Ablations of areas 3b (SI proper) and 3a of somatosensory cortex in marmosets deactivate the second and parietal ventral somatosensory areas.

Partial ablations of specific parts of cortical areas 3b (SI proper) and 3a in marmosets were found to render somatotopically equivalent parts of two other cortical somatosensory fields, the second somatosensory area (SII) and the parietal ventral area (PV), unresponsive to peripheral stimulation. Microelectrode recordings in anesthetized marmosets first established the responsiveness and locations of the representations of body parts, including the hand in areas 3a and 3b, SII, and in some cases PV. The hand representations in areas 3a and 3b were then removed by aspiration. Immediately after

Control of airway caliber.

Tracheobronchial smooth muscle tone may be affected by 4 nervous mechanisms: (1) Vagal cholinergic parasympathetic nerves, which are the main agents for resting tone and most reflex bronchoconstrictions. Their activity is blocked by atropinic drugs. (2) Sympathetic adrenergic dilator nerves, which may act mainly on beta-adrenoceptors in the pulmonary bronchi; alternatively, they may inhibit ganglionic transmission in the vagal constrictor pathway. (3) Vagal nonadrenergic dilator nerves (NAIS). The neurotransmitter at these nerves is probably vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), although pu

Electrophysiological characteristics of lumbar spinal cord neurons backfired from lateral reticular nucleus in the rat.

Spinal neurons antidromically activated from either the lateral reticular nucleus (LRN) or immediately adjacent areas were identified in the rat lumbar spinal cord. In agreement with previous anatomical work (60), these neurons were widely distributed in both the dorsal and ventral horns of the spinal cord and could be subdivided into three main groups according to their location: a) deep ventromedial (DVM) cells, which project more substantially to the LRN than to other supraspinal targets; b) cells of the median portion of the neck of the dorsal horn (mNDH), which project exclusively to the

Upper thoracic sympathetic neuron responses to input from urinary bladder afferents.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the organization of neural circuitry responsible for the intersegmental transmission of input from urinary bladder afferents to sympathetic preganglionic neurons (SPNs). The electrical activity of SPNs was recorded from axons of the cervical sympathetic trunk in anesthetized central nervous system (CNS)-intact and in unanesthetized midcollicular-decerebrate or acute C1 spinal cats. In all three preparations, tonically active SPNs were excited or inhibited by 1) electrical stimulation of myelinated afferents of the pelvic or hypogastric nerve, both o

Auditory neuronal sizes after a unilateral conductive hearing loss.

The left external auditory meatus was removed in 4-day-old CBA/J mice; after killing at 45 days, serial sections of the cochleae and brain stem were prepared. From these, the cross-sectional areas of spiral ganglion neurons and of 14 auditory brain stem neuronal types were measured, using a total of 210 neurons of each of the 15 types from both the right and left sides. Nine neuronal types were significantly smaller (P less than 0.01) on the left side: spiral ganglion neurons; globular, small spherical, large spherical, octopus, multipolar, and granule cells of the ventral cochlear nucleus; Pu

Adaptive response of carotid body chemoreceptors to CO2.

Carotid body chemoreceptor responses to sudden changes in pETCO2 (end-tidal tracheal CO2 partial pressure) and paCO2 (arterial CO2 partial pressure) from one stable state to another at a constant level of PETO2 (end-tidal tracheal O2 partial pressure) and paO2 (arterial O2 partial pressure) were studied in 18 anesthetized cats. Chemoreceptor activity was recorded from single or pauci-fiber filaments of a cut sinus nerve. During a hypercapnic stimulus by CO2 inhalation the discharge rate rapidly increased to a peak and then adapted to a lower level in 20-30 s showing an overshoot in the respons

Effect of trigeminal tractotomy on behavioral response to dental pulp stimulation in the monkey.

Trigeminal tractotomy near the level of the obex was carried out in 10 macaque monkeys. Behavioral responses were evaluated by a quantitative paradigm measuring lever-press responses to electrical stimulation of the dental pulp or facial skin, and by assessing facial response to cutaneous pin-scratch before and after the tractotomy. Two pharmacological agents, strychnine and L-dopa, were administered and their effect on behavioral responses to these stimuli was studied. Tractotomy did not produce dental analgesia. Thresholds for escape from cutaneous electrical stimulation of facial skin, howe

The basal ganglia-circa 1982. A review and commentary.

Our review has shown that recent studies with the new anterograde and retrograde axon transport methods have confirmed and extended our knowledge of the projection of the basal ganglia and clarified their sites of origin. They have thrown new light on certain topographic connectional relationships and revealed several new reciprocal connections between constituent nuclei of the basal ganglia. Similarly, attention has been drawn to the fact that there have also been many new histochemical techniques introduced in recent years that are now providing regional biochemical overlays for connectional

Topographical organization of ascending cerebellar projections from the dentate and interposed nuclei in Macaca mulatta: an anterograde degeneration study.

Discrete electrolytic lesions were placed in the dentate and interpositus cerebellar nuclei in th monkey Macaca mulatta and anterograde degeneration was traced in the ascending limb of the brachium conjunctivum using the Wiitanen technique. The dentate and interpositus anterior (IA) nuclei project topographically onto the two somatotopically organized divisions of the red nucleus and the ventrolateral-ventral intermediate nuclei of the thalamus (VL-Vim). Caudal parts of the dentate project to face areas in medial parts of the parvocellular red nucleus (RNpc) and VL-Vim, rostrolateral parts to

Rotigotine effect in prolonged disturbance of consciousness. Brief report of two cases.

