Reappraising the role of dopamine in adolescent risk-taking behavior.

Adolescence is characterized by increased risk-taking, which is often ascribed to developmental changes in dopaminergic signaling. Popular m … r systems, which also change during adolescence, but that have been largely ignored in the field of adolescent development. A full understanding of adolescent behavior will require these neurochemicals and their interactions with dopamine to be taken into account.

Behavioral processes and risk for problem substance use in adolescents.

This narrative review examines associations of delay discounting, response inhibition, sensation-seeking, and urgency with adolescent problem substance use. Each of these processes is linked to adult substance use disorders, is associated with conditions linked to increased risk for adolescent problem substance use, and predicts problem substance use. Notably, all processes are linked to early life adversity (ELA) exposure and most appear to help explain links between ELA exposure and problem substance use. These findings are consistent with a growing body of literature indicating ELA interfer

Family Functioning and Relationship Quality for Adolescents in Family-based Treatment with Severe Anorexia Nervosa Compared with Non-clinical Adolescents.

This longitudinal study explored family functioning and relationship quality for adolescents with severe anorexia nervosa (AN). An important outcome given healthy family functioning supports effective adolescent development. Fifty-four female adolescents and their parents, treated with family-based treatment after inpatient admission, and 49 non-clinical age-matched adolescents and their parents were compared at assessment and 6 months after session 20. At baseline, AN group mothers and fathers reported poorer family function. AN adolescents were notably similar to controls, reporting poorer f…

Consultation with the specialist: thyroid nodules.

Based on strong research evidence, thyroid nodules in children and teenagers are more likely to be malignant than in adults. Based on strong research evidence, a history of ionizing radiation to the head or neck is an independent risk factor for the development of thyroid malignancies. There is strong research evidence, including a recent meta-analysis, supporting the use of fine-needle aspiration biopsy in the evaluation of all pediatric and adolescent patients presenting with a thyroid nodule. The surgical management and postoperative care of pediatric and adolescent patients who have well-d

Role of family factors in adolescent delinquency in an Elazig/Turkey reformatory.

Family is one of the most important factors in the social and psychological progress of an adolescent. Social behavior disorders in childhood have been reported to be caused by many factors that may lead children to commit a crime. Our study included a total of 106 convicted adolescents from Eastern Turkey in a reformatory and 126 unconvicted adolescents with a similar socio-economic status. A survey form was completed during a face-to-face interview and a review of official records was undertaken. The role of family disruption, education levels of parents, the rate of imprisonment among first

The adolescent patient.

The physician must establish a confidential and trusting relationship with the adolescent patient. All states allow treatment of adolescents over 18 without parental consent and some allow treatment for special problems such as venereal disease or drug abuse before 18. The depressed adolescent often presents with behavioral problems, school failure, or medical symptoms. The medical history should include a description of the pregnancy and delivery, immunizations and childhood diseases, family history of coronary disease, sexual activity, school performance, and drug use. [Preliminary experience with the SCID-5-AMPD clinical interview in clinical and non-clinical adolescent samples].

OBJECTIVE: With the increasing prominence of the alternative, dimensional model of personality disorders, developmental aspects have also gained importance in the diagnosis of personality disorders. Researchers and practicing clinicians are paying growing attention to adolescents showing signs of disharmonious personality development. Although the study of personality pathology in adolescence remains a debated area both domestically and internationally, timely and appropriate diagnostics can form the basis for adequate therapy. Negative emotion differentiation buffers against intergenerational risk for social anxiety in at-risk adolescent girls.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) tends to emerge during adolescence and is more prevalent among those assigned female at birth. Parental social anxiety confers risk for adolescent SAD but less is known regarding protective factors. Research suggests that emotion differentiation (the ability to discriminate between similarly valenced emotions, e.g., fear vs. sadness vs. anger) may be protective, as it is associated with adaptive psychosocial outcomes. However, little work has examined how emotion differentiation influences the development of SAD, particularly during periods of higher risk such as

Early life exposure to high fructose diet induces metabolic dysregulation associated with sex-specific cognitive impairment in adolescent rats.

The incidence of adolescent mental health disorders is on the rise. Epidemiological studies suggest that poor nutrition is a significant contributor to this public health crisis, specifically through exposure to high level of dietary sugar, including fructose, during critical periods of development. Previous studies have shown that elevated fructose exposure during adolescence disrupts mental health. Despite these data, it is currently unknown how fructose exposure, specifically during infancy, may impact adolescent mental health. We developed a rat experimental protocol to investigate the eff

Intimate Partner Violence Exposure and Adolescent Mental Health Outcomes: The Mediating Role of Housing Insecurity.

