The current study was designed to determine if insulin, glucagon and somatostatin-containing cells are present in the pancreas of adult Xenopus laevis. Localization methods utilized included cytochemical aldehyde fuchsin (AF) staining as well as the immunochemical peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) procedure for light microscopy. BACKGROUND: FGF signaling plays numerous roles during organogenesis of the embryonic gut tube. Mouse explant studies suggest that different thresholds of FGF signaling from the cardiogenic mesoderm induce lung, liver, and pancreas lineages from the ventral foregut progenitor cells. The mechanisms that regulate FGF dose in vivo are unknown. Mammalian interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding proteins (IRBPs) are highly uveitogenic in Lewis rats. Xenopus laevis IRBP resembles mammalian IRBP in its four-fold structure, and has approximately 70% amino acid sequence identity with the bovine protein.