Two patients with post-coma reactivation deficiency who showed a "dramatic" response to rotigotine therapy are described. They had suffered from prolonged coma due to lesions in the mesencephalic ventral tegmental area. The authors believe that rotigotine effect in these cases could be due to restoration of dopaminergic transmission in medial frontal areas previously "de-afferented" from the lesions. Some comatous patients may experience a prolonged difficulty in recovering a normal state of consciousness. This phenomenon may be due to dysfunction of amynergic activating pathways connecting br

Amygdala Corticofugal Input Shapes Mitral Cell Responses in the Accessory Olfactory Bulb.

Interconnections between the olfactory bulb and the amygdala are a major pathway for triggering strong behavioral responses to a variety of odorants. However, while this broad mapping has been established, the patterns of amygdala feedback connectivity and the influence on olfactory circuitry remain unknown. Here, using a combination of neuronal tracing approaches, we dissect the connectivity of a cortical amygdala [posteromedial cortical nucleus (PmCo)] feedback circuit innervating the mouse accessory olfactory bulb. Optogenetic activation of PmCo feedback mainly results in feedforward mitral

The role of T-cadherin in axonal pathway formation in neocortical circuits.

Cortical efferent and afferent fibers are arranged in a stereotyped pattern in the intermediate zone (IZ). Here, we studied the mechanism of axonal pathway formation by identifying a molecule that is expressed in a subset of cortical axons in the rat. We found that T-cadherin (T-cad), a member of the cadherin family, is expressed in deep-layer cell axons projecting to subcortical structures, but not in upper layer callosal axons projecting to the contralateral cortex. Ectopic expression of T-cad in upper layer cells induced axons to project toward subcortical structures via the upper part of t

Visual localization in dyslexia.

Individuals with specific reading disability (SRD) may exhibit visual psychophysical abnormalities that include prolonged visual persistence, decreased luminance contrast sensitivity, lower flicker fusion thresholds, abnormal metacontrast masking, and lower motion detection sensitivity. These abnormalities could result from impairment of the magnocellular division of the visual afferent pathway to the cortex. The authors predicted that an impairment of this pathway would also cause abnormalities in ability to localize visual stimuli. This prediction was tested in 2 experiments. Results of both

Lipopolysaccharide signaling in the carotid chemoreceptor pathway of rats with sepsis syndrome.

In addition to their role in cardiorespiratory regulation, carotid body (CB) chemoreceptors serve as sensors for inflammatory status and as a protective factor during sepsis. However, lipopolysaccharide-induced sepsis (LPS) reduces CB responsiveness to excitatory or depressant stimuli. We tested whether LPS exerts a direct effect on the carotid chemoreceptor pathway, the CB and its sensory ganglion. We determined that the rat CB and nodose-petrosal-jugular ganglion complex (NPJgc) express TLR4, TNF-α and its receptors (TNF-R1 and TNF-R2). LPS administration (15mg/kg intraperitoneally) evoked M

Common Features Between Stroke Following Varicella in Children and Stroke Following Herpes Zoster in Adults : Varicella-Zoster Virus in Trigeminal Ganglion.

The cerebral arteries are innervated by afferent fibers from the trigeminal ganglia. Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) frequently resides in the trigeminal ganglion. Reports of arterial ischemic stroke due to VZV cerebral vasculopathy in adults after herpes zoster have been described for decades. Reports of arterial ischemic stroke due to post-varicella cerebral arteriopathy in children have also been described for decades. One rationale for this review has been post-licensure studies that have shown an apparent protective effect from stroke in both adults who have received live zoster vaccine and

Cooperative hand movements: effect of a reduced afference on the neural coupling mechanism.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of unilateral reduction of afferent input on the 'neural coupling' mechanism during cooperative hand movements. This 'neural coupling' is reflected in the task-specific appearance of contralateral reflex responses in forearm muscles to unilateral arm nerve stimulation. Sensory input from the right hand was reduced by ischemic nerve block at the right wrist. Ipsilateral and contralateral reflex responses elicited by stimulation of the ulnar nerve either at the left or the right wrist proximal to the nerve block were recorded in forearm extenso

The Vagus Nerve at the Interface of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis.

The microbiota, the gut, and the brain communicate through the microbiota-gut-brain axis in a bidirectional way that involves the autonomic nervous system. The vagus nerve (VN), the principal component of the parasympathetic nervous system, is a mixed nerve composed of 80% afferent and 20% efferent fibers. The VN, because of its role in interoceptive awareness, is able to sense the microbiota metabolites through its afferents, to transfer this gut information to the central nervous system where it is integrated in the central autonomic network, and then to generate an adapted or inappropriate

Vagal afferent mediates the anorectic effect of peripheral secretin.

Secretin (SCT) is a classical peptide hormone that is synthesized and released from the gastrointestinal tract after a meal. We have previously shown that it acts both as a central and peripheral anorectic peptide, and that its central effect is mediated via melanocortin system. As peripheral satiety signals from the gastrointestinal tract can be sent to the brain via the vagal afferent or by crossing the blood-brain barrier (BBB), we therefore sought to investigate the pathway by which peripheral SCT reduces appetite in this study. It is found that bilateral subdiaphragmatic vagotomy and trea

Optical coherence tomography technologies: which machine do you want to own?

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has evolved over the past decade to become one of the most important ancillary tests in ophthalmic practice. This noninvasive ocular imaging technique provides high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), macular region, ganglion cell layer, and optic nerve head. With OCT, we can learn much about axonal-neuronal integrity in the anterior aspect of the afferent visual pathway and gain insights about mechanisms of brain injury in various central nervous system disorders.