The present study investigated pathways from childhood exposure to mothers' intimate partner violence (IPV) to adolescent depression and anxiety. Further, the study examined whether housing insecurity mediated the link from IPV exposure to mental health outcomes. Data came from the Years 5, 9 and 15 interviews of the Fragile Families and Child Well-being Study; the analytic sample was limited to mothers with at least partial custody of children (N = 2,425). Structural equation modeling with latent variables investigated research questions. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) identified observed

Developmental pathways of adolescent cannabis use: Risk factors, outcomes and sex-specific differences.

BACKGROUND: Characterizing patterns of adolescent cannabis use (CU), as well as risk factors and outcomes uniquely associated with these pathways is essential for informing treatment and prevention efforts. Yet, few studies have examined these issues among youth at-risk of engaging in problematic cannabis use. Further, research accounting for use of other substances or sex differences in patterns of CU remains exceedingly sparse. METHODS: Trajectory-based modeling was used to identify underlying CU pathways among a predominantly Hispanic (90%) sample of at-risk youth (n = 401; 46% female) acr

A biopsychosocial model of body image concerns and disordered eating in early adolescent girls.

Body image and eating concerns are prevalent among early adolescent girls, and associated with biological, psychological and sociocultural risk factors. To date, explorations of biopsychosocial models of body image concerns and disordered eating in early adolescent girls are lacking. A sample of 488 early adolescent girls, mean age = 12.35 years (SD = 0.53), completed a questionnaire assessing depressive symptoms, self-esteem, body mass index (BMI), sociocultural appearance pressures, thin-ideal internalization, appearance comparison, body image concerns and disordered eating. Depressive symptoms and subclinical markers of cardiovascular disease in adolescents.

PURPOSE: To examine the association between depressive symptoms and subclinical markers of cardiovascular disease (CVD), specifically arterial stiffness, as indexed by pulse wave velocity (PWV), and carotid artery intima media thickening (IMT), in a sample of healthy adolescents, and to explore adolescent hostility as a potential moderator of depression on subclinical markers of CVD. METHODS: One hundred fifty-seven (n = 157) black and white adolescents between the ages of 16-21 completed a follow-up study of psychosocial stress and cardiovascular risk factors that included measures of PWV an

Association of childhood and adolescent anthropometric factors, physical activity, and diet with adult mammographic breast density.

Early-life exposures may influence the development of breast cancer. The authors examined the association of childhood and adolescent anthropometric factors, physical activity levels, and diet with adult mammographic breast density, a strong risk factor for breast cancer. Women in the Minnesota Breast Cancer Family Study cohort who had undergone mammograms but had not had breast cancer (n=1,893) formed the sample. Information on adolescent exposures, including relative height, weight, and physical activity at ages 7, 12, and 18 years and diet at age 12-13 years, was self-reported during two fo

A brief primer for pediatric urologists and surgeons on developmental psychopathology in the exstrophy-epispadias complex.

Developmental psychopathology is common in children with exstrophy. It may be mild or severe, and it may persist or transform as the child grows. The pediatric urologist is ideally situated to identify signs or symptoms of early developmental psychopathology in these children. Presented in this article are techniques for identifying the child requiring full assessment and for establishing referral-consultants. Screening instruments are suggested, as well as how to use these to educate the parents and the child. Methods are provided to identify, as well as to educate, selected consultants in ch

Parenting in Moments: An Ecological Momentary Assessment of Parenting and Adolescent Substance Use and Externalizing Behaviors.

A large body of traditional survey and lab-based research has found that parenting behaviors are associated with risk for substance use (SU) and externalizing symptoms in adolescents. It is presumed that parenting effects on adolescent SU and symptoms unfold within families over moments in everyday life. However, this has rarely been tested. The present ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study tested within-person momentary associations among parenting, adolescent emotional and reward arousal, and SU and externalizing symptoms. Eighty-four 14-18 year olds completed five surveys per day for

Adolescent nicotine treatment causes robust locomotor sensitization during adolescence but impedes the spontaneous acquisition of nicotine intake in adult female Wistar rats.

Very few people are able to quit smoking, and therefore it is essential to know which factors contribute to the development of compulsive nicotine use. These studies aimed to investigate if early-adolescent nicotine exposure causes locomotor sensitization and affects anxiety-like behavior and the spontaneous acquisition of intravenous nicotine self-administration. Early-adolescent male and female rats were treated with nicotine from postnatal (P) days 24 to 42, and anxiety-like behavior and locomotor activity were investigated one day after the cessation of nicotine treatment and in adulthood
