The films differ from planktonic cells by increased resistance to the host immune system and antibacterial drugs. The available acellular pertussis vaccines (aPV) containing antigens isolated from planktonic cultures of B. pertussis protect from severe forms of whooping cough, but do not effectively influence circulation of virulent strains in the subclinical forms of the disease and asymptomatic carriage. [Immunologic findings in children with abnormal reactions after vaccination].

In a group of 89 children with abnormal reactions after administration of the mixed vaccine against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough, after the mixed vaccine against diphtheria and tetanus, the live measles vaccine and oral poliovaccine, a detailed analysis was made of the case-history, and basic parameters of cellular and humoral immunity were examined. In these children the intensity of post-vaccination reactions was beyond the range of accepted criteria of mild and medium reactions or complications. In 17.3% of the children with an abnormal reaction after the mixed vaccine against dip
